📜📜```TEXT:HAGGAI 1:8-11```📜📜

🔑📖```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD" (HAGGAI 1:8).*_

*A few years ago, there was a social media storm surrounding the Christian duty of giving to God. As was to be expected, given the freedom that social media offers, everyone chimed in, and there were many opinions. One idea that seemed to have gained considerable traction was the substituting of giving to God's cause with giving to charitable causes. The protagonists argued for taking care of the pecuniary needs of society's down-and-outers to the total neglect of the Church's ministry of evangelism, which unknown to them, catered for man's spiritual needs and his immortal soul.*

*The idea of having to make a mandatory choice between going hungry and going to hell is not found anywhere in God's word. How could anyone rightly substitute ardent love for God with fervent love for their fellow men, and vice versa? US billionaire John D. Rockefeller, if he were still alive, would have been amused by the absurdity of juxtaposing necessary social action with the spiritual duty of tithing. The American gave to God's house and cared for fellow men with equal passion, both virtues stemming from his understanding of the Christian as a steward.*

*God had sent Prophet Haggai with words of fierce rebuke to the returning captives of Israel. He expected them to reciprocate His favour of granting them restoration back to their homeland, after long years of captivity. One way they were expected to do this was in rebuilding the temple and inaugurating regular worship. Instead, they were keen on reconstructing their own estates while God's house remained desolate and in ruins. No one among them seemed to have noticed the incongruence between their most strenuous efforts at financial sufficiency and the meagre resources they garnered. They were, therefore, in a double jeopardy of spiritual and material destitution, though oblivious of the fact. Concentrating all our energy on material pursuits to the neglect of heaven's demands could bring us to the same fate as Israel's in the days of Haggai.*

*God, however, laced His rebuke with words of encouragement to the returnees. There was hope yet if they repented and did the right thing. Honouring God with your resources opens His treasure-house of blessings into your life.*

*ULTIMATE TRIUMPH*

*📖TEXT:* ZEPHANIAH 2:7-15

*🔑📖 KEY VERSE:* _"The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen" (ZEPHANIAH 2:11)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
In the 19th century, cannibalistic tribes in the Pacific region worshipped cruel gods, offering human sacrifices. When missionary John Hunt arrived, he faced extreme danger. Yet, the chief of the tribe turned to Christ in 1854, renouncing his old gods. Soon, entire villages burned their idols and embraced Christianity, leading to a national revival.

Zephaniah foretold in this passage, that even "the isles of the heathen" would worship God. The specific transformation of the Pacific island proves that no culture is beyond God's reach - He famishes false gods and establishes true worship. Over time, the gospel has faced fierce opposition in many nations and communities in the world. History has, however, recorded that time and time again, beyond the Bible stories like the encounter between Israel's Ark of God and the Philistines' Dagon, Prophet Elijah and the worshippers of Baal, idols and the gods of this world will continue to fall before the Almighty God, to buttress the efficacy of the gospel message.

Israel had suffered cruel persecutions from heathen nations as a result of their continual disobedience to God. They had been made to pass under the rods of the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Medo-Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans. And of late, anti-Semitic sentiments have rocked the world so much with dire consequences. The idolatrous nations have continued to claim their triumph over the elect of God. Some even boast of overrunning the life-saving and everlasting gospel. But God has always proved them wrong as He remains the only true God. His Church has remained firmly built upon the Rock that is Christ, which no gate of hell has neither the audacity nor capacity to conquer.

The people of God must rejoice and march on confidently knowing that God will yet glorify Himself in His faithful and forthright children who will not cave in at the aggression of opposers of their faith in the true and the living God. The enemies of God will bow to the majesty of the Almighty. And in the regeneration, the ferocious biters today will be bitten by the just retribution of the Omnipotent.

*✍️THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:* _Rejoice! The Church militant will be the Church triumphant!_

*TWO SIDES OF GOD*

*📖TEXT:* ROMANS 11:17-32

*🔑📖 KEY VERSE:* _"Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off" (ROMANS 11:22)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
In 1998, Don Moen produced his hit song, God is Good, All the Time which has become a catchphrase for Christians. The goodness of God is emphasised in the Bible. The psalmist says, 'O taste and see that the Lord is good'. 1 Chronicles 16:34 says, "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever". If the goodness and mercies of God endure forever, does this imply that God has no room for discipline and judgment?

He does; therefore in our text, Apostle Paul warned the Gentiles not to take the goodness of God for granted by recalling the calamity that befell the children of Israel. The aim was to discourage them from gloating over Israel and become wise in their own conceits. He said the same fate would befall them if they behaved the same way. The passage today exposes the error in the doctrine of unconditional eternal security.

Today, believers must remember that our security is also conditional. Prosperity preachers emphasise the mercy and goodness of God but hardly warn their congregation of the danger of hell and the imminent judgment of God. The goodness of God may be as high as the heavens, and His love may be as deep as the deepest ocean. His justice demands punishment for those who rebel against His authority and disobey His laws. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness." These are those who forget that, "our God is a consuming fire."

Let us always remember the warning that, "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." The hands that fed the children of Israel with manna in the wilderness also punished them for their iniquities. Therefore, as you enjoy the goodness of God, beware not to incur His wrath. Steer clear of sin.

*✍️THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:* _The justice of God is a coin with two sides: reward and retribution._

*BREVITY OF LIFE*

*📖TEXT:* PSALM 90:1-12

🔑📖KEY VERSE:* _"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (PSALM 90:12)._

*📖MESSAGE*
Charles Spurgeon, the renowned English preacher, described the brevity of human life in five simple words: "It is sown, grown, blown, mown, gone." In a similar light, Moses, the man of God, reflects on the fleeting nature of life in contrast to God's eternal existence. He employs various metaphors to illustrate the transience and mortality of man, emphasising that sin has brought judgment from God upon humanity, thus shortening our days on earth. He then prays for wisdom to make the most of this brief life.

The text reminds us not to squander our limited time on earth. Regardless of how long we may live, our time here is short compared to eternity. We need God's guidance to spend our days wisely and productively. The psalmist's plea for divine assistance in numbering our days resonates with the New Testament's call to redeem the time. To redeem the time means to seize every opportunity and make the best use of our moments.

Those who are aware of the brevity of life will be prompted to repent swiftly, lest they perish in sin and face eternal damnation. Believers, too, should avoid living in secret sin, realising that what is hidden from earthly eyes is fully visible to God. Rather than wasting our days on unproductive pursuits, we should invest them in righteous acts and soul-winning that yield eternal rewards. This psalm invites everyone to reflect soberly on life's temporal nature, a message echoed in F***y Crosby's timeless hymn, _"Be in Time!"_ In the lyrics, she writes:

*✍️THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:* _If life is but a breath, let yours breathe in eternity._

*STUPIDITY OF IDOLATRY*

*📖TEXT:* HABAKKUK 2:13-20

*🔑📖 KEY VERSE:* _"Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it" (HABAKKUK 2:19)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
In many ancient mythologies, gods were often depicted as having human-like qualities, including the need for rest or sleep at night. Some were made of wood and stones that had to be carried from place to place. Tragically, some people, created in God's own image, still worship these idols.

Prophet Habakkuk had much to lament about in the ungodly lifestyle of his fellow Israelites and their Babylonian overlords. Though one nation was in servitude to the other, both were in bo***ge to Satan, as shown by their sinful practices. Two of such practices were drunkenness and idolatry, which betrayed ignorance or rejection of God's standard of holiness. The Babylonians were ignorant of the true God, just as the Athenians, who set up altars to various gods and provided for the Unknown God in Paul's day.

Each individual should take responsibility for his or her misdeeds, without making excuses. Hence, God condemned worship of idols, as well as both the giver and the taker of alcoholic drinks. Drinking intoxicated beverages is a sinful and dangerous form of recreation because it interferes with rational decision-making and causes damage to individual lives, homes and property.

This is why the police will arrest anyone driving under the influence. Such a person is considered careless and reckless and his action or failure to act, could lead to road traffic accidents, often causing death and injuries. If secular authorities are so concerned about the effect of intoxicants on vehicle drivers and operators of machinery, how much more is God concerned about people taking substances that could damage their organs, blur their vision, deaden their conscience and make them prone to temptation.

We should be sober and vigilant. We need also to watch against modern idolatry. Anything we value above God, becomes an idol. An idol can be ourselves, when we place our interests above that of God. Let us start on a new note today, to reject everything idolatrous. We don't have to indulge in alcohol drinking, simply because it is legal in our area. God's command deserves more respect than the indulgence of our worldly systems.

*✍️THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:* _Worship of man-made objects is not just an affront to God, but the height of human folly._

*SATAN'S PLOT; CHRIST'S PRAYER*

*📖TEXT:* LUKE 22:31-34

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: _"And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren" (LUKE 22:31, 32)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
In warfare, a common strategy is to capture or kill key leaders on the enemy's side to gain tactical advantage. The killing of Osama bin Laden was a pivotal moment in modern history, marking the end of the decade-long chase for the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. It also crippled and weakened the influence of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group.

This kind of strategy also applies in spiritual warfare. The devil targets those he considers key leaders and influential disciples of Christ. Recognising Peter's significant position and relevance in God's plan for the Church, he wanted to destroy Peter's faith and abort God's plan for him. However, Jesus knew Satan's plot; thus, He forewarned Peter, reassuring him of His prayers. Rather than heed Christ's warning, Peter began to boast of his love and loyalty to Christ.

Satan's plot against Peter applies to all believers. He constantly desires to take us down. The devil considers every believer a potential threat to him and his kingdom. Therefore, he tries to get the believer out of favour with God and render him weak and useless such that he can no longer pose a threat to him. Satan uses fierce and bitter opposition or subtle temptations to allure the unsuspecting Christian. But we have the comforting assurance that Jesus is praying for us.

However, Christ's intercession for us does not absolve us of the responsibility of staying on guard always. While we are not to become scared of the devil, we cannot afford to be carefree, careless, presumptuous, or self-confident. We must constantly watch and pray. There is no spiritual level we can attain, or how close to God we can be, that will keep us out of the devil's temptations and plot. Satan does not give up on anyone at all. He does not mind waiting as long as it takes to hunt down a believer. We must, therefore, constantly watch and pray. Take to the counsel of Charlotte Elliott, the hymn writer:

"Gird thy heavenly armour on,
Wear it ever night and day;
Ambushed lies the evil one;
Watch and pray."

As long as we keep trusting in the Lord and abide in His words, we can be sure of victory over the devil no matter how long and hard he tries!

*✍️THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:* _Those who keep their watch in prayer will overcome the devil's schemes._

📜📜```TEXT:JONAH 3:6-10```📜📜

🔑📖```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not" (JONAH 3:10).*_

*In his book, Timothy Jennings, a psychiatrist and Christian author, writes of the danger of unrecognised heart conditions: "Hypertension - high blood pressure - has been called the silent killer, but medical professionals didn't always realise this. In fact, some doctors argued that hypertension was a made-up disorder that didn't need to be treated at all". For instance, in 1931 Dr. John J. Hay, a British senior physician proclaimed: "The greatest danger to a man with high blood pressure lies in its discovery, because then some fool is certain to try and reduce it." Tragic results followed from this reckless statement which some experts now argue was taken out of context. Further medical studies later provided better answers that have facilitated the treatment of those conditions.*

*This applies to the way Jonah's fiery preaching of impending judgment upon sinful Nineveh triggered a change of heart after years of impudence and stonewalling. Nineveh was on God's agenda for severe judgment. That was the case, until the reluctant Prophet Jonah, came with his fiery message of doom. Although Jonah did not provide any panacea that could encourage hope in the Ninevites, nonetheless, they heeded the call of their king, who proclaimed a fast to plead for forgiveness. The response of the king was immediate and decisive: he ordered a national dry fast (no food or water) and charged everyone to "cry mightily to God." He understood that conviction must be followed by confession, prayer for pardon and the forsaking of past sins. His rhetorical question of whether God would pardon should be seen as a sinner's acknowledgement of the depth of his depravity and God's absolute prerogative to forgive sins. It was not the fasting that brought God's forgiveness and mercy, but the genuine repentance.*

*Living around the precipice of danger, while holding on to a wrong assumption, can be damnable. So also is the careless attitude of dismissing a serious situation without probing further. God expects the sinner to respond to the gospel message, rather than believing all is well because they do not feel any danger in the present. Very important too is the need for us to preach the word of salvation very clearly, so the world can be acquainted with the danger they face. The impact of the Word is the conviction of hearts as seen in the text. No conversion can take place without the proclaimed gospel, which brings conviction and godly sorrow for sins, confession and turning away from sin to the Saviour.*

*In our current dispensation of grace, sinners should not doubt God's willingness to pardon, if they come in the name of Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for mankind. Neither should they doubt God's readiness to judge sinners who refuse to heed His warnings.*

📜📜```TEXT:MARK 15:27-32```📜📜

🔑📖```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Save thyself, and come down from the cross" (MARK 15:30).*_

*It was around 1941 when N**i brutality was getting to its height that a Polish Franciscan Priest named Maximilian Kolbe became the symbol of sacrificial death for others during _World War II._ The inspiring incident happened in the Auschwitz concentration camp, when he voluntarily took the place of a fellow prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was condemned to die. Kolbe offered his life so that Gajowniczek, a husband and father, could live. This monumental and inspiring act is now tagged: _"The Sacrifice of Maximilian Kolbe (1941)"._*

*Apart from the iconic sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Himself, this relatable story has inspired generations of believers and missionaries to consider nothing too precious to give up in order to rescue people from impending damnation. There have been countless number of missionaries that have paid the supreme price in South America, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Others faced the harshness of the _Iron Curtain_ nations in the Communist era, and confronted other hostile communities in an attempt to share Christ's gospel of redemption.*

*Kolbe's act of selfless love and sacrifice no doubt mirrors the infinitely greater redemptive love of Christ that believers must model. Of course, the narratives in the New Testament and the actual historical event of His passion, agonising prayer at Gethsemane, betrayal by one of His close disciples, His kangaroo court trials, cruel treatment, mocking and eventual crucifixion, only affirm His sacrificial love for mankind.*

*It is said that when Jesus was nailed to the cross, our sin was also nailed there. He was punished so that we will be set free from condemnation. He died so that we can live. As prophetically revealed in the Scripture, Christ paid a high price for our salvation.*

*There are a few lessons we need to take away from this meditation. These include our obligation to reciprocate that sacrifice through our unconditional love for Christ and His sheep; our total submission to His perfect will; our commitment to take the gospel message to others, lest His suffering and death at Calvary be a waste in the lives of those who may perish without hearing and receiving the good news.*
