Can you be Confirmed in the Methodist Church without first being Baptised?
Short answer is No.
Confirmation does not stand alone, it builds on something that must already be in place.
And that foundation is Baptism.
In Methodist teaching, Baptism is the entry into the Body of Christ.
It is where:
โข You are received into the Church
โข You are united with Christ
โข You become part of the Christian family
So before anything elseโฆ Baptism comes first.
What then is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the strengthening and affirmation of that baptismal faith.
It is:
โข A public declaration of faith
โข A personal ownership of what was begun in Baptism
โข A moment where the Minister lays hands and prays for the grace of the Holy Spirit
So the order is clear
Baptism โ then Confirmation
You cannot confirm what has not begun.
Thatโs why, if someone was never baptised,
the Church will first administer Baptismโ
and then prepare the person for Confirmation.
Itโs not about restrictionโฆ
itโs about spiritual order.
Because the Christian journey has a foundation,
and everything else is built on it.
