*HOW DID GOD FORGIVE SINS? (1)*

*Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.*

Luke 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

Observe Jesus’ words in Matthew 26 above.

“…my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

In understanding his communication here, we will do a bit of study on the writings of the writer of Hebrews.

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

The writer of Hebrews therefore points our attention to the practice of shedding of blood under the Old Testament dispensation. It was a practice under the law regarded as “the day of atonement” where the High Priest applied blood (of animals) for himself and for the sins of the entire nation of Israel, in the Holiest of all and upon the Mercy Seat which was situated behind the veil (Leviticus 16:1-34).

Important facts about the Day of Atonement:
• The Day of atonement was when the shedding of blood was done every year to atone for the sins of the children of Israel (Leviticus 16:34)
There were two goats (one upon which the Lord’s lot fell and the other referred to as the goat of escape) used in the practice of the Day of atonement (Leviticus16:8-10)
• The first was to be killed and the blood taken into the Holiest of all, behind the veil
• The blood was applied on the Mercy seat by only the High Priest (Leviticus 16:14-15)
• The other was to be separated, taken into the wilderness (Leviticus 16:10)
• The blood actually typified the life of the animal (Leviticus 17:1)

The epistles however, teach that Jesus has become the reality
(essence) of all the practices under the law (Colossians 2:16-17). The Day of Atonement of all the practices under the law, was to foreshadow the redemptive work of Jesus with emphasis with events from the cross to the throne (Hebrews 9:12-23, Hebrews 10:1-21).

There were other symbolic references to the Day of Atonement. For instance, the Old Covenant the High Priest was chosen from the tribe of Levi (Hebrews 7:5).

However, today Jesus has become the High Priest of the new covenant having risen from the dead (Hebrews 7:11, Hebrews 7:16, Hebrews 7:22).

There was also the significance of the blood which was shed.

Under the Old Covenant, blood was shed yearly yet it could not take away sins (Leviticus 16:34, Hebrews 10:1-3). The blood of Jesus made available a perfect sacrifice (once and for all) and it did not just take away sins but cleansed our heart from an evil conscience (Hebrews 10:11-14, Hebrews 10:17-22).

This blood was not offered on earth but it typified the offering of his life in Heaven to God (Hebrews 9:21-24; Hebrews 10:12).

Today, having offered a perfect sacrifice for sins, he is seated at the right hand of God; the position of Authority (Hebrews 10:12, Hebrews 4:14).

Hence,
• Jesus’ offering has taken away sins forever;
• It is based on this that a man is forgiven once and for all (it is eternal in nature);
• When a man believes and receives the gospel, he has received forgiveness and remission of sins eternally;
• The believer therefore is the man forever forgiven;
• Sin no longer stands between the believer and God anymore.

*CONFESSION: The blood of Jesus has paid the price for sins; I have received forgiveness of sins eternally! (Forever)*

*FORGIVENESS OF SINS AS TAUGHT IN THE EPISTLES*

Recall that we began by looking at the emphasis of the emphasis whilst teaching the subject of forgiveness. We will therefore see further that, from the epistles, the basis for forgiveness of sins is hinged majorly on the sacrifice/blood of Jesus.

Let us observe the following texts;

 Romans 4:7-8
 2nd Corinthians 5:17-21

Unlike the Old Testament where the man makes steps of reconciliation, here God is the one making the reconciliation through Jesus.

2nd Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

This implies that, God is not charging them for any sin.

 Ephesians 1:7
 Ephesians 4:32
 Colossians 1:7
 Colossians 2:13

Hence, the forgiveness of sins is now tied to the blood of Jesus, thereby explaining God’s love and nature demonstrated in Christ. By so doing;

 There is no condition attached or prerequisite demanded
 God has forgiven (a past tense act)
 The believer therefore has forgiveness of sins as a
present day reality

Hebrews 10:10-12

1st John 2:1 My little children,these things
write unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Vs 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

The word “propitiation” implies sacrifice to take away sins.

Jesus is therefore the sacrifice to take away sins.

John also makes a fundamental point in 1st John 1:7 where he identifies that the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Observe that the only scriptural reference in the epistles that appears to differ from what we have examined is the 1st John 1:9 text, which will be explained subsequently in this study.

Having seen that, we can now make a clear distinction between the dispensations;

 Old Testament: Under this dispensation, there were certain conditions to be met before a man’s sins could be forgiven

(Leviticus 18:8-21, Hebrews 8:9, Hebrews 10:1-4)

 New Testament: Under this dispensation, God has forgiven based on the sacrifice of Jesus for sins. Hence forgiveness and remission (which explains what God has done) is to be preached, believed upon and received (Hebrews 8:10-13, Hebrews 9:11-19, Matthew 26:28, 2nd Corinthians 5:21)

In summary therefore, under the law, man made the reconciliation.

But under the New Testament dispensation, God made the reconciliation through Jesus Christ.

CONFESSION: I have been reconciled to God through Christ; I’m forever grateful for the sacrifice of Jesus for sins!

SUNDAY* JANUARY 4, 2026*

*FORGIVENESS OF SINS UNDER THE SYNOPTIC (Four) GOSPELS*

*The Synoptic (Four) Gospels*

*At this time, the law was still in force which is why there is a similarity between the conditions for forgiveness under the Synoptic Gospels and the Law. Until Jesus shed His blood, the New Testament wasn’t in force.*

i) Mark 11:25-26

ii) Matthew 6:12-15 (it is from here we get the “Lord’s Prayer”).

Here, we see “…forgive us our sins…” That would mean to pray to God to forgive your sins, thereby agreeing with what we see in the law.

Note that: Just like the Old Testament, conditions were given to receive forgiveness under this dispensation.

 ‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us’

 ‘forgive so that your father in heaven will forgive you’

Jesus could tell them to pray in this manner because the Law was still in force at this time and thus, Jesus ministered under the Law (Galatians 4:3-4).

Furthermore; Matthew 3:5
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
Vs 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

John was a prophet of the Old Testament and was not described as a prophet of the Kingdom.

Matthew 11:11
Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Vs 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
Vs 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

John was the last and the greatest prophet of the Old Testament.

Mark 1:4
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Vs 5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

On the contrary, Jesus who was anointed of the Holy Spirit (Acts
10:38, Luke 4:18) talked about forgiveness of sins and never once mentioned confessing sins, was in the same dispensation.

John 8:3-11

Observe John recorded that Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more”.

What comes before the change of ways? No condemnation and this is the gift that comes through Jesus, then a change of ways.

Jesus recognized the woman in the John 8 scenario sinned, but He was not holding her guilty for it.

John 3:16-18. Note therefore that nobody is sent to hell because of sins, people go to hell because they do not believe that Jesus paid for their sins.

Matthew 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Further references: (Mark 2:10, Luke 5:21).

That said, we see that Jesus forgave sins as different from what John preached. Jesus was not under the Law, he was the reality of the law; its fulfilment (Matthew 5:17).

He gave forgiveness unconditionally. Clearly seen, John
preached forgiveness based on confession and repentance, Jesus gave forgiveness unconditionally.

*CONFESSION: In Christ is the fulfillment of the law; I am a product of the work of Christ; I have received forgiveness of sins unconditionally*

*FORGIVENESS OF SINS BEFORE & UNDER THE LAW*

*Before the Law (GENESIS)*

*Genesis 6:7: And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.*

Note: there was nothing specific that they did! Yet, they were sinners.

Why?

Romans 5:12-13
Sin was in the world (Verse 12), however it wasn’t imputed because there was no law (Vs 13).

There was no law to say this is what they did but they were sinners.

Genesis 18:17-26

Genesis 18:17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Vs 18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Vs 19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Vs 20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of S***m and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

Note: Again even at this point we can’t find a basis like that.
However from Abraham’s conversation with God, observe
verse 26

Genesis 18:26 And the LORD said, If I find in S***m fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

“Righteous” here would mean those that have a standing with God.

Abraham is talking to God because he is righteous. There was a basis for this, which is what Genesis 15:6 explains as “Abraham believed God.”

We find Abel who was before Abraham and was also said to be righteous.

(Genesis 4, Hebrews 11:3-4)...he offered a sacrifice to God for his sins. This shows that he believed in what God told him.

So, a man righteous in S***m and Gomorrah will be people, who will offer sacrifices for their sins before God, they will believe they can’t be justified by themselves but by an offering.

So, being righteous was not a function of not doing wrong but of people who stood in faith believing the word of God.

Hence, on that basis, they won’t be destroyed. This is a pointer to how God will forgive sins but it isn’t clear in Genesis because sin isn’t charged to their account so it is difficult to see what they were offering the sacrifices for.

*Under the Law (OLD TESTAMENT)*

This began in Exodus. There was no testament in the book of Genesis though it was written under that dispensation but not as an Old Testament text. It was in Exodus that the law was given (Exodus 12, Exodus 13, Hebrews 8:6-13)

So, let’s see how sins were forgiven when the law was given;

i. Leviticus 4-6, Exodus 32:30-34
ii. Leviticus 19:20-22
iii. Numbers 15:22-28
iv. Deuteronomy 29:18-20
v. 2nd Chronicles 6:21-38
vi. 2nd Chronicles 7:14-21
vii. Isaiah 1:18-19

Observe that:

In this dispensation, conditions were given to receive forgiveness of sins

 an offering was to be brought;
 Sacrifice was to be made;
 Sins were to be confessed;
 They were to turn; pray; then God would hear from
heaven;
 There was a demand for obedience.

In other words, people had to do something prior to receiving God’s forgiveness. But it is important to note that before the law, this was not so. There was no condition for forgiveness.

CONFESSION: I appreciate the truth of God’s Word under the Old Testament Dispensation and I understand the significance of events written aforetime!

*YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVING YOU (2)*

*THE BASIS FOR FORGIVENESS IS SIN*

The primary reason for which the subject of forgiveness is examined from scriptures is in relation to sin.

Paul, an Apostle while addressing the Church in Rome stated in Romans 3.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

The word “sin” was translated from a word that implies to miss the mark; to fall short.

Sin is taught in Scriptures as being primarily against God

(Psalm 51:1-4). If for instance, an employee lies to his employer, it is said that he has done wrong in his relationship with his employer. He has committed a trespass specifically against his employer.

Hence, it is God that judges sin; no human being can rightfully do so (Genesis 18:25, Hebrews 12:23).

However it is vital to note that sin is not a creation of God but entered into the world due to Adam’s disobedience (Romans 5:12-19).

Hence, we need to understand this;

Why Does God forgive Sins?

Romans 5:12: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Vs 13: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Vs 14: Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

From; verse 13, Paul states that...until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. So we see that sin was in the world before the law was given but was not charged to men’s account since there was no law to transgress.

This enables us identify that there was a period when there was no law. Hence in the scriptures; we will see different dispensations namely

 Before the law (Genesis)
 During the law (Exodus 13-Malachi)
 The Synoptic gospels (Matthew-John) and;
 The Epistles

The believer ought to note that;

IN BIBLE STUDY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW TIMES WHERE THINGS WERE IN FORCE AND WHEN THEY CEASED TO BE IN FORCE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHY SUCH MUST HAVE HAPPENED.

We can deliberately embark on a careful study on forgiveness of sins under each one of the dispensations listed above.

CONFESSION: I give myself to the study of God’s Word; I pay attention to details and receive insight as I do!

*THURSDAY JANUARY 01, 2025

*YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN YOU, FORGIVENESS OF SINS.*

The word “forgiveness” is an English word and thus used in routine human communication. Hence, it has become easier to adopt the meaning of the word in English lexicon whilst examining the subject of forgiveness from the Bible.

The believer must place premium on the credibility of the written word thereby allowing it interpret itself. There are a number of misconceptions surrounding the subject of forgiveness, which is the reason a good number have grown up to assume that there is a prayer we pray to God where He forgives us only when we pray. It will help our understanding when we find out why, how and when God forgives.

The word “forgiveness” from the original languages implies to send away and this will be explained progressively.

Observe that the subject of forgiveness is largely explained from the epistles; letters to the churches. These letters emphasize what the believer has in relation to “what God has wrought in Christ for us.”

This forms the basis for which the epistles focus more on terms of identification of the believer with Christ. Paul therefore wrote in his letter to the Church in Ephesus;

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

Observe the phrase “spiritual blessings in heavenly places”, where according to the King James Version of the Bible, the word “places” is italicized. The implication is that the word “places” was imputed or added by the translators. In other words, we can render Ephesians 1:3 as “spiritual blessings in heavenly in Christ”.

The word spiritual was translated from a Greek word that implies things of, or that pertain to the spirit.

The word blessings was translated from a Greek word which does not imply anything material but rather implies “fine speaking” or “to speak well of”. The word “heavenly” was translated from a word that implies that which is not earthly or ephemeral.

Hence, Paul in proceeding verses identifies the blessings the believer has in Christ:

 Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

 Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

 Ephesians 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

 Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

 Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

 Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

 Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Observe that forgiveness is taught in the past tense here (verse 7) and same goes with all that Paul writes about the believer.

Thus, from Ephesians 1, we see a common feature in what Paul explained to believers; making reference to a past tense act that was wrought in Christ. This explains who the believer is identified as today.

Hence, forgiveness is taught as a work of Grace that is, it comes undeserving and unconditionally and by the blood of Jesus.

This is the basis upon which the believer must understand the subject of forgiveness as seen in the light of the epistles.

*CONFESSION:*
*I uphold the credibility of the written word; I reckon with what God has wrought in Christ for me!*

*THANKSGIVING - 6*

*Two of Jesus' most notable miracles were done amidst thanksgiving despite the untoward situations.*

John 6:11
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

The miracle of supply even when there was lack. He gave thanks with the few.

John 11:41
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

At Lazarus’s tomb, after 4 days, he gave thanks for the blessing of fellowship.

There are wrong reasons for thanksgiving and there is a funny statement we often make as believers “when praises go up, blessings come down”

No New Testament scripture supports this, as thanksgiving is not a precondition for God’s blessings rather it’s our ceaseless attitude to our Father’s unconditional blessings.

2nd Corinthians 2:14
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

2nd Corinthians 9:15
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Colossians 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

1st Thessalonians 5:18
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Giving thanks is not a gift to God for blessings but a response to his blessings. No bribery intended.

*Confession:*
*I am a child of God and God is my Father. Thanksgiving is an attitude of the kingdom. I am thankful and I rejoice!!! For all the Father’s unconditional blessings are mine.Hallelujah!*

*THANKSGIVING - 5*

*Paul in over 10 instances in the epistle, to the church in Philippi instructs to rejoice! Rather than Murmur and Grumble…*

Yes, despite and in spite.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice…

Vs 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

We can't pray, trust God and His power and still grumble, despising His blessings. The Christ life plants contentment in us .

1st Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain…

Vs 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

Contented means "the circumstances do not dictate our conduct or character" We give thanks, we rejoice. We are yet blessed, despite what we don't have yet

1st Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

We aren't to give thanks FOR all things but IN all things. Notice this verse comes after prayer, we pray and give thanks in all things Paul practised this.

Acts 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

Midnight hour aren't good times. You’ve probably lost a job, got rising debts, creditors getting awry, things getting worse even as you are encouraging others. Yet, you can't murmur, there are blessings to count and be thankful for even as you expect more.

Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises. No room to murmur and give Satan room to wreck more havoc.

*Confession:*
*I give thanks for all the blessings I have in Christ and all the good things I have received of the Lord. I refuse murmurings and instead focus on God’s power working on my behalf.*

*THANKSGIVING - 4*

*Life means opportunity; another chance, it means salvation is possible, miracles are possible, fellowship is available ..., only life guarantees these.*

A thankful heart knows this. In the cold realities of life can emerge complexities.

Whilst some are seeking fruit of the womb, others the challenge they have are their kids. Some are in need of a wife, for some others, that's exactly what their problem is; their wife is all the trouble they have. It goes on and on …

The murmurer doesn't think deeply. He grumbles at life's challenges, he "curses" life without saying it. He despises God's greatest blessing.

1st Corinthians 10:10
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

The thankful do not murmur.

Philippians 2:14
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Vs 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

*Confession:*
*I refuse murmurings, I count my blessings and I am thankful for all I am in Christ.*
