Reflection

Will only a few be saved? The man was interested in discussing salvation, whereas Jesus was interested in his soul. Rather than discussing the number to be saved, he ought to have been concerned if he would be part of that number. Hence Jesus exhorts him to strive to enter by the narrow door rather than engage in mere discussion. It is what we do that will count in the end, and not what we discuss. We will be judged, not according to the insight of our theology, but according to the depth of our charity. The Lord will identify us on the last day by our good deeds and not just by our fine talk or big degrees.

Reflection

Simon and Jude are two great apostles of Jesus. Known as the Zealot, Simon directed his political energy to the service of Christ and the GOSPEL, and Jude is the patron saint of impossible cases. These apostles formed the foundation of our faith. We are to imitate them in their zeal for the GOSPEL and follow their legacy of submission and commitment to jesus. We have been called and sent at baptism to share in the mission of bringing the good news to others. How are we responding to this task? Simon and Jude are examples to us, even in their death. Their life and witness continue to lead people to Jesus. Are we proud of our faith and are we willing to share it with others regardless of the obstacles we may encounter?

Reflection

Our God saves (Psalm 68:21), frees and heals us always! He is not conditioned by time, day or place. Paul tells us we have received a Spirit that frees us from fear, infirmity and hypocrisy. Fear cripples our faith; infirmity cripples our bodies, and hypocrisy cripples our spirituality. Many of us Christians are hypocrites. We have different values and judgments for different situations and persons. We have mastered wicked measures that keep people oppressed and some others free at the same time. We misinterpret the truth to blind us from seeing good. We manipulate the truth to accuse and hurt people and ostracise them from the community of God's children. Like the ruler of the synagogue, we abandon the good and complain about irrelevant details, laws and procedures. Many of us have become so wicked that we rejoice at the sufferings of others. We bind heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders giving unnecessary discomfort and trouble. We are called to do good always. Like Jesus, we are to bring comfort, truth, freedom to those who are oppressed, sick or heavy-laden.

Reflection

Today is Mission Sunday, when we are reminded of our responsibilities towards the mission of the Universal Church. Everyone is a missionary: a missionary in giving the love and care of Christ to all. Every little action done with love is a mission. When we do not know what mission activity we can be engaged in, the best mission work is to pray for others. The GOSPEL has placed before us two attitudes: pride and humility. When we are too much taken up with ourselves, it affects all our senses, including common sense. Then there will be no room for growth. Humility opens all our senses. A humble person does not have the fear of falling because s/he is already with feet firmly on the ground. A humble person will be able to see and meet the need of his/her neighbours; and that s the greatest missionary activity.

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Reflection

The parable of the fig tree is an image of how the Lord relates to us. He is slow to give up on us even when the signs are not promising. He pours His grace into our lives and ensures that we bear the rich fruit of the Holy Spirit. We have a part to play, though; the Lord cannot work in our lives despite us. The parable assures us that the Lord's efforts on our behalf will always far exceed whatever efforts we might make. As Paul says, grace abounds and, even when sin abounds, grace abounds all the more.

Reflection

St Paul speaks of the tension in every human soul when he says that the soul on wallS I do he does not do, but the evil he does not want to do he finds himself doing. This is the tension between good and evil that lies in every human heart. Every one of us can easily relate with this very sincere confession of St Paul. He was very much aware of his sinfulness. As Christians, we need to be sincere before God because He knows us through and through. St John Paul II was aware of his weakness and sought in every way to please the Lord. Making efforts to please God and relying on His grace will help us overcome this tension between good and evil.

Reflection

Jesus asserts that He has come not to bring 'peace' but 'division'. All who choose to follow His way will find themselves at odds with others, even with family members. Following Him and walking in His way will often mean saying 'no' to others' demands. Discipleship can be costly. Yet because of the Lord's own faithfulness unto death His Spirit has been poured into our hearts. The fire of that Spirit at work in our lives helps us to remain faithful and courageous in our following of the Lord.

Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming, and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful. And that

servant who knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall

receive a severe beating. But he who did not

know, and did what deserved a beating, shall

receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and

of him to whom men commit much they will

demand the more.

Reflection

The price of eternal redemption is eternal vigilance. In the parable, Jesus reminds us of the importance of being always on guard. As servants of Christ it would be much too risky to assume that the Master is delayed and therefore there is enough time to "play". He has told us that He will come unexpectedly, when no one is thinking of His return. Are we going to be faithful and commit ourselves to His ways or remain unfaithful by neglecting His path? The Lord comes to us every time; He comes to us through the Word and the Eucharist. He is in our midst whenever we gather in His name. We are to take the presence of Christ in these different forms seriously because these comings' help us prepare adequately for the future final coming
