TRINITY 6/PENTECOST 7
Collect: Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth. Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever is counted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1st reading – Deuteronomy 10:12 – 11:1
2nd reading – Romans 8:1-11
Gospel- Mark 12:28-34

Theme: The more excellent way

Text: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12:30-31

Today is the 6th Sunday after Trinity or the 7th Sunday after Pentecost and the suggested theme is “The more excellent way. The theme clearly points to the fact that there are many other ways, but for the Christian there is only one way and it is superior to all other ways because it is the most excellent way. All the three readings for this Sunday are set to develop our understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ. To be a Christian therefore means that we must follow that most excellent way.
In the Old Testament reading from the book of Deuteronomy, Israel is required to serve God and to demonstrate her love for him by keeping his commandments; by demonstrating mutual love and justice in her relationship with others.
“And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? Deut 10:12-13. From these two verses, we discover that, to love God and obey his commandments is not to please God, but rather it is for our own good.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, today our world is in bad state because we have failed to love God and

TRINITY 15/PENTECOST 16
THEME: Love for the Neigbour

1st reading – Deuteronomy 15:7-11
2nd reading – 1 John 4:15-end
Gospel- Luke 16:19-end

Collect: Almighty God, you have taught us through your son that Love is the fulfilling of the law. Grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neigbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Text: “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land. Deut 15:11.

Today is the 15th Sunday after Trinity or the 16th Sunday after Pentecost. Our suggested theme is “the Neighbor”. We all know that the summary of the Ten Commandments is in two-fold. Love for God and Love for neighbor and our theme today emphasis on the love for neighbor. In all our three readings, we see this theme of neighbor running through. We discover that love is placed at the heart of all healthy and productive human relationships. This means that without love we cannot have any healthy human relationship and that is why Jesus simply said “love your neighbor as yourself.
We discover in our first reading from the book of Deuteronomy that, the proper attitude of the rich toward the poor must be one of open-hearted and loving generosity.
The Lord commands the people concerning the poor “There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers & sisters and toward the poor and needy in your land. Deut 15:11. Helping and supporting a brother or a sister who is in need is a command from the Lord. It is not a matter of choice. Today in our relationship with one another we seem to think that we can choose to support, but here scripture says that it is a command. As individuals and as a church, it is our collective responsibility to help those who are in need. But I am sure that if we want to evaluate ourselves on this issue we may fail, both as individuals and as a church. Sometimes we think that we
