WEEK 42
PENSIONS DAY
REMEMBERING OUR HEROES OF FAITH

REVIEW OF PREVIOUS LESSON (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn from the previous lesson?
b. How would you apply it?

MAIN TEXT: 2 Timothy 4:6-8

MEMORY VERSE:
Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. – Hebrews 13:7

INTRODUCTION
Everything that has a beginning has an end. There is a time to start occupational life – school or work – and a time to retire, enjoy the fruit of your labour and serve as ‘life consultant’ for younger ones. In the CoP, a day is set aside every year to reflect on the work of our forebears who have kept the faith, worked hard and are now on retirement. Such moments of reflection are good for us since they inspire us and re-energise us to fight the good fight of faith. During such times, we pray for the retirees, visit them, and bless them with material goods – in cash and in kind – to encourage them. In this study, we shall look at the life of the apostle Paul who was ‘retiring’.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. At what time in life and ministry was Paul when he wrote this passage? Verse 6.
2. To what three activities did Paul liken the Christian life and ministry? Verse 7.
3. What is the reward for faithfully completing the Christian journey? Verse 8.
4. What does Paul’s statement in verses 7 and 8 mean to you today as a Christian?
5. In what practical ways do you relate to any retired minister you know?

CONCLUSION
Paul was finishing his Christian race which he also likened to fighting the good fight or keeping the faith. In store for him upon ‘retirement’, is the crown of righteousness which the Lord Jesus will give to him and to all who faithfully complete their Christian journey. As a church, we have lots of retired ministers among us. As long as they are around, we must continue to pray for them, visit them, learn from their experiences and also support them with material blessings either in cash or in kind.

*GHANA PENTECOSTAL AND CHARISMATIC COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT*

*Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and the Future of our Children...*

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen of the press and welcome to this press conference called at the instance of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) to address and state our official position on the raging debate and controversy on the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), which the government through the Ministry of Education intends or intended to introduce into the Basic Schools curriculum come the next academic year.
We also intend to use the opportunity to respond to some statements the Minister for Education made at a press conference he addressed a few days back and also to bring some kind of closure to the first part of our strong resistance to CSE which we have labelled, “Comprehensive Satanic Education.”

Ladies and gentlemen, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council through its President, Rev. Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso earlier in the week stated the position of the Council in opposition to the government’s intended decision on this controversial policy.

We have observed with great satisfaction the overwhelming rejection by many Ghanaians, this unfortunate and dangerous policy proposals that have the potential to threaten and erode our long held traditional family value system that has served us well and continue to do.
We have also followed with keen interest government’s latest response through the Minister of Education, including the promise not to implement the controversial policy, in spite of its earlier denial of the existence of such a policy. While commending government on its latest decision to suspend the implementation of the CSE policy next academic year, we as a Council is however not persuaded by a mere suspension as evidence abound of existing government commitments to some international obligations on CSE, some of which have even been captured in the 2019 Budget Statement as presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, it is gratifying to note that we (Ghanaians) are not alone in opposition to this unpopular global move by some western countries hiding behind some United Nations Agencies and international NGOs to gradually introduce liberal education targeting children in vulnerable countries, including Ghana. Recently, Churches and parents in Canada and other western countries have forced their governments to back down on the implementation of CSE.
The GPCC wishes to state without any equivocation is position on the CSE as follows:

1. We reject absolutely the inclusion of Comprehensive Sexuality Education in any form and in any name in our school curriculum now and in the future as we see the policy as a long term subtle agenda to target our young population with a liberal mindset to accepting and tolerating LGBTQ as a normal societal behaviour in the very near future.

2. While acknowledging government’s latest statement and assurance of non-implementation of the policy in the next academic year, we wish to reiterate that anything short of an assurance of complete withdrawal of the policy and a promise never to introduce it in the very near future, will not be accepted.

3. We shall not as Churches, parents and communities shirk our primary moral upbringing responsibilities to our children by allowing government and other external interest groups to dilute our long tested traditional values on sexuality and allow the introduction of any demonic policies through CSE.

4. We shall not allow any external agency or internal government entity to attempt to “smuggle” the CSE into the mainstream school curriculum or any other projects or programmes often with funding from these so called external interest groups. To this end, we call on all Ghanaians, especially our Mission Schools, Teacher Unions, i.e. the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Concerned Teachers Association and other like-minded stakeholders of our educational system to remain vigilant and expose any attempt to pass this obnoxious policy through the backdoor.

5. To further the above stance, we are working closely with other ecumenical and interfaith groups through the NATIONAL COALITION FOR PROPER HUMAN SEXUAL RIGHTS AND FAMILY VALUES to build up a strong national resistance to this policy and to ensure its total withdrawal, never to be reintroduced in another form or name in the future.
In the spirit of accountable, transparent and participatory governance in a peaceful environment, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) wishes to put forward the following recommendations towards an acceptable and permanent resolution to this controversy:
1. Government should be transparent with the people of Ghana by publicly committing to completely withdrawing this policy instead of a mere assurance of suspension of implementation. This move we believe would engender trust between government and key stakeholders of our educational system. This is mutual trust is currently missing and must be pursued now.

2. Parliament as the representatives of the people and as a matter of urgency should commence the relevant Parliamentary processes to review aspects of the 2019 budget statement that committed state resources to funding this controversial CSE by ensuring that it is withdrawn and that no funds are expended on this policy.

3. We call on government, through the Ministry of Education to immediately convene a genuine and transparent stakeholder dialogue at all levels that would facilitate the drawing up our own home-grown solution to the problems of sexuality within the context of our tried and tested religious and cultural moral values without undue interference from any external donor agency.

4. As a Council, we are committed to supporting government in whatever way possible to realising the ultimate objective of a home-grown and Ghanaian owned policy on sexuality devoid of all subtle external influence.

5. We strongly urge the government and the main political parties to resist the temptation of introducing the usual partisanship into this sensitive debate as we are already picking signals of this unhealthy phenomenon in the current discourse.

In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen of the media, the GPCC is very resolute in its stance on the CSE and is standing firm with all other stakeholders on this matter with the hope that government would further assure us beyond suspension of the policy to taking concrete steps for genuine dialogue with all stakeholders to safeguard the future of our children from a perverse generation of vampires scheming to destroy us.

Ladies and gentlemen of the media, we also wish to take this opportunity to announce to you the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), which will be climaxed with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday October 13, 2019 at the Perez Dome at 3:00pm.
We also cordially invite you to other activities in connection with the anniversary as follows:

1. Anniversary Lectures: Friday, 11th October 2019 at Church of Pentecost, Kaneshie Central Assembly at 5.00pm

2. Health Outreach: Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the Royalhouse Chapel
God richly bless you for responding to our invitation in spite of the very short notice given.

CHARACTER IS KEY IN CHRISTIANITY –Apostle Dr. Alfred Koduah

The Area Head for Church of Pentecost, Teshie-Nungua Apostle Dr. Alfred Koduah has admonished Christians to critically consider their personal character in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. “The Character of a believer in Christ is more important than any other thing,” he said.
Apostle Koduah said this during the Sixth and Seventh Monthly Bible Schools in the Teshie Nungua Area held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 and continued on August 31, 2019 at the Fred Stephen Safo Temple, Nungua respectively.
The teachings were a continuation of ‘‘Notes on Pneumatology’’, which is the study of the personality and operations of the Holy Spirit.
He also explained that one of the most misunderstood issues in the church today is the gifts of the Holy Spirit. According to him, Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 12:1, ‘‘now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.’
“This means that whenever Christians become ignorant about spiritual gifts or matters concerning the Holy Spirit, they will be in serious trouble,” he explained.
According to Apostle Koduah, ‘‘As Pentecostals, the Holy Spirit is so important to us that we need to fully understand Him’’.
He said a critical study of 1 Corinthians 12:4-6; Ephesians 4:7-11 and Romans 12:6-8 will reveal that there are three main categories of gifts. These are spiritual, ministerial and grace gifts.
According to him spiritual gifts are given by God the Holy Spirit and it is theologically called ‘‘Pneumatikos’’. These nine spiritual gifts are word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discernment of spirits, prophecy and diverse kinds of tongues. Others are interpretation of tongues, faith, gifts of healing and working of miracles.
Apostle Dr. Koduah said the ministerial gifts also known as ascension or five-fold ministerial gifts are given by God the Son and are referred to as Domata by Theologians. These gifts include Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers.
‘‘It is important to note that the purpose of these gifts is not for boasting or self-aggrandisement, the Bible says that they have been given to prepare God’s people for work of service’’, he added.
On the other hand, grace gifts, theologically refers to as charismata are given by God the Father and they include serving, encouraging, generosity, leadership or administration, and showing acts of mercy and help.
The Area Head stressed that it is necessary to accept the fact that all the gifts work in harmony and co-operation, complementing one another for the building of the whole body of Christ. ‘‘Everybody must therefore respect the other person’s gifts, no matter how small it may be’’, he said adding, “Some operating in a particular gift may be tempted to lord it over those operating in other gifts.”
He admonished that those operating in the power gifts should be very careful they are not overtaken by the sensation and the crowd-pulling that goes with their gifts. ‘‘This is where many people have gone wrong’’, he said.
He also added that, ‘‘Above all, it is critical to emphasise the fact that no matter what gifts a person operates in, his or her personal character is of paramount importance to the Lord far more than any other thing’’.

“GREAT TRUTH PRODUCES GREAT FAITH”
r SCRIPTURE READINGS: Ephesians 1:13-19, Hebrews 2:1

EXPOSITION:

“For a person to have great faith, that person must know great Truth.”- Galyn Wiemers (Christian Author). The Word of God is a great Truth that unlocks our faith (Rom. 10:17). Any Christian who seeks to be victorious in his/her walk with Christ needs the word of God for enlightenment to:

1. Know God better- an accurate knowledge of God that will stimulate a deeper love for Him
2. Know the hope to which he/she has been called- this will produce perseverance in difficult moments
3. Know the riches of the glorious inheritance in the saints – to appreciate how valuable the saints are to God
4. Know His incomparable great power for us- this will produce confidence and boldness in spiritual warfare.

KEY VERSE:

“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1 (ESV)

LESSON/LIFE APPLICATION:

It is through the Word of God (the Gospel) that we believe unto salvation, and the same Word is needed to cause us to mature and grow our faith in God. The Christian must endeavour to engage with the Word of God daily because the enemy daily throws words at us that are meant to cause us to lose our faith and to drift away.

PRAYER:

Lord, please cause me to love your word. Amen.

“PRAYER AND RECONCILIATION”
SCRIPTURE READINGS: Ephesians 4:32, Romans 12:17- 21

EXPOSITION:

We will be praying for all who have offended us in one way or the other, intentional or not. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to be kind, tender-hearted and forgiving. We are going deep into our hearts and allow the Holy Spirit do His work by helping us to forgive.

Some of the hurts may be abuses from spouses, friends, family members or even mentors in whom we placed our trust. It could even be a relationship gone sour due to no fault of yours.

In all these, we still want to take time and pray for them. As many people as you remember today, pray for them. Release them from your heart and allow the Holy Spirit to heal you thoroughly.

Reconnect with all of them as much as possible, either through phone calls, direct contact or even social media. You will be amazed at what the outcome would be.

MEDITATION:

True forgiveness is achieved upon a reflection over the incidence or meeting the offender when no negative emotions are experienced; rather there is the experience of inner peace and joy bursting out into laughter.

PRAYER:

Pray as led
