Signs of Depression You Shouldn't Ignore

Depression does not always announce itself. It does not wear one face, speak with one voice, or show the same signs in every person. Some people may experience only a few of the many signs, while others may experience close to all.

Recognizing the symptoms is important because what is not recognized may go unnoticed for too long.

Here are four key signs to look out for:

1. Persistent or Prolonged Sadness: This is one of the common signs of depression. A person may become tearful without knowing why. Sometimes, there may be no particular event to explain the tears, and a person may simply wake up sad, carrying a heaviness that cannot clearly be explained.

2. Difficulty Concentrating and Remembering: It can become difficult to focus, think clearly, make decisions, or even remember what has just been read.

3. Changes in Sleeping Patterns: This is very common. It may include insomnia or oversleeping, as sleep can sometimes become a temporary escape from overwhelming thoughts.

4. Anxiety and Excessive Worrying About the Future: A person may feel tense or nervous for no obvious reason, worry excessively about the future, or become afraid of what lies ahead without clearly knowing why. This is why we are instructed to "be anxious for nothing" (Philippians 4:6).

It is crucial to note that these signs, when experienced intermittently or once in a while, are not a sign of depression. It is only referred to as depression when it is chronic or persistent.

One must learn to recognize what weighs on the soul and deal with it before it becomes overwhelming.

One of the primary sources of depression is satanic attack. Isaiah 61:3 speaks of “the spirit of heaviness,” while 1 Samuel 16:14 shows the spiritual dimension of what Saul experienced. Depression can, therefore, become an avenue through which the devil oppresses the mind and emotions.

Anxiety and excessive worry can also weigh heavily on the mind. This is why the Bible says, “Be anxious for nothing” (Philippians 4:6). Worry shifts one’s attention from God to the problem and is a sign that one’s faith is not working. Proverbs 4:25 tells us to keep our eyes looking straight ahead. Worrying is a sign of unbelief; instead of carrying the burden, cast your cares upon the Lord (1 Peter 5:7, Psalm 55:22). Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; for the future of that man is peace (Psalm 37:37), for I have not seen the righteous forsaken (Psalm 37:25).

Loss or bereavement can bring deep sorrow and weigh heavily on the soul, but every challenge is surmountable. Start afresh. Stop the tears. Let’s move on. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter (John 14:26). Don’t cry over lost things because the Lord restores (Nehemiah 2:1–3, Joel 2:25).
