Topic: Existence At The Top- The Power Of Obedience
Text: Deuteronomy 28:1
“And it shall come to pass, if thou shall hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth”
The word of God is a reservoir that contains the sure promises of God for us his children. The promises of God are yeah and amen. This means that the promises of God can be trusted, we can bet our lives on it. They can’t fail us. Our God is a faithful God. One thing we have to know is that the promises of God will forever stand without fail. All that is expected from us is that we should be faithful with our part of the bargain. Covenants are not supposed to be kept by one person. In fact, a covenant is always between two people with very important responsibilities. In order for the pact to be successful, each party must play its role to the fullest. When God met Abraham at the very base of his life, at the age of 75, Abram was synonymous to nothing. Scripture says in Isaiah that he was one, in other words, he had nothing at the time. However, God went ahead and entered into a covenant with him by asking him to leave his father’s house and his own place of safety to a land he was going to show him that he had no knowledge about at the the time. Abraham had every right to reject the offer. Why because at that age what was there to expect again? He could easily conclude that life was over with him and he better wait for death to lay him to rest. He however didn’t do that, rather he whole heartedly accept the offer and left as he was commanded in order for the covenant to be effective. He obeyed God even though it did not make sense at the time. The word says we should not lean unto our own understanding. Leaning on our own understanding is we reducing our decisions and actions to what our fickle minds can tell us. But living our lives like that will always be disastrous. Abraham in obeying God transitioned from Abram to Abraham. It was that single act of obedience that break the back of insignificance to the father of many nations in his life. His life from zero to hero was anchored on that obedience to the covenant. God indeed set him on high above all nations as it was told to his descendants many years after him. God is indeed a covenant keeper.
We are considering how Abraham’s obedience helped him to get to the top. This is why scripture says the laws and the principles of scripture are not grievous. They are written for our benefit. When we give ourselves to obeying the word of God, we don’t lose anything, rather we gain everything. After Abraham waited for over 25 years to give birth to his promised son Isaac, God waited until this boy was a teenager when the bonding between him and the father was getting along then God instructed him to sacrifice his only son Isaac to him. This is tough! Isn’t it? It is because we can do so many things for God but sacrificing a son is not one of the easiest things to do for God. Unfortunately, some of us cannot even give God a free will offering much less a tithe. We need the mercies God. Abraham seemed to understand the power of covenants so anytime God demands something from him he was on the run. He hurriedly organized Isaac and his servants to go and sacrifice his only as he was demanded by God. He successfully put Isaac on the altar to slaughter him only to hear an angelic call to stop sacrificing his son for an alternative ransom. It was at this point of his willing obedience to God that God had to swear by himself that in blessing he will bless Abraham, and in multiplying he will multiply his seeds like the stars of heaven and as the sand which is upon the sea shore. What a powerful blessing!! Today many of us desire the blessings of Abraham but we are always running away from the obedience of Abraham. Obedience is a higher price to pay in the kingdom but the rewards of obedience are unimaginable. Anyone who obeyed God in scripture was handsomely rewarded. Simon came from fishing with empty boat and thought that it was all over with him carrier wise but a simple act of obedience brought him an unprecedented catch than in his entire fishing profession. Let’s embrace ourselves to obey God no matter what it will take and the good Lord will lift us through the act of obedience in Jesus’s name.
