“ENDURANCE, A KEY TO OBTAIN GOD’S FAITHFULNESS”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Daniel 3:1-30
Hebrews 12:2-3
Philippians 2:9-11

EXPOSITION:

In the plain of Dura rose three men who were ready to sacrifice their lives on the altar of faithfulness to God. They told the king about how unwilling they were to defend the claims and accusations hurled against them. They made the king know how great the God of Israel is and how powerful He is to save them from the fiery furnace and how zealous they were to die if there was no salvation on their side (Daniel 3:16-17).

Whether dead or alive, they were ready to pay the price of endurance. They boldly declared their faith to Nebuchadnezzar. Culminating from their endurance which was otherwise seen as disobedience to Nebuchadnezzar, they were thrown into the fiery furnace. But Jesus, the Son of God, showed up in the fiery furnace. It looked like the fiery furnace has now become fireproof. This miracle revolutionized the whole province.

Their faithfulness to God necessitated a move of God which finally opened the way for them to progress from one position to another. Jesus Christ, our perfect example endured the cross in pain. Now, he is seated with God in the heavenly places. Also, his endurance has won him the name that is above every other name.

LIFE APPLICATION

As Christians, we must stand firm in season and out of season. We must do everything possible to remain faithful and endure in this crooked and perverse generation. Jesus says in John 16:33 that we should be of good cheer for he has overcome the world. Jesus never told us things will always be easy for us.

PRAYER:

Lord, grant me your grace that I may touch the prize for which you called me.

“FAITHFULNESS IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Luke 16:10-12
Colossians 3:9

EXPOSITION:

Faithfulness is one of the moral attributes of God which describes His very nature. God, therefore, expects that believers demonstrate this attribute of faithfulness in every area of their lives.

A person with a faithful heart exhibits the obedience and practice of the moral code of ethics, values, and precepts from God’s word. Faithfulness in interpersonal relations will produce honour, truth, and reliability.

Our faithfulness must be to God and to our fellow men. Many relationships have collapsed because of unfaithfulness. For love to abound in our interpersonal relationship, much of it hinges on being faithful to each other. When people are hard-pressed, they tend to compromise and sell out their faithful attitude. This may tear down relationships and may lead to serious conflict in inter-personal relationships.

Verse 12 of Luke 16 explains the need for faithfulness in our finances. Some people cheat on the less privileged for their money just because they need employment, need to travel, and need health attention. Some people collect money from friends and never pay it back, putting them in a state of jeopardy.

We have been advised in Colossians 3:9 that we should not lie to one another. Our faithfulness in our vertical relationship with God must have a complete positive relation in our horizontal relationship with fellow men.

PRAYER:

Pay as you are led by the Holy Spirit.

“THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD: OUR REFUGE”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Micah 7:7
Joshua 23:14
Deuteronomy 7:9

EXPOSITION:

God’s faithfulness is true and has been tested many times in the Bible. His unchanging nature to His people is a warranty and a security during danger. When storms rage and troubles roll, the faithfulness of God or the unchanging nature of God gives an answer to the situation.

The prophet Micah in Micah 7:7 says that, “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Saviour; my God will hear me.” In Joshua 23:14, the Bible is saying that all the good promises of God have never failed. Every promise of God shall be fulfilled. This shows that it is only through the faithfulness of God that we can have our refuge.

Because God is unchanging, relying on Him is of great assurance and hope that he will not fail us. You may be desperately looking for a place to take refuge in. The only place that one can have his or her peace is to seek refuge in the faithful God.

Deuteronomy 7:9 confirms that the Lord is a faithful God and He keep His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love and keep His commandment. This confirms to the fact that, taking refuge in Him is of great benefit because He cannot change. He changes situation but does not change. Someone has said, “God is the unchangeable changer.”

LIFE APPLICATION

If you lean in the arms of men, it will fail you. Trusting in God’s faithfulness is a great ever abiding refuge for the righteous one. Money, fame, and prestige will all disappoint, but having faith in God’s faithfulness will forever give you His protection which is forever assured.

PRAYER:

God, I am grateful for your faithfulness showed towards me. I pray that Your Holy Spirit will help me to continually take refuge in your ever-abiding faithfulness.

“PRESSURED TO DENY GOD”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Daniel 3:13-17
Revelation 2:10

EXPOSITION:

Christians are hard pressed on every side to deny God more especially in this contemporary world. From our scripture we read in Daniel 3:13-17, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were pressured to deny God but they chose to be faithful regardless of the consequences. The terror of the furnace had no effect on their minds to induce them to alter the resolution they had taken nor change their purpose to serve God.

Most often, Christians give excuses which sound sensible to them to deny God when they are hard pressed. If the three friends had given up, never again could they talk about the power of God above all other gods.

In Revelation 2:10, the Bible says that when we are tempted and put into prison by the devil for ten days, we must be faithful unto death and he will give us crown of life. In the Bible, ten days also refers to a brief time or period (Gen. 24:55, Dan. 1:12, Acts 25:6), so by implication the devil may cause us to suffer but we are to see it as a brief time. What excuses do you use for not standing for God in those brief times of suffering?

LIFE APPLICATION

We should be faithful to serve God whether He intervenes on our behalf or not. Jesus never said that by being faithful to Him, we will avoid troubles, suffering and persecution. It is only when we remain faithful then will our faith prove to be genuine. We remain faithful by keeping our eyes on Christ and on what He promises us now and in the future. Our sufferings and trials are not worth compared to our eternal reward (Rom. 8:18).

PRAYER:

Pray as you are led by the Holy Spirit.

“THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD - THE ATTRIBUTE OF GOD”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Exodus 34:6
Psalm 106:8
Deuteronomy 7:9

EXPOSITION:

An attribute refers to the unique characteristic of something. To God, it is the unique characteristics of His being or Nature. These attributes of God enable us to understand who God truly is.

God’s natural and moral attributes are the inherent characteristics that are closely associated with or those belonging to Him. Faithfulness means to be true in whatever you do. Faithfulness is one of the moral attributes of God that He shares with man.

In Exodus 34:6, God revealed Himself to Moses as, “The Lord, the Lord God, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness…” The Bible further states that, “He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations…” This truly reveals to us the nature of God’s faithfulness.

This revelation about God and His nature teaches us that, He is true to His Name, He is true to His Character and true to His word. This means that He never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. He is a dependable God who keeps to His covenant of love and to His promises.

LIFE APPLICATION

Having a full knowledge of God’s attributes as Christians are decisive to a mature Christian life, but our understanding of God’s faithfulness goes a long way to develop the important trust in our relationship with God. If we trust that God is faithful, then we will have faith in Him. With this assurance, our trust is enough to support a good and growing relationship with God even when problems occur.

PRAYER:

Pray as you are led by the Holy Spirit.

“THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

1 Thessalonians 5:24
Lamentations 3:23
Psalm 89:2

EXPOSITION:

To be faithful implies a long, continued, and steadfast fidelity to whatever one is bound to by a pledge, duty, or obligation. It also means to be safely trusted, reliable and dependable. God is faithful for He is honest and never changes; He will always do what He has said and fulfills what He has promised.

God’s faithfulness is kept in His word. His faithfulness acts in accordance with the covenant He has with His people. He does nothing outside what He has promised.

The Apostle Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:24 that “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” This means that the faithfulness of God towards those He has called is always kept intact when they keep to His word.

This faithfulness of God is renewed every morning as stated in Lamentations 3:23. Because His faithfulness in renewed every morning, our security for today, tomorrow and the days ahead has been catered for.

LIFE APPLICATION

As children of God, we must always put all our trust in the one (God) who has called us. We must walk in accordance with the word of God because He does nothing outside His word. When we stay connected to Him and remain faithful to the Lord, His faithfulness towards us will always be there.

PRAYER:

Oh God, thank You for your faithfulness toward me. I pray that You help me to remain faithful to You in everything I do in Jesus Name.

“SO FAR THIS WEEK”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Isaiah 43:18-19
Exodus 33:13-17

EXPOSITION:

We have been looking at the promises of God for us this year and the attitudes we have to cultivate for these promises to be fulfilled in our lives. The word of God for us this year is that He is doing a new thing.

We need to forget the past; the failures, mistakes, and even the successes, and perceive the new thing He is about to do in our lives with the eyes of faith. Studying and obedience to the word of God and prayer are necessary in this regard. We also need to be diligent to seek the will of God for our lives and follow hard after it.

PRAYER:

Lord, please help me apply myself to Your word this year so that your promise will manifest in my life. Amen.

“THROUGH THE EYES OF FAITH”

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Proverbs 3:5-6
Isaiah 43:18-19

EXPOSITION:

The beginning of each year comes with different reactions from different people. For some, there are high expectations and big dreams to look forward to. Others may be filled with fears and uncertainties whilst some may also be indifferent and see each year as being the same. The truth, however, is that none of us know what the year really holds for us, but the good news is that we can bank our hopes on the promises of God for our lives.

God has promised to make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert for His people. This promise came to the Jews at a time when they were in exile in Babylon and it sounded almost impossible for them to be delivered from the hands of the super-power of the then known world. He did not only promise them a return home through the wilderness but also a provision (rivers, not a river) in the desert so that their journey could be stress-free.

KEY VERSE:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)

LESSON/LIFE APPLICATION:

The Bible declares that “as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are [God’s] ways higher than [our] ways and [His] thoughts than [our] thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9; NIV). It is therefore a great privilege to lean on God. When we lean on our own understanding, we can only produce results that ordinary people produce. Extra-ordinary results are produced by those who are totally dependent on God.

Because His thoughts and ways are far higher than ours, we may not understand Him sometimes, but total faith in Him will make us cling to Him even when the way ahead is uncertain or bleak.

PRAYER:

Lord, I put my total trust in You for the journey ahead of me. Amen.

A NEW BEGINNING

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Isaiah 43:18-19
Philippians 3:13-16

EXPOSITION:

God in His wisdom has divided time into days, weeks, months, years and seasons so that wecan have the opportunity to evaluate our lives and have a fresh start. As the year 2021 begins today, it is worth evaluating how you fared in 2020: the successes, failures and challenges.

Evaluating the past helps to make better decisions for the future, but unfortunately the pastcan also be a prison. Success in the past can breed complacency whilst failures can make onegive up on the future.

Apostle Paul therefore gives us his key to reaching his purpose: “forgetting what is behindand straining towards what is ahead” (Phil. 3:13b; NIV). Rick Warren in “The PurposeDriven Life” states, “We are products of our past but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”

We are blessed to serve the God who holds the future. His word for us this year is to forgetabout the setbacks in the year 2020 and not dwell on them because He is doing a new thing.

The past gives us experiences for the future, but if God says we should forget about the past, it means we do not need the experiences from the past for the new things He is doing in thefuture. What we need is a discerning and obedient heart to follow Him closely as He takes usto new territories this year.

LESSON/LIFE APPLICATION:

In order to be very successful this year, you need to perceive a new thing ahead; have a goalahead. A goal not based on human wishes but based on the new thing God is about doing inyour life this year. It begins with perceiving the will of God for your life this year throughprayer and seeing it with the eyes of faith.

PRAYER:

Lord, please help me to know the new thing that You are about to do in my life this year?

"THE INEVITABLE CONCLUSION 2"

SCRIPTURE READING:

2 Timothy 4:1-8

EXPOSITION:

Apostle Paul, who was also called Saul, wrote this to Timothy, his son in the Lord. Note thatthis Saul, like King Saul we studied about yesterday, was a Benjamite, and also called byGod to serve. Here again, the Scripture captures his last statement he made about himself. His second letter to Timothy was actually his last letter, and he was beheaded under Nero afterwriting this letter.

Here too, we see a very touching summary of a man about his own life: I have fought a good fight… You see, Paul kept his focus on his assignment to the end, and was actually convincedthat he had fully made full proof of his calling, and that was the bedrock from which he was admonishing Timothy to also work hard.

CRITICAL VERSE:

2 Timothy 4:6, NKJV “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time ofmy departure is at hand.”

LIFE APPLICATION:

Dear brothers and sisters, as we end the year today, know that the end is sure, even for themost dedicated. What will make the difference is how your life is summed up. Ask yourself: “Am I modeling my life after the ‘Old Testament Saul’ or the ‘New Testament Saul?”

If you focus on the right things, and keep your life checked with the gospel you profess, you can one day say confidently that ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and Ihave remained faithful.’

PRAYER: God, help me do the right things to end rightly on the day of reckoning.
