WHAT ABOUT REVIVAL?
Isaiah 32:13-15
So far we've seen the purpose, the proof and possession of the power of the Holy Spirit. However there is another significant work of the Holy Spirit historically known as Revival.
Almost all the high points of the church from the day of Pentecost till now are characterized by this awesome phenomenon known as Revival. It's unfortunate but the church's life is not the same since it's inception. Sometimes decline sets in. The spiritual life of the church is not as dynamic as it should be. Things begin to wane. This is where revival comes in. It's a glorious known fact throughout church history.
How exactly do we explain Revival? The first thing is to know what it is not. It is not a humanly engineered religious fervour. It's not even a church's program. It's not our own falsely induced excitement. It's not large people gathering. Entertainment and fun can gather people. We don't need that. That is below the awesomeness of such a word and reality throughout the church.
Revival is best known by those who experience it. It is a time of renewed spiritual vitality, vigour and uncommon fruitfulness in the lives of believers and the local church. What we should know is that, it happens. It's a known possibility throughout the life of the church.
The believers and the local church they belong to come alive to the degree that the community of the world takes notice and even comes under its influence. Sinners get converted in great numbers and are added to the church. Saints become more lively in our living LORD. It shows on us like a burning flame. Revival is heaven's own advertisement of the saints and the church of Jesus Christ. What happened on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out is the prototype of heaven-sent revival. There was no human strings or genius at work. It was simply the Holy Spirit.
Many of us have not witnessed that before. So for us, nothing can be better than what we have and call our Christian lives and church. But in the promise of the Holy Spirit is also a prospect for Revival. The church can be drenched with God's grace until we overflow in spiritual life and power.
But there is a serious personal and corporate responsibility for revival. We must acknowledge our low level and impoverished spiritual state. That's key. Then we must be zealous and repent. We must repent of sin, worldliness and lukewarmness. We must detest spiritual dullness and barreness.
Then we must set our hearts to pray until this blessing comes down to fertilize and vitalize our lives. By the way, complacency is the mortal enemy of revival (Revelation 3:17). Revival responds to hunger, thirst and perseverance.
KEY VERSE: Isaiah 32:15 KJV
Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
