“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).

Hope. It’s the oxygen our souls need to thrive. Hope is the wild-eyed creature that pops up after the enemy tries to eradicate the very beating of faith in our hearts. It’s the essence of being a Christ-follower and as a hopeless, broken world watches us, they question, “If hope does not disappoint us, why are Christians disappointed all the time?” Before we can answer that question, we need to define what hope is.

Hope looks like seeing hundreds of fireflies lighting up a dark night.

Hope is Hannah praying fervently, knowing God hears her but she’s taken for a drunken fool.

Hope is a father forgiving his wayward child.

Hope is the oxygen our souls breathe.

Hope is a torrential downpour that washes the world clean.

Hope is millions of little green shoots being unearthed and reaching to the heavens.

Hope is praying your loved one will be found alive after tragedy strikes.

Hope is knowing we will be reunited with our loved ones on the other side of heaven.

Hope is the soldier who begged Jesus to use His words to heal his son miles away.

Hope is a foster child finding his forever home in a family that fiercely loves him.

Hope is watching your autistic child make a friend.

Hope is walking hand in hand with Christ.

What Does 'Hope Does Not Disappoint Us' Mean?
The biblical definition of hope is "confident expectation.” Christian hope is rooted in faith in the divine salvation in Christ (Galatians 5:5) and through the love poured into us through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).

What have you been hoping for? Did anything above resonate with your heart? Or have you given up? Maybe you’re too afraid to invest in hope again because you dread the possibility of losing all hope. Or perhaps you don’t remember what hope even feels like anymore. If you’re in this camp, we need to go back to the Bible to understand God’s hope isn’t the same as the world’s hope. God’s hope isn’t the same as the world’s definition of hope. Both denote a positive expectation, but the world’s hope is rooted in a fallible person, situation, or thing. God’s hope is rooted in Him. The basis of Christian hope is found in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for.” The Greek word for hope in this passage is ‘hypostasis. Paul wrote in the book of Hebrews, “Faith is the ‘hypostasis of things hoped for…” which literally means “that which underlies.” Meaning our faith in Christ underlies our hope, the deeper our faith is, the more difficult it is for hope to be overthrown and turned into disappointment. A hope that does not disappoint means God has given us hope that rises in the midst of disappointment. This kind of hope is found not in the avoidance of suffering but the working through it because, suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

What Is the Context of Romans 5:5?

“Therefore, since we have been declared righteous (justified) through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us,” Romans 5:1-5.

We learn what hope means in God’s kingdom through the words of Paul beginning in the fifth chapter of Romans. Here, Paul tells us we have justice, peace, grace, perseverance, character, and hope which is all built on the faith we have in Christ. The kind of hope that does not disappoint that Paul is talking about here is the kind of hope that only God can give. This kind of hope relies on God—His power, His promises, and the sacrifices He made for us. This type of hope carries a promise because of what He has accomplished. As we read through the rest of Romans 5, we learn we have this hope because Jesus died for us (Romans 5:8). We have been justified and we will be delivered from all things. God didn’t save us based on our own righteousness. We were saved because of God’s Son. This hope points to glory – "we boast in our hope of sharing in the glory of God" (Romans 5:2).

This means, no matter what comes our way: suffering, turmoil, tragedy, death, and heartbreak. God will conquer it all. In other words, “Hope has a sanctifying effect. We who look expectantly for the return of Christ, knowing that when we see him we shall become like him, purify ourselves "as he is pure" (1 John 3:3 ). Hope also stimulates good works. Following his teaching on the resurrection of the dead, Paul exhorts his readers to do the Lord's work abundantly since such "labor is not in vain" (1 Cor 15:51-58 ).”

How Can Christians Hope When They Experience Disappointments?
Throughout Scripture, we find the same message trusting in God’s promises and hoping in the Lord:

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” Hebrews 10:23.

“I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance” Ephesians 1:18.

“I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word, I put my hope” Psalm 130:5.

If you read in between the scriptures about hope, you’ll also find hundreds of people in the Bible who experienced disappointment: Adam, Eve, Hagar, Job, Hannah, Moses, Sarah David, Jacob, Gideon, the Disciples, Paul, Elijah, and others.

Even Jesus experienced disappointment during his ministry: when the people didn’t receive His message, when His disciples struggled with doubt, or when He encountered legalistic religious leaders who wanted to kill Him. Yet, each of these accounts of real-life people are marked by moments of overcoming disappointment. They also went to accomplish great things for God and some even accomplished things beyond their wildest dreams. The common thread of each of them was their hope in God. Their belief in God was bigger than their disappointment. Instead of blaming God when tragedy struck, instead, they turned to God. John W. Marten says, “Hope in God transcends the lost hopes of human frailty and sin and begins to take effect in our lives precisely when human hopes are gone” (Rom. 4:18).

How can Christians hope when we experience disappointments? We put our hope in the Lord as we look at Paul’s example in Philippians 4:4. Here, Paul was suffering greatly but he was writing to the church in Philippi which happened to be a church that was exceptionally poor. But Paul was writing to them to encourage them to keep hoping as they learn to be content with having much or little. Paul wrote to encourage them through his example walking with Christ, that even in the midst of disappointment, he could deal with humble means or prosperity. No matter the circumstance Paul persevered through hope because he “can do all things through Christ, (Philippians 4:13, ESV).

The same One who strengthened Paul and provided contentment, courage, and hope is the same One working all things together—even disappointment—for our good (Romans 8:28). Because of Jesus’ power at work in us, we can breathe in His kind of Hope that does not disappoint.

Prayer for a Hope That Does Not Disappoint
Lord, thank you for your peace and for being our true source of hope. No matter what I walk through, may I lean on you. I believe that the hope you give me will not disappoint. You are working through every struggle and hardship I face. I will not be disappointed because of the salvation and blessing of a heavenly inheritance through Jesus Christ.

Help me to abound in joy and to rest in your loving arms. Give me strength to lean on your powerful promises today. Amen.

207 followers, thank you so much and God bless you greatly. With you the word of our Lord Jesus Christ will be heard in all nations. Thank you. 😊

To the members of God's church in Philippi, the apostle Paul writes, "For our citizenship is in heaven" (Philippians 3:20). While some may spiritualize this fact away, Paul's words come across as literal and real to those who understand that God has called us out of this world (John 15:19) and transferred us into His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13).

Having our citizenship in the Kingdom of God by definition makes us aliens in the physical country in which we live. Like ambassadors of a foreign government, we cannot participate in the politics of another country, a practice that would distract us from our real spiritual goal. However, we realize that the apostle Paul has challenged us to be ambassadors for Christ: "Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God" (II Corinthians 5:20).

Ambassadors to the whole world
We are called as ambassadors to be a blessing to all nations. Jesus called us to go out to all the world and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). The people of God are blessed in order to be a blessing to the whole world.

‘Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done’ (Psalm 105:1). Today, some of us do not even need to travel to be in contact with many nations. In Ghana, where I live, practically every nation in the world is represented.

The psalmist writes, ‘Remember the wonders he has done’ (v.5a), and then he goes on to do exactly that. He goes back through all the things God has done for them.

What are some of your favourite memories? Take time to remember God’s blessing and to thank him. Find a diplomatic way, as an ambassador for Christ, to ‘tell everyone you meet what he has done!’ (v.1, MSG).

As an ambassador for Jesus, stay close to him. ‘Look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always’ (v.4).

Most countries have diplomatic relations with other countries. Part of that is posting an Ambassador from your country in all the countries you have relations with. They are the representative of that country. Today we are talking about being Ambassadors of Heaven.

Message

When I hear the word Ambassador, I think of an important person from another country dressed very formally attending a formal meeting or social gathering. They are respected. They are there to represent and speak for their nation. In the world today, there are agreed upon laws and treaties that protect ambassadors and their staff. They cannot be unduly held or treated for any reason. It is understood that they are there representing the interests of their nation and mean no harm. They bring perspective and help nations work together. Sometimes they are an ambassador to a hostile nation. However, the agreed upon diplomatic rules allow them to be there and be heard, but they also must listen, and continue to work toward a mutual understanding and friendship.

Christians are called to be Ambassadors for Christ from Heaven here on earth. Look at 2 Corinthians 5:20.

2 Corinthians 5:20
(20) We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Paul is referring to himself and his companions here as he identifies themselves as ambassadors of Christ. Paul and his companions are not only sharing the message of Jesus but also representing Him here on earth.

Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Commentary says:

“Christians have been called by their King to serve as ambassadors in a world that is in rebellion against Him. However, God has given His representatives a message of peace and reconciliation. In this way, believers are God’s ambassadors, whose mission is to implore people to be reconciled to God, to listen to the forgiving voice of their Creator.”

Just as Paul and his companions were ambassadors for Christ in this world, so are you and I. Just as the ambassadors that have come before us brought God’s message of peace and reconciliation to this world, so must we. Let’s look at what those two messages are.

God’s Message of Peace
To understand God’s peace, we must understand what it is like to now have God’s peace. Before you knew God and were a follower of Jesus Christ you were subject to the storms of life in this world. There was little peace as the wind and waves of life’s storms hit you wave after wave. Life can lack purpose and we feel as though we must fight for every inch we can.

God’s peace takes that away. God’s peace is a peace that surpasses all understanding. Look at Philippians 4:5-7.

Philippians 4:5-7
(5) Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. (6) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (7) And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God wants all of humanity to experience and live in His peace. The peace of knowing that our lives are not lived in vain and we will be with Him for eternity in Heaven where there are no tears, and all is joy.

This message of peace must be lived before it can be shared. As an ambassador from Heaven, we must live within the peace of God and then share that peace with others. Hebrews 12:14 says:

Hebrews 12:14
(12) Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

An ambassador of a nation here on earth may not agree with the country he is working in, he must still live peacefully, not causing trouble or making a commotion. We too, as ambassadors of Heaven, must live peaceably with the people of this world as we represent the interests of God and Heaven here in this world. We do this by respecting others even when we do not agree. We do this by not backbiting and gossiping or starting rumors. We do this by living a life worthy of Christ and not pointing fingers at anyone, just as Christ never accused anyone.

God’s Message of Reconciliation
The other message as ambassadors of Heaven we are to convey is God’s message of reconciliation. The moment Adam and Eve invited sin into the world through their disobedience, we have needed reconciliation to return to the right relationship God intended for all of us from the beginning of time. That reconciliation looked somewhat different from the Old Testament days to the New Testament days. In the Old Testament God created a system of laws and sacrifices to teach mankind how to atone for his sins day in and day out. This was a stop-gap measure. As man sinned, those sins had to be atoned for, again and again. This was unsustainable, and God knew that. But God had a plan for real permanent reconciliation.

The time came for God’s final plan of reconciliation thousands of years later, and that plan was and is Jesus. That plan of reconciliation is quite simple. Accept Jesus’ sacrifice as your own and invite Him to be your Lord. There must be a level of trust. This level of trust comes from how people view us, His ambassadors. If we are trustworthy and loving, not condemning or divisive, people will accept that we represent Christ and all of Heaven. When they see that in us God’s message of reconciliation will be easier to see, understand, and accept.

That message of reconciliation is summarized in just two verses. John 3:16-17.

John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (17) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

This message of reconciliation has two parts. The first is that Jesus is God’s plan for reconciliation. This is the whole reason Jesus was sent to earth. This is why he left the side of God the Father, relinquishing His life as it was already in Heaven, and subjected himself to the process of birth and growth as a human. He willfully did what God asked him to do, not only giving up his life in the spirit initially but then willingly giving up his life here on earth to pay for all our sins.

This time, the Sinless paid the price for all our sins. There was no more need for further payment. It was done. There is a second part of God’s message of reconciliation, and this is the part often left out or forgotten. It is found in verse 17.

When God sent Jesus to pay for our sins, he sent him to save us, not condemn us. Jesus did not condemn. He got pointed a time or two with some of the religious leaders, but he never condemned anyone. He did not even condemn Judas who betrayed him. Jesus knew that Judas was part of the father’s plan.

As ambassadors, we are to carry this message of peace and reconciliation. As ambassadors of Heaven, we are to live this life of peace and reconciliation. We cannot do that if we continually argue and take sides on matters here on earth. Frankly, this earth someday will disappear. In the end days, it will be burnt up and will be replaced with a new earth for all those who have accepted Jesus.

Ambassadors of nations do not try and force their way on other nations. They are not trying to turn every nation into their own. They are representing the interests of their own nation. An ambassador who starts to take up his own causes and thoughts and not those of his own nation and leader will lose the respect of the nation he is serving in and will not be an ambassador for very long.

Sometimes we, as ambassadors of Heaven, are so focused on making Heaven on earth, we forget Heaven already exists. Jesus told us to go and make disciples which will build His Kingdom, Heaven, not our rendition of it here on earth. Stop trying to make earth like Heaven. It is not going to happen; the Bible tells us so. We are here for one purpose. Matthew 28:19-21 tells us:

Matthew 28:19-20
(19) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Stay true to the mission we have as ambassadors of Heaven, given to us by Jesus himself. Be an ambassador of Heaven and represent Heaven and God’s interests here on earth.

What Does The Bible Say Happens After You Die?

Every day thousands of people will take their final breath and slip into eternity, either into heaven or into hell. Although we may never know their names, the reality of death happens every day.
What happens the moment after you die?
The moment after you die, your soul temporarily departs from your body to await the Resurrection.
Those who place their faith in Christ will be carried by the angels into the presence of the Lord. They are now comforted. Absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Meanwhile, unbelievers await in Hades for the final Judgment.
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments… And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” ~ Luke 16:23a-24
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” ~ Ecclesiastes 12:7
Although, we grieve over the loss of our loved ones, we sorrow, but not as those who have no hope.
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:14, 17-18
While the unbeliever’s body remains resting, who can fathom the torments he is experiencing?! His spirit screams! “Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming…” ~ Isaiah 14:9a

Although he cries in his torment, his prayer offers no comfort whatsoever, for a great gulf is fixed where no one can pass to the other side. Alone he is left in his misery. Alone in his memories. The flame of hope forever extinguished of seeing his loved ones again.
On the contrary, precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Escorted by the angels into the presence of the Lord, they are now comforted. Their trials and suffering are past. Although their presence will be deeply missed, they have hope of seeing their loved ones again.
Dear Soul,
Do you have the assurance that if you were to die today, you’ll be in the presence of the Lord in heaven? Death for a believer is but a doorway that opens into eternal life. Those who fall asleep in Jesus will be reunited with their loved ones in heaven.
Those you’ve laid in the grave in tears, you shall meet them again with joy! Oh, to see their smile and feel their touch… never to part again!
Yet, if you don’t believe in the Lord, you’re going to hell. There is no pleasant way to say it.
The Scripture says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” ~ Romans 3:23
Soul, that includes you and me.
Only when we realize the awfulness of our sin against God and feel its deep sorrow in our hearts can we turn from the sin we once loved and accept the Lord Jesus as our Savior. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” ~ Romans 10:9
Don’t fall asleep without Jesus until you are assured of a place in heaven.
Tonight, if you would like to receive the gift of eternal life, first you must believe in the Lord. You have to ask for your sins to be forgiven and put your trust in the Lord. To be a believer in the Lord, ask for eternal life. There’s only one way to heaven, and that’s through the Lord Jesus. That’s God’s wonderful plan of salvation.
You can begin a personal relationship with Him by praying from your heart a prayer such as the following:
“Oh God, I’m a sinner. I’ve been a sinner all of my life. Forgive me, Lord. I receive Jesus as my Savior. I trust Him as my Lord. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you have never received the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior, but have received Him today after reading this invitation, please let us know.
