πŸ“– *YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD*

πŸ—“οΈMonday, December 4

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading:Matthew 5:13-16)

πŸ“œ"You are the light of the
world-like a city on a hilltop
that cannot be hidden ... In the
same way, let your good deeds
shine out for all to see, so that
everyone will praise your
heavenly Father"
*Matthew 5:14,16 (NLT)*

πŸ“‹ The world desperately needs
light because the darkness of sin
and evil covers the whole world.
Take the situation in Ghana as
an example. There is corruption
everywhere-in business, in the
law courts, in the workplace, in
educational institutions, in the
police service, in the
immigration service, etc. Evil
things are happening daily.
Some wicked husbands kill their
wives, evil people murder others for ritual purposes, public
officials steal from the public
purse, students cheat in
examinations, lying and
swindling are common, etc. The
situation looks totally hopeless.
But God has done something
about this: He has positioned his
redeemed people to be the light
of this dark world. In today's
focus text, Jesus declares: "You
are the light of the world...let
your good deeds shine out for
all to see, so that everyone will
praise your heavenly Father."
Jesus expects us as his followers
to be different from the corrupt
and evil people of this world. We
are to live godly lives in which
our integrity and good deeds
shine for God's glory. We are to
hold firmly to the word of God, becoming "blameless and pure
in a warped and crooked
generation" (Philippians 2:15).
Are you living as the light of the
world?

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
empoWer me to live as the light
of the world.

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* Philippians 2:12

πŸ”‘ *Key Lesson:* God expects
Christians to be the light of the

πŸ“– *TRIED AND TESTED*

πŸ—“οΈ Sunday, December 3

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading: 1 Peter 4:12-19)

πŸ“œ"Dear friends, do not be
surprised at the fiery ordeal that
has come on you to test you, as
though something strange were
happening to you
*1 Peter 4:12 (NIV)*

πŸ“‹All the trials, sufferings and
troubles we encounter in life
have a divine purpose. Today's
base text gives us one reason
why we suffer: to test us. The
faith of every believer will be
tested to ascertain whether or
not he/she is a genuine
Christian. It is easy to trust the
Lord and serve him when
everything is going well: good
health, a good job, a happy
marriage, financial prosperity,
etc. But whether or not we will
continue trusting and serving the Lord when we are going
through severe trials depends on
whether our faith is genuine or
not. The tried-and-tested
Christian is one who remains
faithful to the Lord no matter the
fiery ordeals he/she faces. Only
tried-and tested believers will be
saved: "But we do not belong to
those who shrink back and are
destroyed, but to those who
have faith and are saved"
(Hebrews 10:39). To be saved,
one must stand firm in his/her
faith in the Lord to the end. Also,
only those whose faith has
been severely tested and have
proven to be reliable by enduring
those trials patiently become
truly mature Christians (James 1:
1-4). It is beneficial to be a tried-
and-tested Christian because when Jesus appears, praise,
glory and honour will be the
outcome (1 Peter 1:6-7). Are you
committed to being a tried-
and tested Christian?

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
give me the grace to become a
tried-and-tested Christian.

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* 2 Corinthians 6:
3-10

πŸ”‘ *Key Lesson:* Only tried-and-
tested believers are genuine
Christians.

πŸ“– *DON'T BE ASHAMED*

πŸ—“οΈ Saturday, December 2

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading:1 Peter 4:12-19)

πŸ“œ"However, if you suffer as a
Christian, do not be ashamed,
but praise God that you bear
that name"
*1 Peter 4:16 (NIV)*

πŸ“‹When we choose to live a holy
and righteous life, but we keep
going through so many ordeals
in life, it is very easy to feel
ashamed, especially when we
observe that our unbeliever
friends and neighbours seem to
be free of the challenges we
encounter. But today's focus
text urges us not to be ashamed:
"However, if you suffer as a
Christian, do not be ashamed,
but praise God that you bear
that name." We don't have to be
ashamed because even our Lord
himself, the author and finisher of our faith suffered when he
was in this evil world, leaving us
an example to follow. He
cautioned us that as his
followers, we would suffer in this
world. On another occasion, he
told his disciples: "A servant is
not greater than his master. If
they persecuted me, they will
persecute you also... They will
treat you this way because of
my name..." (John 15:20-21). So it
is clear: Every committed
Christian will suffer because we
bear the name of Christ. But
when we suffer, we ought not to
be embarrassed. Instead, we are
to "praise God that (we) bear
that name" and rejoice over the
privilege of suffering for our
Lord. We must take inspiration
from the hope that as we share in his sufferings, we shall also
share in his glory. Are you
suffering as a Christian? Don't be
ashamed.

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
empower me to suffer for you
without being ashamed.

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* Act 5:33-41.

πŸ”‘ *Key Lesson:* We shouldn't be
ashamed when we suffer for
Christ.

πŸ“– *RELY ON THE HOLY SPIRIT*

πŸ—“οΈ Friday, December 1

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading:Zechariah 4:1-9)

πŸ“œ"So he said to me, "This is the
word of the LORD to Zerubbabel:
'Not by might nor by power, but
by my Spirit,' says the LORD
Almighty"
*Zechariah 4:6 (NIV)*

πŸ“‹There is a secret to success in
serving God: total dependence
on the Spirit of God. In today's
focus text, God sent Zerubbabel
a message to encourage him:
"This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by
power, but by my Spirit."" God
gave Zerubbabel the demanding
task of re-building the temple in
Jerusalem and wanted his
servant to understand that he
could not accomplish the task
by his own strength and abilities;
instead, he was to reply on the power of the Holy Spirit. In the
same vein, our Lord Jesus
declares in John 15:5, "... apart
from me you can do nothing." If
we want to do anything of
lasting value in God's kingdom,
we cannot depend on our own
abilities, skills or experience; we
need to rely totally on the Holy
Spirit. The arm of flesh will fail
us, but the Spirit of God will give
us outstanding success in
whatever we do. We need the
power of the Holy Spirit to be
able to impact people as
pastors, evangelists, elders,
singers, ushers, counsellors, etc.
By his power, we can use our
spiritual gifts effectively for the
good of others and undertake
projects successfully. Do you
rely on your own strength, abilities, experience and efforts
or on the Spirit of God?

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
empower me through your Spirit
to enable me to serve you well

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* John 15:1-8.

πŸ”‘ *Key Lesson:* We need the power
of the Holy Spirit to serve
effectively.

πŸ“– *THE ART OF SELF-CONTROL*

πŸ—“οΈ Thursday, November 30

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading: James 1:19-27)

πŸ“œ..my beloved brothers; let every
person be quick to hear, slow to
speak, slow to anger; for the
anger of man does not produce
the righteousness that God
requires"
*James 1:19-20 (ESV)*

πŸ“‹I have seen many believers and
even clergy who appear and
behave very maturely but when
they are hurt and become angry,
they throw away everything that
identifies them as believers and
behave like unbelievers. When
hurt, their emotions control
them more than the Holy Spirit
and the word of God and for this
reason, many relationships and
ministries have been destroyed
or damaged. Someone rightly
said: "Nobody got you angry; you only choose anger as a
response". Numbers 12:3
describes Moses as gentle and
humble than any man on earth
yet he lost it at a particular time
because of uncontrolled
emotion. God told him to speak
to the rock but he hit the rock
instead; he acted in anger and
disobeyed God's instruction. The
truth is, anything you can't
control is your master and as a
master, it will make you disobey
your true master, the Holy Spirit.
Romans 12:2 talks about being
transformed by the renewing of
the mind but the truth is, there
can't be any genuine
transformation in one's life if Self
-control is not total. The real
essence self-control lies in
allowing the word of God and the Spirit of God to become
your only influencers. That way,
you become sold out to the Holy
Spirit. Are you controlled by the
Holy Spirit or your emotions?

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Holy
Spirit, take control over my
entire life.

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* Galatians 5:22-
23

πŸ”‘ *Key Lesson:* You are a spiritual
being with emotions; so learn
the art of self-control.

πŸ“– *DON'T COVER UP YOUR FAULT*

πŸ—“οΈ Wednesday, November 29

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading: 1Chronicles 19:1-1O)

πŸ“œ "Now the people of Ammon
realized how seriously they had
angered David, so Hanun and the
Ammonites sent thirty-eight
tons of silver to hire chariot
troops"
*1 Chronicles 19:6 (NLT)*

πŸ“‹ Human beings, in most cases,
like shifting blame and are not
ready to accept mistakes easily.
David's intention to show
complete loyalty to Hanun was
wrongly understood because of
bad counselling from Hanun's
advisor which in effect brought
disaster and waste of resources.
In the focus verse, the people of
Ammon realized how deeply
they had angered David by
shaving the beards and cutting
off the robes of David's ambassadors. Instead of
admitting their disastrous
mistake and pleading for
forgiveness and reconciliation,
they spent a huge amount of
money to strengthen their
defense against Israel. It is not in
your interest to defend your
position when you are clearly
guilty of an offense. Doing that
will rather make things worse by
bringing sorrow and disaster
now or in the future. To avoid
compounding our problem, we
should seek forgiveness and
reconciliation the moment we
realize our fault. Accepting our
fault and apologising and
seeking peace wll prevent the
numerous conflicts in our
homes, the church and society.
Jesus says,
".. if
you are offering your gift at the altar and there
remember that your brother has
something against you, leave
your gift there.. First go and be
reconciled to your brother
(Matt 5:23, 24). Instead of
covering up your fault, seek
reconciliation and peace.

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
give me the wisdom to always
seek reconciliation and peace.

πŸ“– *THE WAY TO PEACE*

πŸ—“οΈ Tuesday, November 28

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading:Isaiah 48:16-22)

πŸ“œ"Oh that you had listened to my
commands! Then you would
have had peace flowing like
gentle river and righteousness
rolling like waves"
*lsaiah 48:18 (NLT)*

πŸ“‹ God's plan for the lsraelites was
that they would enjoy peace,
but they disobeyed, hence the
complaint in the focus text; "Oh
that you had listened to my
commands!" God's plan looks to
the day when Jerusalem would
be filled with the glory and
righteousness of his people who
would live within its wall in
peace and joy. God wants his
children to go in the way of
obedience to his commands
which will make possible the
peace like a river. In Genesis 21:23, 24, Abraham made peace
with Abimelech so they can live
together in peace with each
other; "Now swear to me here
before God that you will not deal
falsely with me or my children
or my descendants, show me
and the country where you are
living as an alien the same
kindness, I have shown to you".
Abraham said "I swear it".
Believers should not be the
cause of confusion in their
communities, they should
always aim to be peace makers.
Here is a command; ".. If it is
possible, as far as it depends on
you, live at peace with
everyone" (Romans 12:17-18).
Peace can be hard to arrive at
but in our stress and fear, God
extends his peace to us. Are you a peace maker?

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Oh Lord,
make me a peace maker.

πŸ“– *MAKE GOD YOUR STRENGTH*

πŸ—“οΈ Monday, November 27

πŸ‘‰πŸ»(Reading: Psalm 73:1-28)

πŸ“œ "My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my
heart and my portion forever"
*Psalm 73:26 (NIV)*

πŸ“‹ In our world today, many people
are living in circumstances that
are so challenging that humanly
speaking, there is no way they
can get out of them. Some are
experiencing situations so
severe that they are almost
giving up. But God has an answer
to all difficulties. When the
Psalmist in our reading for today
looked round himself, there
seemed to be many things
happening that he couldn't
understand. Why were some
people better off materially than
him? Why do others seem to
have less trouble than he, though he had tried to live for
God? The more he
contemplated these, the more
he was troubled at the seeming
injustice around. However, his
thought patterns changed when
he encountered the presence of
God. He realized that God knew
what was going on and wasn't
going to overlook the evil that
was prevailing. When he took his
eyes off people and began to
focus on God, he realized God
was still in control after all.
Burdens may overwhelm us,
disappointments may come our
way, we may feel deserted by
family and friends, but God is
the one we need. He is our
strength in times of trouble. He
can turn our sorrows to joy, our
trials to triumphs and our problems to praise. ls your flesh
and heart failing? Turn to God
for strength.

πŸ› *Meditation And Prayer:* Lord,
help me look up to you always.

πŸ“š *Further Reading:* 1 Kings 19:4-8;

strength in times of trouble
