Mr Alfred Sakyi has been elected the new Lay President of The Methodist Church Ghana at the Churchโs 52nd Biennial Conference held at St Paul Methodist Cathedral in Tema.
Mr Sakyi secured 186 votes, representing 46.96% of the total votes cast. His closest contender, Madam Agatha Ennin Osei, received 79 votes, representing 19.94%.
According to the Churchโs constitution, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the votes to be declared the outright winner.
Following a concession by Madam Ennin Osei, Mr Sakyi was affirmed as the new Lay President through a standing vote by the Conference delegates.
The Lay President is one of the three executives of the Church, responsible for assisting the Presiding Bishop in the discharge of his duties.
Mr Sakyi takes office from October 1, 2026 and will serve a three-year non-renewable term.
In a brief remark, Mr Sakyi pledged his unalloyed support to Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev Prof Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu and expressed his profound appreciation to delegates for the confidence reposed in him.
