WHAT ABOUT REVIVAL?

Isaiah 32:13-15

So far we've seen the purpose, the proof and possession of the power of the Holy Spirit. However there is another significant work of the Holy Spirit historically known as Revival.

Almost all the high points of the church from the day of Pentecost till now are characterized by this awesome phenomenon known as Revival. It's unfortunate but the church's life is not the same since it's inception. Sometimes decline sets in. The spiritual life of the church is not as dynamic as it should be. Things begin to wane. This is where revival comes in. It's a glorious known fact throughout church history.

How exactly do we explain Revival? The first thing is to know what it is not. It is not a humanly engineered religious fervour. It's not even a church's program. It's not our own falsely induced excitement. It's not large people gathering. Entertainment and fun can gather people. We don't need that. That is below the awesomeness of such a word and reality throughout the church.

Revival is best known by those who experience it. It is a time of renewed spiritual vitality, vigour and uncommon fruitfulness in the lives of believers and the local church. What we should know is that, it happens. It's a known possibility throughout the life of the church.

The believers and the local church they belong to come alive to the degree that the community of the world takes notice and even comes under its influence. Sinners get converted in great numbers and are added to the church. Saints become more lively in our living LORD. It shows on us like a burning flame. Revival is heaven's own advertisement of the saints and the church of Jesus Christ. What happened on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out is the prototype of heaven-sent revival. There was no human strings or genius at work. It was simply the Holy Spirit.

Many of us have not witnessed that before. So for us, nothing can be better than what we have and call our Christian lives and church. But in the promise of the Holy Spirit is also a prospect for Revival. The church can be drenched with God's grace until we overflow in spiritual life and power.

But there is a serious personal and corporate responsibility for revival. We must acknowledge our low level and impoverished spiritual state. That's key. Then we must be zealous and repent. We must repent of sin, worldliness and lukewarmness. We must detest spiritual dullness and barreness.

Then we must set our hearts to pray until this blessing comes down to fertilize and vitalize our lives. By the way, complacency is the mortal enemy of revival (Revelation 3:17). Revival responds to hunger, thirst and perseverance.

KEY VERSE: Isaiah 32:15 KJV
Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

POSSESSION OF POWER FROM ON HIGH

ACTS 1:14

Obviously, God wants his church to possess the power that will convert multitudes unto him. But how? Continuous prayer and supplication. Thatโ€™s what the early church did. They didnโ€™t try to crank up the power. Neither did they try to manipulate the emotions of each other with noise, silence or some gimmick. They simply asked God (Luke 11:9-13).

The authentic history of the Christian church has proven time and again that when Godโ€™s people devote themselves to continuous prayer and supplication in their desperate need of power to witness to their world, God always answers. Why not? Godโ€™s heart is towards a lost world. He is not willing that any should perish.

This is a challenge to the present-day church that instead of trying to play the genius at winning a lost world with all conceivable strategies which sometimes even compromises the gospel, we should humbly come to the secret place of prayer and supplication and ask God to baptize us with his own power. That is what the early church did as they were locked up in the Upper room. On this matter of witnessing, there is no power to get it done but the power of God.

What a call to the humility and simplicity of continuous prayer and supplication. Then and only then shall there be power from on high to witness to the world.

They were gathered in an upper chamber,
As commanded by the risen Lord,
And the promise of the Father
There they sought with one accord,
When the Holy Ghost from heaven descended
Like a rushing wind and tongues of fire:
So dear Lord, we seek Thy blessing,
Come with glory now our hearts inspire.

KEY VERSE: Acts 1:14 - These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

DAILY SOARING PRAYERS: Ask, seek and knock that the power of the Holy Spirit will come on your life for gospel witnessing.

PROOF OF POWER FROM ON HIGH

ACTS 2:41, 42

How do we the power received after the Holy Ghost is come is at work? The proof of power from on high is conversions of sinners to the LORD.

The power that believers possess after the Holy Ghost comes on them results in the conversions of people to the LORD Jesus Christ. That is the repetitive pattern in the book of Acts and in the authentic history of the church especially during times of revival (Acts 5:14, Acts 11:24).

There may be miracles, signs and wonders occurring but the greatest proof of the power we receive after the Holy Ghost comes on us is seeing sinners converted. In fact, the miracles, signs amd wonders are given by God for the same purpose of converting sinners. Every miracle in the book of Acts led to more conversions. The first miracle of a lame man walking led to the conversions of thousands of people (Acts 4:4). So were the other miracles (Acts 8:5-12).

Changed lives is the greatest proof of God's power at work. Sinners are converted and added to the church as a proof of the power of the Holy Spirit upon ordinary believers. If you care about the conversions of sinners, this is the secret; the power of the Holy Spirit

KEY VERSE: Acts 2:41 KJV
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

PURPOSE OF POWER FROM ON HIGH

ACTS 1:8

God is a God of purpose. He never does anything or gives us a gift by his grace without a purpose.

For instance, He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. That is purpose. Jesus was manifested to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). That is purpose.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit, which is the promise of the Father was sent down from heaven for a purpose. Jesus himself stated it explicitly to his disciples before his Ascension. He said they shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come, and they shall be his WITNESSES. That's the purpose.

You see, in the New Testament, you hardly see anywhere the apostles and church leaders were coercing or even motivating the people to go out and witness. You can't find that. What you rather see is a people who are internally motivated, joyfully compelled and strategically directed by the Holy Spirit to witness of Jesus (Acts 8:4, 5, 25, 29; Acts 9:17-21, Acts 10:19-22; Acts 11:19, 20).

The power of the Holy Spirit makes a believer a witness. It is something only the Holy Spirit can make in the same way Jesus said to the disciples "follow me and I will make you fishers of men". The Holy Spirit makes us witnesses of Jesus.

If we will witness like the early Christians did even in the face of danger and threat to life, then one thing is certain, we need the power of the Holy Spirit. And when He comes on you, only then do you become a witness.

Witnessing is not a mere human activity or something you can just learn. It's more than that. The power of the Holy Spirit is for the purpose of witnessing. Let's ask for the Holy Spirit to come on us, then shall we have power to be witnesses indeed. He will make us. That's why He is come.

The Comforter has come,
The Comforter has come!
The Holy Ghost from heaven,
The Lordโ€™s dear promise given;
Oh, spread the gospel around,
Wherever man is foundโ€”
The Comforter has come!

KEY VERSE: Acts 1:8 KJV
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

DAILY SOARING PRAYERS: Oh Holy Spirit, make me a witness by thy power. Only you can make me a witness.

WE HAVE RECEIVED APOSTLESHIP

ROMANS 1:5

Growing up as a Christian, a now matured believer once said he didn't know the difference between apostle and epistle. Well, we all grow in knowledge. So that's not a spiritual crime.

The word apostle simply means a sent one. But he is not just sent. He or she is sent for a definite task. He is sent to execute a mission. It is from this word we get "apostleship".

Originally Jesus chose twelve men to be with him. They were primarily his students, learners or disciples (Mark 3:14). But their apprenticeship was intended for apostleship (Luke 6:13). Jesus knew exactly what he was doing with them. He wanted them to know him so well and then make him known to the world. That is the business of apostleship. And it worked. They knew him and made him known. There was no confusion in their minds about Jesus when they took off as his witnesses (Acts 2:36). They even suffered for their claims and witness about Jesus (Acts 5:40). That's apostleship.

But then, the work of apostleship is extended to all who believe in Jesus, not just the original twelve. It's basically the work of making Jesus known to others. That doesn't sound complicated. Does it?

Every child of God is enlisted into apostleship. You are enlisted into being a witness of Jesus. The business of witnessing of Jesus didn't end with the twelve original apostles. It is meant to continue with every generation of believers in Jesus. We are all his witnesses.

Welcome to apostleship. You are a witness. Go out to the world and make Jesus known. That's the point.

WE HAVE RECEIVED GRACE

ROMANS 1:5-7

Have you received the grace of our LORD Jesus Christ? There was no doubt in the mind of the apostle Paul and the dear saints he was writing to at Rome. They were heirs of God's grace.

What did that mean? Was everyone suddenly rich and dripping in wealth? Not really. Was everyone living in great mansions? Of course not. Were they riding some of the beautiful cars in town? Not at all. These things are not bad in themselves but that's not what grace is about. They don't even come close.

So what's the grace that they had received? Well, if you knew Rome then, it was a very corrupt and immoral society. Deep within their culture was very despicable acts of evil (Romans 1:24-32). Does it look just like our days? Sure.

Just look around. Old Rome is now gone. But not much has changed in terms of human nature. Wickedness is everywhere. Immorality is rationalized and in some places legalized. Corruption and sexual perversion is the fashion of the day. Just as a fish drinks from the water it is in, so do people imbibe the culture they're in. We live in a perverse and evil culture.

But grace comes to make a difference. It comes to draw a circle around us in the evil culture which sets us apart from it, though we are in it. That's grace for real. Classic! Authentic. Grace draws a distinction between us and the culture. It makes the culture to marvel at us. They marvel because we are no more part of the trend and norms.

Grace delivers us from this present evil world (Galatians 1:3-5). That's grace. It extracts us from the moral filthiness and cultural abominations of the age (Titus 2:11, 12). And yet we are joyful for that extraction. We are happy and satisfied we are no longer of this world, even though we are in it. That's grace.

Grace comes with forgiveness for all our sins and sets us on a highway of holiness (Isaiah 35:8-10, Romans 6:22). That's the grace we have received. It gives us a radically different walk and life, direction and destination.

That's why Jesus came. That's why he died. That's why he resurrected from death. By the way, without this grace, we are condemned. But by the grace received we have become vessels of mercy. (Romans 9:23-26). We attract his kindness all the time. Have you received grace? We can be saints in our "Rome" today because we have received grace.

LET'S APPROACH GRACE

ROMANS 1:1-7

Jesus stands for God's grace. It is mercy all! Grace so mmense and free expressed in the death, burial and resurrection of the LORD Jesus Christ.

This is the awesome grace of God that has appeared to all men. In it we find forgiveness of sins and redemption through his blood (Ephesians 1:7). In it Adam's lost race are restored back to God. What confronted us during the Easter should never be forgotten. It was a grace confrontation. Yes, all of grace that it might be by faith.

The knowledge and experience of the grace of God is far greater than anything besides which you could call a blessing. The grace of God itself extended to sin-sick, death-doomed humanity is the blessing of all blessings (Acts 3:26). This blessing should never be obscured nor confused with other lesser blessings (Romans 4:7, 8). It is the supreme blessing of all. Without it, we are all doomed. It is a blessing that has no rival nor substitute. Oh, wonderful grace.

Have you ever stopped to gaze on God's matchless grace, received it with all gladness and live in gratitude for it? (Titus 2:11-14) It's a new week all by his mercies. Let's approach grace. A Christian can't forget grace. And the world should be reminded of this grace of God. Worship and witness of his grace.

KEY VERSE: Romans 1:7 KJV
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

ASSURANCE OF THE GOSPEL

DAILY STRENGTH READING ๐Ÿ“–

ASSURANCE OF THE GOSPEL

1 PETER 1:12; 5:12

The Gospel! Simple word but great implications for all people. All that Jesus came to do and its implications is the Gospel. There is one Gospel of Jesus Christ. There will always be one Gospel. Anything besides this one Gospel brings the proponent and perpetrator under a curse (Galatians 1:1-10).

First, the assurance of the gospel matters for assurance of salvation itself. We can't claim assurance of salvation outside the assurance of the gospel. A room is by design part of house. You can't claim a room outside the house. It is within the house. Assurance of the salvation is like that. It is within the assurance of the gospel. If you don't know the gospel, how can you know and be assured that you are saved? (1 Corinthians 15: 1-4).

Moreover, assurance of the gospel is necessary for gospel living. Not every life passes for the life of the gospel. There is a life that is according to the gospel (Ephesians 4:17-24). It is a clear assurance of the gospel that dictates a life of the gospel. Any misconception of the gospel will lead to another life, but not gospel life. We should take note.

Assurance of the gospel is necessary for assurance itself, that is assurance of the faith of Jesus Christ. You need to know what you have believed, received and wherein you stand (Colossians 2:6-8). You can't be hazy or uncertain about it. You need a firm assurance of faith. That's how to make any clear headway in your Christian life. Assurance of the gospel matters.

The Gospel! Simple but great implications for all people. It's assurance is equally a great thing.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of his Spirit, washed in His blood

KEY VERSE: 1 Peter 5:12 KJV
By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.

DAILY SOARING PRAYERS: Grant me LORD robust assurance of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
