Reflection on Today's first reading from 1 Samuel 24:3–21
Thrme: Mercy Is Greater Than Revenge

Spiritually, David’s decision to spare Saul reveals a heart deeply rooted in God. Though unjustly persecuted, he refuses to respond with violence. This shows that genuine holiness is not proven when life is easy, but when one chooses mercy in moments of power and provocation. David entrusts justice to God, demonstrating mature faith and interior freedom from hatred.
Pastorally, this speaks directly to everyday conflicts within families, parishes, workplaces, and communities. Believers are often tempted to “strike back” through words, gossip, resentment, or division. The example of David challenges Christians to choose forgiveness, patience, and reconciliation. When mercy is practiced, relationships are healed, communities are strengthened, and the Gospel becomes visible through lived witness.

Thursday. Reflection on 1 Samuel 18:6–9; 19:1–7 and Mark 3:7–12:

Theme: Jealousy Destroys Peace and Relationships

Saul’s jealousy shows how comparison weakens the soul. Instead of thanking God for David’s success, he allows envy to take root, which gradually turns into hatred and violence. When the heart is not grounded in gratitude and trust in God’s plan, it becomes vulnerable to sin and spiritual blindness.
This challenges believers to examine their attitudes toward the success of others: in ministry, family life, work, or community leadership. Jealousy can silently destroy friendships, parishes, and families. The Gospel invites us to celebrate others’ gifts, pray for a pure heart, and cultivate humility and contentment, so that peace and unity may flourish in our Christian communities.

God’s Strength Is Made Perfect in Human Weakness
David appears too young and weak to face Goliath, yet God’s power works through his humility and trust. This teaches us that God does not depend on worldly strength, status, or age. He works through hearts that trust Him completely.
