This Society, which was for many years the seat of administration of the Volta Wesleyan Mission now Methodist Circuit, was founded by the late Emmanuel Osabutey Aguedze, the late Joseph Tetteh Portuphy and the late Joseph Dornoo Hushie. Ernest Bruce in 1891 from Prampram his abode. He was later transferred to Kpong to Shepherd the little flocks of ardent members who were showing signs of spiritual
growth. He started by opening a school to train the children of members in academic pursuits and in principles of godliness. The year 1897 was the appointment of the first-catechist. Reuben Sackey to Kpong. He was succeeded by Mr. Addo, who later became a Methodist Minister. In 1904 Revd. Ernest Bruce was transferred and Reved. Addo, a past teacher- catechist, came to succeed him. By this time the church had branches at Big Ada, Ada Foah, Akuse, Adjina and Peki and the name Volta Mission circuit was assumed. It is fitting to note in passing that the late Jacob Sey and the late Easmond Dwira, both of Cape Coast, donated respectively ¢100(old currency) and guineas towards the construction of the Plange’s Memorial Chapel at Kpong. In 1909 Revd. Maclean Bruce succeeded Revd. Addo whio left on transfer. The former’s administration lasted for only three years, but the spiritual growth of the Church was outstanding and marvelous. It was a time when the members of them offered to be Evangelist, Local Preachers and Church Leaders of great fame. Revd. Mensah came to succeed Revd. Maclean in the year 1912. His tour lasted until the year 1918. During his regime Aveyime, Duffor, Osuduku and Battor were added to the circuit. Martin Luther Portuphy took over the reins of administration in 1918 on transfer from Nsawam Circuit. It was under Revd. Portuphy that Awudome Societies, such as, Tsito, Anyirawase, Avenui, Akrofu, and Kissiflui became more alive. And in the Upper-Krobo area Bisa, Bukunor, Anyaboni and Apekisu were added to the sub-stations. In 1921 Kpong was for the second time, inundated by the Volta River causing worse havoc and ruins than the 1917 flood. Buildings and personal effects were destroyed and the inhabitants including church members were rendered impoverished. In the same year Revd. M. L. Portuphy was transferred and he was succeeded by two Ministers, the first time in the history of the Volta Circuit in the persons of Revd. Addo Circuit Superintendent stationed at Kpong, and Revd. E. Allotey- Pappoe assistant Minister stationed at Peki. The latter’s appointment there was a boon to the only Methodist Church among a host of Presbyterian Churhes in the area. The seat of administration of the Volta Mission Circuit was, however, removed from Kpong to Somanya in 1932 by Revd. Mensah, the first Superintendent Minister to reside at Somanya as Circuit town. The Kpong Society then came under the pastoral care of District and Teacher Catechists, namely: Revd. Ernest Bruce (retired minister), T. K. Attrams, T. Asante. A. Tettey-Enyo, W. Mensah, J. T. Portupbhy, A. F. Vanderpuiye, E. Lamptey and C. Sappor. Kpong has since continued to be “a burning cotton-wool that cannot be quenched or bent reed that will never break”, with evidence that she has been the FOSTER-MOTHER OF THE CHURCHES IN THE VOLTA CIRCUITS.
