THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU

Scripture Reading: 1 John 2

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

As Christians, the anointing we receive guides us into the truth. The anointing refers to the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. This does not deny the importance of the ministry of teachers in the body of Christ.

The Holy Spirit guides us to study and understand the scriptures. In addition to that the Lord has also given ministry gifts to the church – such as pastors and teachers - to instruct, encourage and edify God’s people. To live for the Lord, we must abide in the anointing of the Holy Spirit and allow His anointing to abide in us.

• The anointing abides in us. Every believer has the Holy Spirit living inside them. The Holy Spirit does not visit the believer – He lives in the believer. That is one of the most fundamental truths of the New Testament. It separates the life of believers in the New Testament from those of the old. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit empowered special people to do special works by coming ‘upon’ them. After the mission was accomplished, the Holy Spirit would usually leave the people. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit ‘lives within’ all believers at all times. He abides in us.

• Abide in the anointing. In response to the Holy Spirit’s abiding in us, we must also abide in Him. That means we must live our lives through Him. We abide in the Holy Spirit by being aware of His presence in us and depending on His help and counsel in all that we do.

Abiding in the anointing means we commune and live in a consciousness of the Holy Spirit’s presence. We must never lose sight of the reality of God’s presence within us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the presence of the Holy Spirit. I live my life through Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

*WHO SINNED?*

*Scripture Reading:* John 9

_Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” *John 9:1-2*_

Jesus used His encounter with this blind man to later teach about spiritual blindness and the need for God to open our eyes to the truth. The Lord took a man’s physical blindness and demonstrated the stages of spiritual insight and sight. There are some important points to note from the passage.

*• Jesus passed by.* The impression you get is that Jesus was going His own way. The words used in the passage give the impression Jesus did not seem to be going anywhere purposefully. However, we know that our Lord did not do anything without intent.

*• Jesus saw him.* Jesus ‘saw’ him, which indicated interest, care, concern and compassion. The disciples apparently felt the same interest and concern for the man, but they got caught on trying to figure out the spiritual cause of the man’s condition.

Interestingly the man did not ask for help from Jesus. Rather, the Lord took the initiative to help him. We must always be assured that the Lord sees us wherever we are. He will not pass us by.

*• His disciples asked, ‘who sinned’?* The disciples were attracted to the man and wondered about him. Was he suffering because of some great sin committed by his parents or because God had foreseen that the man would be a great sinner before he was born? This is similar to how Job’s friends felt about him. They assumed that Job’s troubles were the result of a sin he had committed.

Many times when we go through difficulties, we wonder whether God is punishing us for something we’ve done wrong or whether there is something wrong with our ancestry. Others may look at what we are going through and simply conclude that our suffering is a retribution for our sins.

Whatever the case maybe, it is assuring that Jesus did not pass this man by but stopped and took notice of him.

_*Prayer:* Heavenly Father, I know you take notice of me. Thank you that you do not pass me by. In Jesus’ name, Amen._

*WHAT PATH ARE YOU ON?*

*Scripture Reading:* Proverbs 14

_There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. *Proverbs 14:12*_

The paths we take in life determine the destinations we arrive at. If we choose the right way, we will arrive at the right destination; if we choose the wrong way we will arrive at the wrong destination.

The question all of us must ponder over is whether the path we are on is the right one or the wrong one.

*• The wrong way is easy.* The wrong way is usually accessible. It does not offer us resistance. One of the reasons why the wrong way is easy is because a lot of people are doing it. Because we are social beings, we feel safe in the company of others. As a result, when we see a lot of people moving on a certain path, we find the confidence to move along with them.

The reality is that the majority are usually wrong. That is what we see frequently in the Bible. God’s way is not the popular way.

*• The wrong way is pleasurable.* People ask, ‘how can something that feels so good, be wrong?’ We have elevated our feelings above our conscience. Many are following a way that seems right to them because of the good feelings it gives them. From the beginning, sin has always been presented as pleasurable.

*• The wrong way is short-term.* Instant gratification drives all sinful behaviour. When we are making choices, we usually consider the immediate benefits we can get from them. We do not ponder the eternal consequences of our actions. Many in our world have successfully blocked eternity – heaven and hell – from their considerations. We have turned them into ancient myths.

Have you considered the path you’re on? Does it seem right to you? Think of the end of that way.

_*Prayer:* Heavenly Father, deliver me from self-deception. Help me to see life from an eternal point of view. In Jesus’ name, Amen”_
