On January 11, 1907, ministers who had been using the name “Holiness Church” for their congregations adopted the name “CHURCH OF GOD.”

While meeting for their second General Assembly at the Union Grove church in Bradley County, Tenn. (shown here in a later photo), ministers held a “Preachers Conference.” During that meeting, they discussed forms used for credentialed ministers, the office of evangelist, and the name of the church. According to the minutes of their meeting, the decision to adopt the name Church of God “was made harmoniously” in accordance with 1 Corinthians 1:2 and 2 Corinthians 1:1.

Pastor and Assembly Moderator, A.J. Tomlinson, later recalled in his book, “The Last Great Conflict,” “At a session held at 8:30 on Friday morning, January 11, 1907, the name ‘Church of God’ was adopted, with the addition of the name of the place or locality where it existed….

This, however, was not meant to debar the use of the other Scriptural names, such as ‘The Church,’ ‘Churches in Christ,’ ‘Church….in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,’ etc.”
