Sin and Its Effects

The fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death
- Revelation 21:8

In our day, we have so minimized sin that we have become almost numb to its pervasive influence in our lives and in our society. Not believing Jesus Christ, worshiping material things, sexual sin, witchcraft, lying and deception... even murder -- these have become so commonplace in our society that we run great risk of thinking that God is just as ambivalent toward our wickedness as we are.

But here, in this end-of-the-world revelation, we are reminded that "hellfire and brimstone" sermons, while not always preached the right way or for the right reasons, certainly have clear foundation in Scripture. No matter how callused we become to personal sin, no matter how well we may be able to justify it to ourselves or others, no matter how much society may condone or excuse it -- God assures us that the end of persistent, unrepentant sin is an everlasting lake of fire.

Our God, we are reminded, is not only love. He is truth (John 4:24), he is light (1 John 1:5), and he is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). If we desire to have fellowship with him, then, we cannot walk in our own way; we must walk in his light (1 John 1:6).

The wonderful news of the gospel is that the Way that we need, the Truth that we need, the Light that we need is all found in the person of Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Do not rest in your sins, but do not trust in your good works, either. Salvation is only found in Jesus.

Sovereignty of God

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world
- Acts 15:18

Perhaps you have known, even recently, the unsettling and sorrowful experience of receiving a phone call, or a doctor's report, or an employer's notice that delivered unexpected and tragic news - "You have cancer." "We're letting you go." "Your loved one has been in an accident." No matter what form these moments take in our particular situation, they always remind us of our personal frailty and inability to control the details of our lives.

The great consolation from God's Word, however, is that God never has such moments. He is never surprised by calamity that befalls us, he is never taken back by sudden tragedy, his plans are never disrupted by the unexpected. In short, he is never at a loss for a solution to any problem... or for the power to implement it... or for the wisdom to make sure it is the right solution.

God knows all his works (and subsequently, obviously, the events those works will be connected with) from the beginning of the world. It is for this reason that God can, and does, give us such rock-solid assurances in the midst of earth-shattering catastrophes. "I will never leave you or forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5); "my grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Corinthians 12:9); "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28); "trying of your faith worketh patience" (James 1:3).

Beloved, in your moments of overwhelming pain, or grief, or disappointment, flee to the God who is never disappointed or surprised, but is touched by the feelings of your infirmities. Rush to him, rest in him, believe in him.
May this week bring *SHALOM* into your life.

Women of Faith

One thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her
- Luke 10:42

One thing is needful. How difficult it is to learn this lesson!

Martha meant well, and so do we oftentimes. There are a thousand things that call for our attention each day. There are obligations to fulfill, schedules to be kept, and people to be pleased. But in the midst of the daily hubbub, whether you are a homemaker or a chief financial officer, do not forget that one thing is needful

A promising career is not needful. The approval of peers is not needful. A well-padded retirement account is not needful. Even the affection of family members is not needful. One thing -- and one thing alone -- is absolutely essential.

What could possibly be that important, in every culture and for every person? Jesus tells us: it was exactly what Mary hath chosen. The one thing that is needful is to sit "at Jesus' feet" and "hear his word" (v.39).

We must make time in the busyness of our daily lives to spend at the feet of Jesus, submitting ourselves to his will and opening our hearts to him in prayer. We must be willing to say "No" to the countless distractions that threaten to pull us away from him throughout the day. We must hear his word, which he has shared and preserved for us in the Bible.

Communion with Jesus Christ is not just part of Christianity, it is Christianity. It is not just part of life, it is the only life that matters. It is the purpose for which you were created and it is the only thing which shall not be taken away from you by disaster or even death.
