INTRODUCTION
Brothers and sisters, today is Pentecost Sunday—the day we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. It is also Evangelism Sunday in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. What a divine combination! The same Spirit that filled the disciples on the day of Pentecost is the Spirit that empowers us to go and make disciples of all nations.
However, note that evangelism without discipleship is like birth without growth. It is not enough to bring people to Christ; we must build them up on the foundation already laid. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11, “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ is the foundation. The question is: what are we building on that foundation? And how are we building others? Today, the Lord is calling us to move from mere conversion to intentional discipleship. To build on the foundation already laid.
LET US PRAY!
#1. The Great Commission is a Discipleship Mandate
In the first reading (Matt. 28:19–20), Jesus gives what we call the Great Commission. He says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
Please observe: He did not say, “Go and make converts only.” He said, “Make disciples.” A convert is someone who says yes to Jesus once. A disciple is someone who learns from Jesus, obeys Jesus, and becomes like Jesus every day. Discipleship is the process of building a person on the foundation of Christ so that they can stand firm, grow, and also build others.
On this Evangelism Sunday, let us not celebrate how many hands were raised at the expense of how many lives were built. Evangelism wins souls; discipleship secures them. Both are the work of the Spirit.
#2. Discipleship is not a programme; it is a process
In the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20), Jesus did not say, “Go and get decisions.” But rather, “Go and make disciples.”
There is a difference between a convert and a disciple. A convert makes a decision. A disciple makes a surrender.
Many churches in Ghana are full of converts but empty of disciples. We have people who raised their hands, said a prayer, got baptized, but still love the world, live in secret sin, and have no appetite for God’s Word.
Discipleship is the slow, deliberate, Spirit-led process of helping a person become like Christ in character, conduct, and conviction. It is not a one-week crusade or a quarterly seminar. It is life-on-life investment. That is why Paul told Timothy in the second reading: “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2).
Notice the four generations: Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others. That is building on the foundation.
Who is discipling you? And who are you discipling? If you cannot answer both questions, you are not building – you are just attending church.
#3. The Holy Spirit alone makes disciples
Since this is Pentecost Sunday, remember that the Holy Spirit is the Master Builder and the Ultimate Disciple Maker. In the gospel of John Jesus said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26) And again He said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16:13)
This means we cannot build any Christ-like life without the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit to become disciples of Jesus Christ. But the Holy Spirit does not force his way into any life, nor does He possess people to use them without their consent. The Holy Spirit only fills and works through yielded lives. As we submit and yield our lives to the Holy Spirit, He will guide us into all truth, and Jesus Christ is the truth (John 14: 6). The holy spirit will make the Word come alive through us in holy living.
Like the disciples, wait and pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to build on the foundation of Christ as His disciple.
As the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit they began to preach boldly. Christianity without the Spirit is a dry religion. But with the Spirit, even a quiet conversation can change a life forever.
Conclusion & Call to Action
Beloved, the foundation has been laid, but the building is incomplete. God is looking for disciple-makers who will build on the solid foundation of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today, as we celebrate Pentecost and Evangelism Sunday, I am asking you to do three things before next Sunday:
Receive a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit – surrender every area of your life you have been controlling.
Identify one person to disciple – start this week, even if just 15 minutes.
Become accountable – share your disciple-making goal with a brother or sister and report progress.
The early church did not grow by advertising; it grew by disciple-making. May the same Spirit that fell at Pentecost fall on us today, so that we will not be a crowd, but a community of builders.
