*BETWEEN JUDGMENT AND MERCY*

*📖TEXT:* JOSHUA 11:10-23

*🔑📖 KEY VERSE:* _"There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle" (JOSHUA 11:19)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
Mercy from God is that vital element that no one can earn, deserve or merit. It is an inalienable deed that underpins God's dealings with fallible humankind, saved or unsaved. When all else fails, God's mercies will never fail.

The Canaanites and other nations in the Promised Land engaged in battle against Joshua and the Israelites without seeking a peace agreement, despite their unfavourable position. In this chapter, Joshua faced a coalition of Canaanite forces, defeating them before turning his attention to the northern region. The city of Hazor was captured and burned, with its spoils taken by the Israelites. Joshua then advanced towards the hills and southern territories, continuing the conflict until the entirety of the land was subdued and allocated to the tribes of Israel. The account raises challenging questions regarding the nature of a loving God permitting such violence, particularly the killing of women and children. This narrative has sparked criticism towards the Scripture, leading to inquiries about the justness of these holy wars and casting doubt on divine benevolence, consequently perplexing many readers.

The text emphasises that the people in the land repeatedly heard about God's actions but chose to resist and did not seek mercy, with the Gibeonites being the only exception, although through deceit. Instead of pursuing peace, they relied on military might, having engaged in idol worship and iniquity for centuries, including horrific sacrifices. Ultimately, God's judgment deemed it necessary to cleanse the land of those viewed as rebels and enemies, as the people were prepared to oppose Him rather than embrace His ways.

No one can fight against God and expect to win. It is an effort in futility when we roll out our battle gear instead of pleading and repenting. God delights in mercy. He's not interested in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn to Him in repentance and live. "As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live..."

*BEYOND HUMAN MEASURE*

*📖TEXT:* MATTHEW 19:27-30

*🔑📖KEY VERSE:* _"And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first." - (MATTHEW 19:29,30)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
Brother Andrew, a humble Dutchman, smuggling Bibles communist countries during the Cold War, risking his life to serve believers behind the Iron Curtain. He didn't seek fame; he faithful just obeyed God's quiet call. That small, faithful beginning grew into Open Doors, a global globa ministry that continues to help persecuted Christians today. Though little known on earth, Andrew is surely honoured in heaven.

His story perfectly illustrates the timeless principle Jesus lays out in today's passage: that all faithful, sacrificial service done for Him, however hidden or risky, will attract heaven's reward. In the text, Apostle Peter poses a question many believers still echo today: "We have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? It is a question laced with hope but also with the subtle implication of comparison with others and transaction with God. Considering the context, Peter's question implies that if we have given up much for God, in contrast to the rich young ruler who didn't, surely we are due a proportionate reward. In His answer, Jesus affirms that sacrifice in His name is never forgotten. Certainly, we shall receive astounding rewards, yet He closes with a warning wrapped in a paradox: "But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first."

This final line holds the key to understanding divine reward, not as a salary earned but as a gift bestowed in Sovereign wisdom. God's kingdom does not run on human logic or worldly meritocracy. Instead, it operates based on grace, faithfulness, and sincerity of heart. When we serve God with a mere transactional mind-set, doing in order to receive, we risk missing the heartbeat of discipleship. And to correct this misunderstanding, Jesus immediately follows His statement with the parable of the workers in the vineyard. There, those who worked a full day were shocked to receive the same wages as those hired last. Then Jesus concluded with the same warning: "So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen". The point is clear: God's rewards are not based on length of service or human measure, but on His gracious prerogative. Faithfulness, not fame, draws heaven's attention.

This ought to challenge and comfort us. We are not in competition in God's kingdom. We are simply called to be faithful. Whatever the sacrifice our calling may demand, the measure of our reward is not in the scope of our task but in our fidelity to it. So, as the "prize-giving day" draws near, let us serve with joy, not calculation, remembering that the One who called us is no man's debtor but a just and faithful Rewarder.

*📖MESSAGE:*
Kofi Annan, the Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, is a figure whose life was shaped by the responsibilities of dual citizenship. While Annan was a Ghanaian citizen by birth, his role in international diplomacy required him to balance his connection to his homeland with his responsibility to the global community. In his role in Ghana, he worked to advance the nation's standing on the world stage, often advocating for African issues and the continent's development in the international arena. On the other hand, his global duty as UN Secretary-General involved diplomacy with countries in conflict, addressing human rights abuses, and working toward general global peace.

In the passage, the Pharisees, who were trying to trap Jesus, posed a question about paying taxes to Caesar. The dilemma they presented seemed unsolvable: if Jesus said it was lawful to pay tax, He could alienate the people, who hated Roman rule. But if He said it was unlawful, He could be accused of stirring insurrection. But Jesus, with His wisdom, cut through the manipulation and answered in a way that transcended their trap. He asked for a coin, a denarius, and asked whose image was on it. Then, He gave a profound answer that has echoed through history: "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Jesus' words highlight that we are citizens of two realms - an earthly kingdom and God's kingdom. While on earth, we are to honour the systems of authority set before us, paying taxes, respecting laws, and fulfilling our civic duties, which are part of our witness to the world. On the other hand, we must always remember that we are made in the likeness of God and, as such, our lives, our very being, are His. In all, while our lives may be marked by the needs of the world - job, family, relationships - our ultimate allegiance should lie with God.

THURSDAY 20TH AUGUST, 2026

UNDERESTIMATING SIN'S DEADLINESS

📜📜TEXT: JOSHUA 7:1-6📜📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads" (JOSHUA 7:6).

When COVID-19 ran rampant early in 2020, no one could imagine that it would, under twenty-four months, send more than 7.5 million souls to an unprepared eternity while casualties from related causes would be close to 15 million. In its trail were socioeconomic disasters, unemployment, poverty, depression and pervasive su***de. The root cause of the high mortality was the earlier attempts to cover its tracks. An even more dangerous disease - sin - is on the sprawl in our world. It, too, is impossible to keep under wraps because many people do not recognise its deadliness.

Our text unfolds the folly and tragic story of Achan, his sin and the consequences. Against God's command, he had taken some of the spoils from Jericho. And worse was his attempt to cover up the sin by hiding the stolen spoil under the earth in his tent. The consequence of this was the humiliating, ignominious defeat of Israel at Ai, the death of thirty-six valiant men, and the sombre, ominous shadow of failure cast over the camp of God's chosen people. This disaster in battle, on the path of Joshua, led to humiliation, self-examination, prayer and faith, and finally to victory.

Joshua embarked on an awfully painful search and recovery. This is the gist of our text. The magnified leader is now mortified, but he refrained from maligning God. Self-emptied, self-humiliated and broken, Joshua's primary concerns were twofold: loss of innocent Israelites and the tender regard for the honour of God's name. He wailed: "O Lord, what will thou do unto thy great name?" He conceded both justice and wisdom to God. Neither did he blame the spies he sent out for furnishing the nation with supposedly inaccurate security reports. Nor did he castigate the soldiers who were defeated in battle for cowardice. Joshua did not underestimate the deadliness of sin. He wisely resorted to the only window left, namely, mercy, as a solution to the present crisis.

The only option you have when ensnared in sin is a broken and contrite heart. Confession of sins, self-examination, and genuine repentance void of any excuse or alibi, coupled with a commitment to do restitution wherever it is needful, are the indispensable steps to be saved or restored to fellowship and favour with the Lord.

WEDNESDAY 19TH AUGUST, 2026

ENDURING RECONCILIATION

📜📜TEXT: GENESIS 33:5-15📜📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant" (GENESIS 33:5).

After the horrific genocide in 1994, Rwanda focused heavily on national reconciliation. The Gacaca Courts, a system of community-based justice, allowed perpetrators of the genocide to confess their crimes and ask for forgiveness, while victims could voice their suffering. The emphasis on unity and a shared vision for rebuilding the country contributed to Rwanda's remarkable recovery and the avoidance of further ethnic conflict. Although there are ongoing challenges, the national narrative of "unity and reconciliation" has continued to play a central role in Rwanda's politics and society.

Jacob had lived for years under the shadow of a broken relationship with his brother, Esau. Their past was filled with deceit, betrayal, and conflict. Having stolen Esau's birth right and blessing, the resultant rift was so deep that Esau had vowed to kill Jacob. After years of separation, Jacob now had to face Esau, but with trepidation and fear of retribution. However, what ensued was a stunning picture of grace and a lasting reconciliation, with no record of relapse into hostilities.

Their reconciliation must have been mutual. That "... Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept" showed his willingness to forgive Jacob and let go of his anger and bitterness, and the pain of the past - a rare display of grace. On the other hand, Jacob exemplifies a posture of humility. His bowing before Esau, offering gifts of homage, and acknowledging his wrongs demonstrate the humility required for true reconciliation.

We are called to the same grace and reconciliation that Jacob and Esau experienced. Perhaps there are areas where we need to humble ourselves and seek forgiveness. We are called to extend grace, even when the hurt is deep.

*DOUSING DESPONDENCY*

*📖TEXT:* PSALM 42:1-5

*🔑📖KEY VERSE:* _"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance." - (PSALM 42:5)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
As German bombs fell on England during World War II, the situation became desperate. Hearts were filled with discouragement and thoughts of defeat. Then Winston Churchill's voice echoed over the radio. It inspired the nation and boosted morale among a people on the verge of giving up. On a spiritual level, believers find hope in God too, as they hear the voice that resonates through the pages of His Word. In moments of discouragement, Christians serve as a testimony to those who have never met God or heard His voice.

David exemplifies this in our devotional text as he expresses acute hunger and "thirst for God, the living God". In his hopelessness, he recalled the exhilarating moments he had in God's house and presence. Reminiscences of the voice of joy and praise, filled and blessed by the testimonies of God's faithfulness and the certainty that flows from trust in God, he gladly addresses his soul and jerks back from the abyss of despondency.

Are you troubled about any ugly situation or setback? Cheer up and look up! Here are gems and clues for you as a Christian pilgrim, who could, at times, be discouraged and cast down. David didn't. He queried and counselled his soul. First is to know that neither discouragement nor despondency is a sign of weakness. Elijah is one biblical character who fits this description. After defeating the prophets of Baal, he received a death threat from Jezebel. His hope was shattered, and his despondency set in. He wanted to die! The Lord did not rebuke him for his feelings but sent an angel to provide for his physical needs. In our times of discouragement, su***de is no option; it only leads to a more serious, endless and interminable suffering in hell. The present challenge or problem has not diminished God's love for us. He desires to lead us to a place of a renewed vision of His power!

The time to exit the discouragement mode is now! Take the verifiable steps that effectively log you out, which include a deep, interminable longing for God. This is what Isaiah calls "waiting upon the Lord". Second, you will do well to consciously recall and delight in God's past acts of mercy, divine interventions, and faithfulness. Finally, you must deliberately seek the remedy of praise to uplift your downcast, crestfallen, and discouraged heart. Beloved, don't give in to despair! God will certainly lead you in paths of love, light and joy, where you will find new hope.

MONDAY 17TH AUGUST, 2026

HIS NAME JESUS

📜📜TEXT: MATTHEW 1:18-25📜📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins" (MATTHEW 1:21).

In Scripture, names aren't just labels - they are declarations of identity, destiny, and divine calling. In several cases, God revealed His plans by changing someone's name: Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Jacob became Israel, and Simon became Peter. What we are called often reflects what we are becoming in God's hands.

The angel that announced the birth of Christ declared, "...and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins", denoting His mission on earth. Matthew's account of the event begins and ends with the miraculous - the conception of the Virgin Mary, the angelic visitation, and the disposition of Joseph. All these point to the uniqueness and supremacy of Christ. It is this colossal event that explains Paul's assertive thought in his epistle to the Colossians, "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily".

It should be noted here that even though we don't have to pry into the mysteries of Christ's incarnation, that event was a necessary condition for the redemption of humanity. Notice also that God chose to use a devout virgin who was espoused to Joseph, a religious, good man. It was therefore easy for God's angel to convince them and extract compliance with the divine plan. The whole of these events accorded with prophecies given much earlier than the time. The birth of Jesus is the vehicle of joy into troubled, sin-sick and suffering hearts. His Name portends His mission, ministry and mandate. He is Emmanuel (God with us), and Jesus (Saviour). A few decades later, Peter would affirmatively declare before the Sanhedrin that "...There is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). The Jewish world had long awaited the Messiah with bated breath but, and sadly so, the greater part of the population could not come to terms with the God-incarnate Saviour cradled in the manger surrounded with bleating sheep. That could not stop God's redemptive plan.

Whatever you make of this narrative, it must not be lost on you that Jesus came to save humankind from the grip of sin and its consequences. This also goes with freedom from demonic manipulations and satanic oppression, sickness and destiny-destruction. The question is, has the purpose of Christ's incarnation been fulfilled in your life? If not, why not?

SATURDAY 15TH AUGUST, 2026

QUEST FOR REVIVAL

📜📜TEXT: HABAKKUK 3:1-2📜📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy" (HABAKKUK 3:2).

Reviewing the history of revivals in Christendom, English author and theologian, Os Guinness, states that these spontaneous supernatural acts occur during turbulent times. Examining the periods of the Christian Reformation, Revival, and Renaissance, he concludes that the darkest hour is often just before the dawn. Consequently, we should always be people of hope and prayer rather than gloom and defeatism. God can turn the situation around in a moment.

The cleric took lessons from the experience of Habakkuk, the prophet who was struck with terror on learning from the Lord that the land of Judah would be attacked by the fierce Chaldean troops from Babylon. Already disturbed by the iniquities of injustice and impunity around him, on which he expected the Lord to act, Habakkuk was now informed that more disquietude was on the way. The prophet was made to understand that even the Chaldeans, who were to be used as an instrument of punishment, were themselves to face the wrath of God for their wickedness. His anxiety was relieved when he realised that the God of mercy he served was at the point of reviving His people in the process. He went on to intercede for precisely that.

With humanity now also traumatised by sporadic assaults coming through technological inventions like Artificial Intelligence (AI), wars, insecurity, dysfunctional governance, threats of nuclear conflagration, there are fears that man is on the brink, looking into the bottomless abyss. Really? Not so. The Christian is challenged, rather, like Habakkuk, to plead for revival among the turmoil. It is the hour to ask for an unprecedented move of God's Spirit in the world, an event that should usher multitudes to repentance and turning to Christ for succour in trying times.

The Lord's second coming is imminent, going by the signs we are witnessing. It is a timely call for vigilant heaven-seeking Christians to strengthen their commitment to holiness, evangelism, study of God's word, fellowship, and acts of kindness. We shouldn't be despondent as we observe the events that signal the end-time; instead, we should discern revival on the horizon.

*UNITED IN PRAYER*

*📖TEXT:* ACTS 1:12-14

*🔑📖 KEY VERSE:* _"These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren" (ACTS 1:14)._

*📖MESSAGE:*
In 2010, 33 miners were trapped underground for 69 days in a collapsed mine in Chile. As the world watched, the miners did something remarkable: they prayed together, uniting in faith despite their dire situation. Their shared prayers provided strength, hope, and a sense of solidarity that helped them endure the darkness until rescue came. A team united in prayer to God will always receive divine intervention.

In our text, we see a small yet significant gathering of believers returning to Jerusalem after Jesus' ascension. Among them were the eleven remaining apostles, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and His brothers. Together, they entered an upper room and devoted themselves to prayer, waiting for the fulfilment of Jesus' promise, the coming of the Holy Spirit. The narrative paints a vivid picture of unity, perseverance, and expectation. These were not people idly passing the time or withdrawing in fear. They were engaged in fervent, collective prayer, clinging to their faith and to each other as they awaited God's next move. In a time of uncertainty and transition, prayer became their anchor. This moment of unified devotion was pivotal, setting the stage for the transformative event that would follow, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

True Christians must recognise the awesome power and possibilities inherent in unified prayer, especially during the times of waiting, uncertainty, or challenge. The present world around us is becoming increasingly fragmented, where many live individualistic lives, thus neglecting genuine joint efforts in prayer and communion with God. We are today, once again, reminded of the strength that comes from praying together in one accord as believers. Whether in families, small groups or churches, corporate prayer has the power to deepen faith, foster unity, and prepare hearts for God's work.

When we face spiritual, social, and personal challenges, the example of those early Christians offers a challenge: to come together, set aside differences, and seek God with one mind and heart. How powerful the church will be today if its members all unite in prayers unto the God of possibilities.

THURSDAY 13TH AUGUST, 2026

SHORT SHELF-LIFE OF PAIN

📜📜TEXT: REVELATION 21:1-8📜📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (REVELATION 21:4).

John Harper, a Scottish Baptist pastor and evangelist, died on the RMS Titanic in 1912. His last words, as testified by survivors, were "I have seen heaven, and it is beautiful" and "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." Despite his death, Harper used his final moments to preach the gospel, expressing his deep assurance that beyond death lay a place of eternal peace. A rescued survivor testified that Harper, clinging to the wreckage, asked if he was saved and urged him to believe in Jesus Christ. The survivor later accepted Christ and called himself "the last convert of John Harper."

Today's passage paints a breath-taking vision of the new heaven and new earth. John sees the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descending from God, adorned like a bride. A powerful voice declares that God will dwell among His people, wiping away every tear. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will be gone forever. The former things will pass away, and everything will be made new. God, the Alpha and Omega, promises the water of life to those who thirst. But He also warns that those who reject Him (those living in sin, fear, unbelief) will face eternal separation in the lake of fire.

In this world, we experience suffering in many forms such as loss, illness, disappointment, pain and injustice. But for those who belong to Christ, these trials are temporary. Christ assures us that a glorious future awaits us, one where God Himself will comfort us, and all suffering will cease. This hope should encourage believers to endure hardships with faith, knowing that one day, we will step into a place where joy is endless and pain is no more. It also calls us to live righteously, rejecting sin and embracing the promise of eternity with God.
