Fourth Sunday of Lent.

".. Father, give me the share of the estate that is coming to me..."(Luke 15:1-3, 11-32)
Today, the Church presents to us for our reflection the parable of the prodigal son. The parable teaches the love of the Creator and father of Mankind who is ready to forgive us sinners when we are truly repentant of whatever sin we commit.

Points for our reflection
Don't be wasteful.
The prodigal son wasted all his money on wild living. (Luke 15 13b, 30). What you have may be plenty today but don't be wasteful. (John 6:12-13)

Have regard for your elders.
The prodigal son had no regard for his brother and the father by making that request. Show some respect for others especially those older than you. (1Pt 2:17)

Desire your Father's will and not your own will.
Let us go for the will of God and not our own will. (Jn. 4:34, Lk. 22:42)

The father never stopped loving His son, and he watched for him to come home.
God never, ever stops looking for us to come home. He is a father searching everywhere to get a glimpse of us returning to Him. He searching for you and hoping for you to come to Him.

The father didn't wait for the son to get all the way home, and he didn't even wait for him to finish his apology before he started to celebrate.

My dear, the prodigal son might not have anyone to learn from but you have his story to learn from. Don't be a prodigal son, but if you're already a prodigal son, repent today and return home; repent today and return to God.

Happy Sunday
God bless you
+fr Willie

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT, YEAR C

"...Abraham believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as act of righteousness..." (Gen. 15:5-12, 17-19)
God made a Covenant with Abraham in which He promised to make him the father of a great race to which He would give the land of Canaan as their territory. The faith of Abraham is praised because he believed in God's promise that he would have descendants even though his wife Sarah was barren. Abraham here had demonstrated his faith through his actions, it was his belief in the Lord and not his action that made him right with God. (Rom. 4:1-5)

Abraham in our reading sought for great in faith in God. What must we seek for in our Christian life today?
*We must Seek God, not sin. (Amos 5:14)
*We must seek to Fear God, not men. (Prov. 19:23)
*We must seek to Love God, not the world. (1Jn. 2:15-17)
*We must seek to Believe God, not the deceiver. (Jn. 8:44).
*We must seek to Obey God, not your appetites (1Cor. 9:24-27)
*We must seek to Serve God, not self. (Col 3:24)
*We must seek to Worship God, not comfort (Habakkuk 3:17-18)

My dear, we cannot have a relationship with God seeking after what have been given up for our Christian life today. Our outward actions such as church attendance, prayer, tithe giving, good deeds, dress codes, singing etc would not by themselves make us right with God. It is our relationship with God based on great faith.

It is my prayer that we will always seek for the right ways to have a very good relationship with God, because what we do in life today, will determine the kind of resurrection awaits us. Amen.

Happy Sunday
God bless you
+fr Willie.

Jesus told her,(Martha)
“I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” (Read John 11:19-27)

Martha is one of the women I admire so much in the New Testament. She is an example of what friendship with Jesus truly means and how one can grow in ones faith as a friend of Jesus. Jesus said to her ‘I am the resurrection and the life…..anyonewho lives and believes in me will never die’. Then he asked her directly, do you believe this? And Martha said in response to Jesus, “Yes Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, and the one who is coming into the world”.
This is the great faith she expressed in her “friend” Jesus. It is that which was needed to bring back her brother from the tomb.
What are you personally convinced of? How have you grown since you came to believe? May the example of Martha inspire us to begin a journey of faith-growth.... . Fr. Francis Valantine Odoom #

Who can assure us that we will be alive tomorrow? Let us listen to the voice of our conscience, to the voice of the royal prophet: "Today,if you hear God's voice, harden not your heart." Let us not put off from one moment to another (what we should do) because the (next moment) is not yet ours. "

- Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

We reflect on two beautiful stories of friendship and hospitality from the book of Genesis(Gen 18:1-10) and the gospel of St. Luke (Lk10: 38-42). The stories underscore how people who show true friendship by welcoming others and showing hospitality offer them to God, man’s greatest friend.
In the first account, Abraham saw three strangers who had been traveling under the heat of the day’s sun. Abraham extended a warm invitation to the strangers in a friendly manner to accept a cup of cold water. The strangers accepted the offer of friendship and hospitality and came to Abraham who offered him not just cold water but also a delicious meal. After they had satisfied their hunger and quenched their thirst they showed appreciation by promising a son to Sarah, Abraham’s wife who was already well-on in years and was barren. The story underscores the importance of friendship and hospitality. Friendship is an ordinary human quality which finds expression in showing care, concern, love and help to other fellow human beings.
This story has its setting in the nomadic life of the semitic people who travelled long distances on foot or on an animal. In such context hospitality to a stranger was a highly recommended virtue. In our world of economic crisis and crime, hospitality appears rather unattractive and the virtue of true friendship vanishes in thin air. Abraham’s guests, like all others, were travelers, strangers who were hungry and thirsty. They were tired and were in dire need of some care and concern; They were in need of some relief. In the end, Abraham realized he had not just received a stranger in need of hospitality, but the true God who in man is the recipient of every act of hospitality or brutality. He rewards anybody who welcomes and shows true friendship to him by doing it for their neighbors.
In our second episode, Martha and Mary extend friendship to Jesus, they welcome him as a guest and provide him with the details of hospitality. Martha cooked and Mary sat at her feet and listened to him. To Martha, Jesus says one thing is the most important, and that is what Mary has taken, namely, 'sitting at the savior’s feet and listening to his words'. It is so significant to welcome Jesus into your house and into your situation but don't forget to allow Jesus reign in that situation after you have welcomed him.
We are called upon to live our faith through friendship. It is the way to peace and harmony and the foundation for building solid human relationships. Abraham first showed friendship to his guests by prostrating himself (this was the way a slave greeted a master).
We are invited to show friendship to the world around us because it is a way of serving God. We are called upon to welcome Jesus who comes to us in his word and meets us in the sacraments. Lets welcome him, our Lord, with humility like Abraham. Like Mary lets have time for his word of life, it is the part most important. If we welcome Jesus like a friend he will come and dwell in us, our hope of glory.
