*HOW DID GOD FORGIVE SINS? (1)*
*Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.*
Luke 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Observe Jesus’ words in Matthew 26 above.
“…my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
In understanding his communication here, we will do a bit of study on the writings of the writer of Hebrews.
Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
The writer of Hebrews therefore points our attention to the practice of shedding of blood under the Old Testament dispensation. It was a practice under the law regarded as “the day of atonement” where the High Priest applied blood (of animals) for himself and for the sins of the entire nation of Israel, in the Holiest of all and upon the Mercy Seat which was situated behind the veil (Leviticus 16:1-34).
Important facts about the Day of Atonement:
• The Day of atonement was when the shedding of blood was done every year to atone for the sins of the children of Israel (Leviticus 16:34)
There were two goats (one upon which the Lord’s lot fell and the other referred to as the goat of escape) used in the practice of the Day of atonement (Leviticus16:8-10)
• The first was to be killed and the blood taken into the Holiest of all, behind the veil
• The blood was applied on the Mercy seat by only the High Priest (Leviticus 16:14-15)
• The other was to be separated, taken into the wilderness (Leviticus 16:10)
• The blood actually typified the life of the animal (Leviticus 17:1)
The epistles however, teach that Jesus has become the reality
(essence) of all the practices under the law (Colossians 2:16-17). The Day of Atonement of all the practices under the law, was to foreshadow the redemptive work of Jesus with emphasis with events from the cross to the throne (Hebrews 9:12-23, Hebrews 10:1-21).
There were other symbolic references to the Day of Atonement. For instance, the Old Covenant the High Priest was chosen from the tribe of Levi (Hebrews 7:5).
However, today Jesus has become the High Priest of the new covenant having risen from the dead (Hebrews 7:11, Hebrews 7:16, Hebrews 7:22).
There was also the significance of the blood which was shed.
Under the Old Covenant, blood was shed yearly yet it could not take away sins (Leviticus 16:34, Hebrews 10:1-3). The blood of Jesus made available a perfect sacrifice (once and for all) and it did not just take away sins but cleansed our heart from an evil conscience (Hebrews 10:11-14, Hebrews 10:17-22).
This blood was not offered on earth but it typified the offering of his life in Heaven to God (Hebrews 9:21-24; Hebrews 10:12).
Today, having offered a perfect sacrifice for sins, he is seated at the right hand of God; the position of Authority (Hebrews 10:12, Hebrews 4:14).
Hence,
• Jesus’ offering has taken away sins forever;
• It is based on this that a man is forgiven once and for all (it is eternal in nature);
• When a man believes and receives the gospel, he has received forgiveness and remission of sins eternally;
• The believer therefore is the man forever forgiven;
• Sin no longer stands between the believer and God anymore.
*CONFESSION: The blood of Jesus has paid the price for sins; I have received forgiveness of sins eternally! (Forever)*
