SO FAR THIS WEEK
We have come to understand that the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ has been of great essence to us in opening a new portal of understanding of kindness; that the true kindness God wants us to express more perfectly is the kind that extends to the least deserved; not giving only to people who are able to give back to you, not opening up your heart to only your friends and the neutral but also opening up your heart of kindness to your enemies. This is the kind of life that pleases God.

Kindness is a component of the fruit of the Spirit. It is the very nature of God and He (God) expects that we manifest His nature. This distinguishes us from mere men. God wills that we exhibit kindness to the degree to which people will conclude that we are not ordinary human beings.

As we are being daily transformed into the image and the fullness of the stature of Christ, we ought to know that kindness is not in words but in action(s) and hence we must act out the God-kind of kindness that we profess.

In showing kindness, we are urged to do so unconditionally. In other words, we should do so without expecting anything in return. The Lord Himself will reward all acts of kindness because He is a just God and our labour of love will surely not be in vain. Whatever act of kindness we show, we ought to do so unto the Lord our God and not unto reception of the same. It is the reason why God encourages us not to trumpet our acts of goodness because the Lord who knows what we do in secret is able to reward us openly.

Even in these perilous times, we ought to let go of all fear, doubt, division, discrimination, and the like and pursue kindness, knowing that our good Lord has not given us the spirit of fear, but His own Spirit that bears the fruit of kindness which we ought to manifest at all times and to all manner of people. Under no circumstance should we segregate our kindness to a particular group of people or to only our fellow believers, rather, we must show kindness to all manner of persons.

We ought to maximize our efforts in ensuring that we do not get weary of showing kindness to all manner of people and instead continually extend a gesture of kindness to everyone as a never-ending act of love as our Lord does and enables us to do through His Spirit.................................................................
PRAYER: Father, help me to understand kindness and exhibit a God-kind nature not only in my words but in my action. Amen!

KINDNESS – THE NEVER-ENDING ACT OF LOVE

Scripture Readings: Galatians 6:2, 9-10; Romans 12:10

Exposition
Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:9-10 urges us as believers not to be weary of doing good to one another but rather seize every opportunity we have to do good and show kindness to one another. Easy as it may seem, it could be difficult to always show kindness to one another, especially in the face of challenging and trying times. There are times when we feel we have been taken advantage of or we are not being appreciated by the very ones we extend kindness to and this can cause us to begin to get weary of doing good. Scripture on the other hand admonishes us that no matter the circumstance, we ought not to get weary of doing good because in due time, we will receive our reward, if we do not give up. Kindness yields the fruit of goodness even though it might not be too visible at the point of sowing or even germination. The devil in many ways will discourage you from showing kindness, knowing very well the essence of kindness both to the giver and the receiver. Kindness goes a long way even to save lives and you might not know what your kindness has accomplished here on earth. However, when we get to heaven, where there is perfect knowledge, it will be clearly revealed to us how much fruit our labour yielded.

Kindness is a never-ending act of love and we ought to be devoted to it as members of the body of Christ. The devotion to this never-ending act of love is affirmed in Romans 10:12, where we are encouraged to be devoted to showing love to one another by trying our best to outdo ourselves in kindness. It is the Lord’s desire that we selflessly show kindness in love to one another without getting weary of doing so.................................................................
PRAYER: Dear Father, strengthen me to consistently show loving kindness without getting weary and take away anything that will be a hindrance to me in showing kindness as an act of love. (CA)................................................................

THE UNGUARDED HEART OF KINDNESS

Scripture Reading: Luke 10:25-37

Exposition
The Bible makes us understand that, we should not forget to open our doors to strangers, for in so doing, we may entertain angels unaware. In the times we currently find ourselves, it is easy to cook up all manner of excuses to not fulfil the above mandate, from security risk issues to tendencies of picking up diseases like COVID-19. However, Scripture is not limited by times and seasons. Similar risks existed in Jesus’ time. That is perhaps one of the reasons the priests and the Levites decided to bypass the wounded stranger from our Scripture reading.

They could have thought it was a set-up or some other excuse. But a stranger made a difference. The wounded man coming from Jerusalem most likely was a Jew and our Bible makes us understand that Jews had no dealings with Samaritans. This Samaritan broke the enmity by extending kindness to this ‘undeserving’ Jew when he most needed it. He removed the guard of fear from his heart and allowed God to take over. That is exactly what we should do, let the Spirit take charge of the fears that hinder our kindness. For God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Let us be led by God’s Spirit in doing good. He will lead us out of danger/evil and not into it but rather into his blessings.................................................................
PRAYER: Dear Father, I thank You that I am led by the Spirit and not my mind in showing kindness to the world. Take away every fear from my heart that I will show Your love more perfectly. (CA)................................................................

KINDNESS TO WHAT END?

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:31-46

Exposition
Our Scripture reading today explains to us, the end results of the kindness we exhibit to people. When we show kindness in truth and from a pure heart, we do not do only unto man, but unto God. On the other hand, when we deny others of kindness or do so from an impure heart, we do it unto God. That clearly is how God sees it.

As humans, when people give to us, we feel indebted to them and try as much as possible to pay back in words, in service, or in any way we can. It’s just because good deeds deserve rewards. Same way, when we extend kindness to God’s creation and ultimately to God, He rewards us. He never forgets our labour of love for Him. The good thing is that, if we show kindness expecting rewards from humans, they can only reward us up to what this life on earth can offer. However, God rewards our kindness even unto eternity. It is the reason Jesus encouraged the rich man who approached Him in Matthew 19:21 to sell his possessions and give to the poor, then he would have treasures in heaven. God credits our account in heaven when we extend kindness to Him through people.

There are several accounts where God gave an opportunity for people to extend kindness in order to bless them. The widow of Zarephath is one of them. One act of kindness gave her abundance and saw her through a period of famine. The end of our kindness is unto God, and as such, we should learn to show it from our hearts.................................................................
PRAYER: Dear Father, I thank You that You reward my kindness beyond measure. Help me see kindness to my neighbour through Your lenses to the glory of Your Holy name. (CA)................................................................

KINDNESS – THE GOD NATURE

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:16-26

Exposition
Kindness is a component of the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit is what is borne outward from something done inwardly. In other words, it is the outward results of an activity or work. The Bible indicates that kindness is a God-nature which He extends to us by virtue of the indwelling of His Spirit. As 2 Peter 1:4 explains, He has made us partakers of His divine nature.

God’s kindness requires a great degree of selflessness. God will not expect you to exhibit something he has not equipped you for. We have learnt that it is senseless to the world to extend kindness to the undeserving. It is senseless because, humanly speaking, it is extremely difficult to first do so, and second, to do so from your heart. However, God has made us spiritual beings causing us to die to the flesh and to be alive to himself through our faith in Jesus Christ.

It amazed me the first time I took notice of this scripture in 1 Corinthians 3:3 NKJV (for you are still carnal. For where there is envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?). That scripture reveals that God’s expectation for us is not that we should act as mere or ordinary human beings but to reveal that we are god-men. Men with God residing in us in the form of His Spirit, who reveals His very nature. No wonder the Bible tells of Christians that, in this world, we are like Jesus. It is very possible for you to show kindness from your heart not only to the deserving but to your enemies because the Spirit of God lives in you and through him, kindness has become your nature. People should see the degree to which you extend kindness and conclude that you are not an ordinary human being. That is God’s will for our lives. I believe the Word of God over my life that tells me that I am beyond ordinary and I am made to live the Christ-nature.................................................................
PRAYER: I exhibit kindness as Christ would portray on earth. I am dead to the flesh and alive to God in Jesus’ Name. (CA)................................................................

ACTED AND NOT MOUTHED

Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:33-35

Exposition
Our beloved Apostle Peter exhibited a perfect confirmation of the saying, “It’s easier said than done”. Peter, when Jesus expressed that His disciples were going to fall away on account of Him, declared that even if it was unto death, he would never disown Jesus. After this declaration, when Peter was actually out on the battlefield, he denied Jesus for fear of what the authorities would do to him (Matthew 26). Does it mean that Peter did not mean it or told a lie when he declared his allegiance to Jesus the first time? I doubt this. On the contrary, I believe he meant it with all genuineness; however, he did not weigh how he was going to back his intentions with actions.

Sometimes, after hearing all the sermons on how to exhibit kindness in a God-Kind way, we accept it in good faith but fail at practicing it. The Bible says whoever hears the word of God and does not practice it, is like one who looks into the mirror and turns away, forgetting what he looks like. After you have known that it is God’s will to extend kindness to the undeserved, keep your body under and practice it. Let your knowledge go beyond profession to practice.

Here are some enablers that can help you to be kind in actions and in truth. First of all, hear and appreciate (understand) God’s Word through constant meditation, keeping your gaze on the Word. This is the hearer that Jesus likened to the seed that fell on fertile ground. Second, pray for the grace to exhibit kindness. In Peter’s example, Jesus, knowing that the disciples were going to fall away, warned them at the Mount of Olives to pray that they would not fall into temptation. Finally, walk in the Spirit and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. Be willing to trust God and obey.................................................................
PRAYER: Dear Father, I thank You that I grow in grace to put kindness into practice and as I look intently into Your Word in obedience, I am being transformed to becoming more like You every day. (CA)................................................................

KNOWING KINDNESS

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:43-48

Exposition
The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ unto the earth is the greatest blessing to humanity. Jesus Christ showed the ways and nature of God much more perfectly than any other before him. Prior to Jesus’ coming, God’s people, Israel, knew kindness to be expressing generosity to people who deserved it, and when evil was done, it was an eye-for-an-eye and a tooth for a tooth. From our Scripture reading, Jesus explains the true kindness that God wants us to express more perfectly; the kindness that extends to the least deserved.

True kindness is not giving only to people who are able to give back to you or throwing a party for people capable of throwing the same for you or inviting you for the same. True kindness isn’t only opening up your heart to your friends and the neutral but also opening up your heart of kindness to your enemies. This is the kind of life that pleases God.

The world has defined morals by its own standard and you are considered weak or senseless if you extend kindness to people who are actively against your success or progress. Thanks be to God that He has revealed His way unto us through our Lord Jesus Christ. His will is that you reveal His kind of kindness so your light shines in this world of darkness for the praise of His glory.................................................................

GOVERNMENT RESTRAINS EVIL AND PROMOTES GOOD

Scripture Reading: Romans 13:1-7

Exposition
Apostle Paul, in the above text, makes it very clear that governments derive their authority from God to promote good and not evil. Again, he further encourages Christians to appreciate the fact that the one in authority is God’s servant for our good. Paul understood the need for Christian participation in government and the role of government in the work of God’s kingdom on earth. Good government can serve as a conduit for the furtherance of the gospel. Second, a good government creates a conducive environment for stability and growth and for people to live in peace, whereas a bad government fosters tension, unrest and instability. Third, whenever godly people are involved in the governance of any nation, then the legitimate institution of government will legitimately be used. However, if Christians see politics as a” dirty game” and sit unconcerned, then the legitimate institution of government will be used illegitimately throughout to ruin the fortunes of our nation. Christians must reassert their influence and be part of the decision-making process to promote good and restrain evil. As in Babylon, the prophet recognized that the secular government served a legitimate purpose in God’s plan for Israel. This is still true today. Good governments promote literacy, advance just laws, provide religious liberty and allow churches to preach and teach. Christians must see politics as an opportunity to get involved in government and work through civil authority for the advancement of justice and human good. William Wilberforce, a committed Christian, was the force behind the successful effort to abolish the slave trade in England. In the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. stood against racial segregation and discrimination. Be an agent of transformation through politics.................................................................

A CALL TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR

Scripture Readings: Matthew 22:35-39; Luke 10:25-27

Exposition
The Christian’s attitude towards politics should be seen as a call to love and serve our neighbours. You remember when Jesus was questioned by the religious authorities on the law, He responded that loving God with all your heart, soul and mind was the greatest commandment. He further added, “And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself”. Followers of Christ are called to love and serve their neighbours. But the question is, who is your “neighbour?” Jesus, responding to this question, told the parable of the Good Samaritan, indicating that irrespective of race, background, social status, tribe, gender and occupation, neighbourly love is owed. Interestingly, politics is one of the most important areas in which Christians who are actively involved are expected to demonstrate love to their neighbours. In fact, how can Christians claim to care about others and not engage in the arena that most profoundly shapes basic rights and freedoms? Caring for the hungry, orphans, widows, naked, sick, afflicted, marginalised, and the lonely is important to Jesus and should be to His followers as well. To achieve this, we must consciously be part of the process that formulates policies and laws which protect unborn children, strengthen marriages and families, advocate for the vulnerable, and provide an opportunity for the growth and development of the individual. Jesus said, “As you did it to one of the least of these you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40). fulfiling the biblical mandate to love one’s neighbour and care for the “least of these” should be a priority for every Christian politician. Politics is a means of effecting great change and must be engaged by Christians who love their neighbour.................................................................

POLITICS IS UNAVOIDABLE

Scripture Readings: Genesis 2:15; Ephesians 6:1-9

Exposition
Believers must adopt the mindset that earthly governing systems are vital to the task of furthering the gospel. It is true that Christians are citizens of the “City of God,” but currently we are also part of the “earthly city” and therefore must be good citizens of both cities. Because politics has real-world implications for Christian evangelism, missions and preaching of the gospel, Christians ought to engage in the political process by leveraging their rightful authority, advocating for laws and policies that contribute to human flourishing. Politics is about the effective and efficient use of resources for the benefit of the people. The Bible in Genesis 2:15 says God “took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it”. God has directed the man to take good care of all the resources and utilize them effectively. This makes politics unavoidable in our daily life. It is about the authority we have to pursue what is good and right for our people and to show forth the image and the glory of God in the decision-making and management of resources at our disposal. It becomes even more unavoidable if we genuinely want to show real concern and respond to the needs and concerns of our people. Beloved, do you know that in our day-to-day activities, right from the home through to our workplace and school, politics is seen all over, as we see authority structure even in the Christian home and even work? Take a moment and ponder over decisions taken at home, the management of resources at home, all the SRC elections right from primary to the tertiary level, the decision and policies of leadership at the workplace. With this, Christians must begin to appreciate that politics is part of us and God wants us to rise up to the task so that, as we actively engage in it, we show forth the image and the glory of God in it. Politics is not dirty for believers and even if it is dirty, let us be that soap and water to wash it. Politics is not rotten, and even if it is, let us be that salt to preserve it. Politics is not as dark as we see it and even if it is, let us be the light to shine forth the glory of God to brighten it.................................................................

THE CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW SPEAKS TO ALL AREAS OF LIFE.

Scripture Readings: Daniel 6:4-15; Galatians 6:10

Exposition
The Christian perception about politics should not be that anything besides praying, explicit preaching and teaching of the Bible is a deviation from the mission of the church. Influencing our society with the values and principles of the kingdom of God must be seen from a broader perspective. The Christian worldview should provide a comprehensive understanding of reality. Your worldview as a Christian must speak to all areas of life, including political engagement. Both the Old and the New Testaments speak about civil government and provide examples of faithful engagements by great men of God. Joseph and Daniel are examples from the Old Testament who served in civil government and influenced their world with the values and principles of the Kingdom of God. In the New Testament, Our Lord and master Jesus Himself engaged in holistic ministry by caring for the spiritual and physical needs of people. Feeding the hungry and healing diseases was an outworking extension of the reconciliatory message of the gospel. Politics is seeking the opportunity to better the lives of the citizenry, including the sick, the afflicted, the poor, the needy, the weak, the vulnerable, the underprivileged, the aged, children and all aspects of nation-building. In Galatians 6:10, the apostle Paul clearly states, *“As we have the opportunity, let us do good to everyone”*. Doing “good works” as believers should include participating in the political process because of the critical role government policies play in the life of people. Christians must have a worldview which includes a political theology that recognizes every area of life must be included in the “good works” of believers, especially politics, an area with far-reaching consequences.................................................................
