Have you ever wondered why a bishop sometimes blesses the people while walking in procession, especially during the entrance or at the end of Mass?

In the Catholic tradition, the bishop is not only a leader who presides over the liturgy; he is also a spirịtual father and shepherd of the faithful entrusted to his care. When he walks in procession and blesses the people, it is a visible sign of that pastoral role. Through the blessing, he extends the grace of God to the people even outside the formal moments of the Mass.

A bishop carries the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders, which means he has the authority to sanctify, teach, and govern the faithful in his diocese. When he raises his hand to bless the people during a procession, it reflects this role of sanctifying the community. The gesture reminds the faithful that the shepherd walks among his people and calls down God’s protection upon them.
