Text: Galatians 3:21
Title: Why should Christians celebrate Jewish feasts? (Continued)
One may ask, "If these feasts were given to the Jews, why should Christians celebrate them?" God wants Christians to celebrate them because He aligned Christian historical events with the Jewish feasts. This tells us that Christians are also God chosen, Holy and special people (Deuteronomy 7: 6 "For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself , a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth) and through Jesus Christ our Lord we have become Abraham (Father of the Jews) seed. (Galatians 3: 29 and if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.). God calls these feasts “His feast" (Leviticus 23:2) and should be celebrated by all generations. (Exodus 12: 14 'So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.) So Jesus Christ and the disciples celebrated it.
Passover, for Jews, commemorates God sparing the Jews from the plague by having them kill a sheep and put its blood on their door posts. It is also a reminder of their deliverance from slavery. For Christians, Jesus Christ is our Passover lamb, sacrificed for us on the Cross (1 Corinthians 5:7), for deliverance from all our sins.
The feast of First fruits, where Jews offer their harvest's first fruits to God, coincides with Jesus Christ's resurrection. Paul wrote (1 Corinthians 15:20), "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first fruit of those who have fallen asleep."
Pentecost, when God gave the Ten Commandments to the Jews to guide them, marks the day the Holy Spirit descended upon Christians to also guide them. (Act 2)
Three feasts remain unfulfilled for Christians but are predicted in the New Testament as end-time prophecies:
1. The Feast of Trumpet: Paul said (1 Thessalonians 4: 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.) and 1 Corinthians 15:52), signaling the rapture.
2. The Day of Atonement: Is the highest holy day of the Jewish calendar. In the Old Testament, the Jews, through the high priest make a sacrifice for the sins of the people on the Day of Atonement. This is the act of paying for penalty for sins and bringing reconciliation (a restored relationship) between the people and God. Jesus Christ's blood cleanses believers. (2 Corinthians 5: 21 and 1 Corinthians 15:3). So after the Trumpet or Rapture we will reconcile with God. So it is a day for redemption, purification and reconciliation to meet God
3. The Tabernacle (or Tents/Booths): representing rest in the place of liberty to come (Revelation 21: - 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.") Jesus promised eternal life during the Feast of Tabernacle (John 7:37-39).
The Feasts is all about acknowledging the goodness of God in your life by giving or showing Love to the needy. (Deuteronomy 16: 14 And you shall rejoice in your feast , you and your son and your daughter , your male servant and your female servant and the Levite , the stranger and the fatherless and the widow , who are within your gates). Emphasizes rejoicing and inclusivity during these feasts.
As Christians, let us fast, pray, and give during the Feast of Tabernacle (October 16-23) to demonstrate God's nature in us. (James 1: 27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.)
May we receive the Feast of Tabernacle's blessings in Jesus Christ's mighty name. Amen.
