Mama Esther, born Mrs. Esther Boakye-Duah, is one of Ghanaβs most respected gospel voices, a woman whose life, music, and ministry have become a living testimony of humility, faith, and divine purpose.
Her story begins long before fame ever found her. It is widely shared that her birth itself was a miracle: her mother, reportedly around 50 years old at the time, gave birth to her after dedicating her home to the work of God through the Church of Pentecost. From the very beginning, her life was seen as a testimony, one that would later echo through songs of faith, breakthrough, and victory.
Growing up in Ghana, Mama Esther eventually found her calling in gospel music, but not without divine connections shaping her path. Her close friend, gospel musician Grace Asare, played a crucial role in encouraging her to take music seriously. Grace helped her write early songs and introduced her to the recording studio, an act that quietly planted the seed of a ministry that would later bless thousands.
Her breakthrough came in 2002 with her debut album Me Judge Akasa, a project that immediately announced her arrival on the Ghanaian gospel scene. The album carried a strong spiritual weight, speaking about Godβs justice and faithfulness in the lives of believers. It quickly gained popularity, especially within Pentecostal circles, and her voice became familiar on radio, television, and church platforms.
Following this success, she released Misirimfuo Besan (2004), which featured the energetic and widely loved praise song βKyikyiri No Mame.β This track encouraged believers to stand firm and fight spiritual battles with faith. Her music was not just for listening, it was for strengthening the spirit.
She continued her musical journey with Time Nkoe (2006), a reflective album that reminded believers about the urgency of life and the importance of walking closely with God. Then came Goliath Beko (2008), a powerful declaration of victory over lifeβs βgiants,β reinforcing her signature message that no challenge is too great for God.
Over the years, she expanded her ministry through additional projects, including Pentecost Vol. 1, and released many songs that became staples in Ghanaian gospel music such as Me Judge Akasa, Time Nkoe, Goliath Beko, Kyikyiri No Mame, and Nyame Nye Mistake. Her style blends deep Akan expressions with prophetic, Pentecostal fire, music that comforts, convicts, and uplifts.
But Mama Esther is not only known for her music. She is a devoted member of the Church of Pentecost in Old Tafo, Kumasi, where she has served faithfully in church life, including leadership within womenβs ministry structures such as the Pentecostal Womenβs Fellowship. Her life in ministry reflects the same message she sings: humility, service, and devotion to God.
To many who meet her personally, she is not just an artist but a βmother in Zion.β Her humility and willingness to listen to peopleβs problems earned her deep respect, with many describing her as someone who carries a calming and caring presence. She is often seen as someone who truly lives what she sings.
Outside ministry, Mama Esther is also an entrepreneur, involved in fashion design and wedding decoration. This reflects another side of her life, practical, hardworking, and balanced between ministry and business.
Today, Mama Esther stands as one of the pillars of Ghanaian gospel music, especially within the Pentecostal tradition. Her journey from a miraculous birth to national recognition is often seen as a story of purpose fulfilled. Through decades of music and ministry, she has inspired countless believers to trust God through trials, fight spiritual battles with faith, and remain steadfast in hope.
Her legacy is not just in her songs, but in the lives those songs have touched. Mama Esther remains a living testimony that humility truly breeds greatness, and that when a life is surrendered to God, even a voice becomes a vessel of transformation.
