DO NOT COMMIT SU***DE

TEXT: ACTS 16:27-34

MEMORY VERSE: "But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here" (ACTS 16:28).

The text under consideration clearly exposes the suicidal intention of the prison jailor where Paul and Silas were held captive as a result of their expression of faith in the deliverance of the damsel possessed with a spirit of divination.

Su***de is an intentional killing of oneself. The prison jailor, on waking up and seeing the prison doors open, attempted su***de supposing the prisoners had fled. Su***de is not, and can never be a solution. Su***de is an express route to hell fire. The rate of su***de is on the increase among youngsters today due to several reasons, ranging from fear, frustration, depression, financial lack, to academic failure.

Suicidal thoughts should not be entertained at all. No man has the right to take his life since he did not create it. Thanks be to God for the timely intervention of Paul. Christ is always the solution. The prison jailor accepted the Lord, alongside his household. In like manner, sinners and backslidders are to repent and turn to the Lord before it is too late.

QUOTE: Do not kill yourself.

CHALLENGE: Christ is always the solution.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to trust in You always.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 01, 2024

NO EXCHANGE WORTH YOUR SOUL

TEXT: MARK 8:35-37

KEY VERSE: "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (MARK 8:36, 37).

Just what value can anyone place on his or her soul? The hymn writer, Jim Wright, answers with questions of his own, in the refrain from his hymn: 'Have You Counted The Cost'. He wrote: "Have you counted the cost, if your soul should be lost?
Tho' you gain the whole world for your own, Even now, it may be that the line you have crossed,
Have you counted, have you counted the cost?"

Our text reveals the paradox of life as it relates to the issue of the soul and the eternal consequence of its loss. Many people spend their energy in pursuit of pleasure, position, possession and power. They trade their souls by joining cults, engaging in money rituals, gambling, prostitution and partaking in unethical business practices just to gain the things of this world. They forget that earthly possessions are temporal and replaceable when lost, but the loss of the soul is an irreparable loss.

Pleasure, possessions, philosophy and whatever goodie of the world we gain cannot be sustained through all times. Indeed, time and decay will soon make them fade. "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out" (1 Timothy 6:7). All those who profess to be Christians but are haughty and desperate for wealth and position, either in the world or in the Church are playing with their souls and eternal destiny. The most important decision anyone can make is to ensure that his soul is prepared for heaven. There is only one way to save your soul: turn over your life to Jesus Christ and allow Him to save your soul from hell. He promises that whosoever "that cometh to [Him]; [He] will in no wise cast out."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Whatever you gain at the expense of your soul is a great loss.

THE POWER OF PRAISE

KEY VERSE: “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” Acts 16:25

TEXT: ACTS 16:16-26

Paul and Silas had been falsely accused, beaten unjustly and locked up in the prison for casting out the demon in a young lady. She had been using soothsaying as a money-making business for her master. When her master discovered that their deception and means of livelihood was over, he encouraged the multitude to beat up Paul and Silas. Then with the authority of the magistrate, they were locked up in the prison.

At midnight, in spite of their weakness and bodily injuries, Paul and Silas chose to pray and sing praise the Lord! God intervened and delivered them. Midnight represents the hour of need, loneliness and despair. At such a time, even though it may be difficult to praise God, still do so as it moves the hand of God to do something new and extraordinary.

PRAYER: Lord, give me a heart that praises you all the time.

THE CENTURION’S FAITH

MEMORY VERSE: “When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel”

TEXT: MATTHEW 8:5-13

Centurions were commanders of 100 Roman soldiers. These men were assigned to various parts of the Roman Empire for various duties, including peace-keeping. Certainly, some of these men were employed for the purpose of executing people condemned to death for any misdeed or crime of which Jesus Christ was accused. Instead of harping on his own worthiness, he sought Jesus' healing alone with all humility. We learn several truths about faith from this scripture: that to please God (1) we must have faith in Him, (2) we must believe that He exists, and (3) we must believe that He will answer us when we want to know Him or to get help from Him.

God expects His children to be people of extraordinary faith like the centurion who acknowledged Jesus as all-powerful. He knew that God had the power to speak things into being. The centurion's great faith showed that he believed in Jesus and that He had the power to heal. The Roman centurion showed us that we can deal with any hard situation with faith in God.

QUOTE: We must have faith in Him.

PRAYER: Holy Father, increase my faith, in Jesus’ name.

CHALLENGE: Like the centurion, pray believing.

THE MINISTRY OF ANGELS

KEY VERSE: “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

TEXT: HEBREWS 1:13-14

Angels are creatures of God and they live in Heaven. They have different ranks and operations. Some are for war, like Angel Michael, some are guardians, some for healing, some for sounds like the one that would blow the trumpet on the last day, some are for delivering messages. They are generally ministering spirits and are available for our service.

The Bible makes us to understand that as born again children of God, angels are sent to us to minister unto us, meaning that God has given us angels to carry out assignment on our behalf. The Bible says that God gives his angels charge over us to keep us in our ways. If you are saved, why are you still scared of the dark and bad occurrence when you have angels with you? Engage your angels; send them to take care of your relative who is in danger, tell them to follow you and all your loved ones wherever you go to avoid evil attack. Are you a believer today, send your angels on errands and begin to enjoy their ministry. However, our prayers must be sent to God through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son.

PRAYER: Lord, send Your angels to guard me in all my journey.

DANGEROUS GIFTS

KEY VERSE: “Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.” Genesis 25:34

TEXT: GENESIS 25:29-34

Although gifts often make children happy, it is not all gifts that are helpful. Jacob received a gift of pottage (food) from his brother Esau, but lost the right to greater blessings. Judas received 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus. He collected the money but died without eve spending it.
What a bad gift!

Every gift from Satan is evil regardless of , how beautiful or nice it . appears Everyone is tempted by Satan to disobey God's word in exchange for a “gift” that provides temporary gain and enjoyment. Do not be greedy and steal. Do not believe that those who live in sin are enjoying and having fun. Reject every evil suggestion and do not allow dirty thoughts in your heart. The pain and the eternal sorrow that come with those “dangerous gifts” are greater than the temporary gain.

However, there is a gift from God that everyone must receive: forgiveness of sin and salvation through Jesus Christ. Anyone who does not have this gift will not get to heaven. The gift is available for every child who is a sinner. Repent of all your sins now and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Saviour.

PRAYER: Dear Father, please help me overcome any temptation to sin against you.

MIRACLES THROUGH PRAYERS

KEY VERSE: “And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet:”Exodus 15:25a

TEXT: EXODUS 15:22-27

“A day without prayer is a day without blessing and a life without prayer is a life without power.” (Edwin Harkey) Prayer is one of the means to connect with our God, to turn situations around, change the course of nature and to have desires granted. Unpleasant situations around our personal life, family, church, nation and even globally can be turned the right side up through earnest prayers.

Moses the man of God was faced with the challenge of getting water for the children of Israel. He cried unto God; who alone can make the impossible to become possible. The water of Marah which was bitter was made sweet through Moses' prayers. Are there some bitter situations in your life? The God that made the water of Marah sweet will take all the bitterness away in Jesus' Name. Take your case to Him in prayer now.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please take all bitter situations out of my life today.

GOD OF WONDERS!

TEXT: JOB 9:5-10

Key Verse: "Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number" (Job 9:10).

During an intense war, a young soldier was separated from his comrades while retreating. Feeling distressed, he ran for safety while the enemy chased on. He found an old abandoned building and went to hide in one of the dark rooms.

The soldier felt safe for a while, then it dawned on him that his enemies will know he is there, and that may be his end. He then looked up to heaven and prayed that God will save him from the coming danger.

As the soldier finished his prayers, God sent a spider to weave a web at the entrance of the room. He thought within himself, can a spider's web save one from gun shots? Our God doeth great things that are past finding out! Indeed, God turned back the enemies when they saw the web, thinking that the room had been out of use for a long time.

God works in ways that are beyond man's understanding. All you need to do is to trust Him. He will attend to your needs in a way that is more than your imagination!

Prayer: Dear Father, help me to always remember that You are so great and wonderful.

HIGHER EVERYDAY

THURSDAY JULY 4, 2024

THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD - 2

TEXT: EPHESIANS 6:15-16

MEMORY VERSE: "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (EPHESIANS 6:15).

Part of our armour for defeating Satan is preaching the gospel. Preaching is the means of calling sinners to repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus so that they can know God. Having our feet fitted with the shoes of the gospel of peace allows us to be ready to share the gospel with others at all times.

How is preaching a weapon? Preaching depopulates Satan's kingdom, making him to lose his captives and reduce his power and influence. Remember also that we are commanded to go and preach, and obedience gives us power to overcome temptations and sin.

The fourth piece of armour in this series is the shield of faith. The first three pieces of armour are fixed firmly to the body, but the shield must be taken up to deflect all attacks and fiery darts, which could be sin, sorrow, evil thoughts or imaginations, and afflictions.

Also, you need to have faith in God. Yes, faith in the fire, like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, believing that He is able to protect and deliver at all times.

QUOTE: Also, you need to have faith.

CHALLENGE: Preach the gospel - it's a piece of the armour.

PRAYER: Dear Father, fit my feet with the readiness to preach, in Jesus' name.
