THE CHRISTIAN HOME AND THE FAMILY: THE PLACE OF DISCIPLINE AND TRAINING

SCRIPTURE READINGS: Hebrews 12:5-6, Proverbs 3:12, Daniel 1:9-16

EXPOSITION:
Discipline is an integral part of raising godly children, for we know that the “LORD disciplines those He loves” according to Proverbs 3:12. Thus, we should neither take discipline lightly nor become disheartened by it as the Lord “punishes everyone He accepts as a son” (Heb 12:5-6). And we know that God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. Likewise, when we are disciplined by our parents, we receive wisdom resulting in good character. In fact, even at a tender age children are able to discern that discipline is rooted in love. That is why children who grow up in homes without discipline often feel unloved and are more likely to disobey authority as they grow older.

Dr. James Dobson, America’s foremost family counselor says that discipline and training for the young is very paramount and must not be left to the teacher in the classroom, but must rather be the full responsibility of the parent. Daniel and his friends were able to make the right choices in life because they well trained and disciplined young men. The world they lived in is similar to ours today, therefore as youth of today we must learn from their example not to be influenced by the world but by the word of the Lord.

PRAYER:
Father, please grant us grace to be strong and willing to submit to godly training and discipline in Jesus name. Amen

THE CHRISTIAN HOME AND THE FAMILY: HONOURING OUR PARENTS

SCRIPTURE READINGS: Deuteronomy 5:16 / Romans 13:7

EXPOSITION:
I had a conversation with some young people in my neighbourhood; one young lady said, “my mother gets on my nerves when she instructs, ‘clean your room,’ ‘wash the dishes,’ ‘attend to your kid brother, ’blah...blah...blah. My mother drives me nuts, she has no clue what it is like to be young.” Another young guy said, “my Dad is too controlling, he is always in my business, he checks my text, facebook, whatsApp, emails, and is always asking me questions that I am not ready to answer. I’m happy whenever he is out of town for a business trip or funeral.” Most of us as youth can relate to the situation of this young lady and gentleman, but the scripture clearly points out to us that we are to honour our parents."Honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you…”

LIFE APPLICATION:
In practical terms how can we honour our parents? I believe we can do that by understanding and speaking very well of them, by refusing to speak evil of them no matter the situation. We live in a time that it is considered to be very therapeutic to air our dirty laundry. We think little of telling the world exactly what we think of our spiritual authorities, our bosses or parents. Yet the Bible warns us that we owe honour and respect to all of the authorities God has placed over us (Romans 13:7). Scripture warns us that our words have the power to extend honour or dishonour. We cannot miss that in the Old Testament, the penalty for cursing parents is the same as the penalty for assaulting them (Exodus 21:15-17, Leviticus 20:9), for the root sin is the same. To curse parents or to strike parents is to violate the fifth commandment as well as the sixth. We need to speak well of our parents, both living and dead to everybody in our sphere of influence including those in our churches and communities.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, grant me the wisdom and fortitude to be able to honor my parents in a manner that pleases You and brings glory to Your name. Amen

Restoration In Paradise- The New Garments From God

11 Mar 2021

SCRIPTURE READINGS: Genesis 3:20-24 / Revelation 13:8

EXPOSITION:
God’s punishment for the woman and the man are immediately followed by two observations that possibly convey a sense of hope. First we see the man naming his wife Eve which means life giver. Second we see God clothing the couple in a better and permanent garment with the skins of animal. Man’s attempt to clothe themselves without God only left them at the mercy of the scourging sun on the fig leaves. God’s love for humanity was demonstrated when He first gave by killing an animal to clothe the fallen man and his wife. No wonder the Bible says while we were yet sinners Christ (Lamb of God) died for us. That animal that was killed in the Garden of Eden would eventually be the Lamb of God that was slain from the foundation of the world to cover the saints with the True and Lasting garment of victory over the beast.

LIFE APPLICATION:
The lessons we can learn from the first couple is that any attempt of man to cover his nakedness without God only made them more exposed and vulnerable to the vagaries of the weather, to sin, pollution and deception from the devil. It is only the covering from the Lamb of God (Jesus) that would give us the permanent victory the weather (nature), sin and the devil. As a youth desire to be clothed with Jesus in His ultimate Truth and power in Jesus name.

PRAYER:
Lord, clothe me in the beauty of Your holiness in Jesus name Amen!

The Fruit Of The Spirit Is Love
r SCRIPTURE READINGS: Galatians 5:22-26; Mark 12:29-31

EXPOSITION:
Love is an integral component of the fruit of the Spirit. The apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Galatia contrasts the fruit of the Spirit with the works of the flesh. The works of the flesh are characteristics demonstrated by the carnal nature. The fruit of the Spirit are also the attributes and characteristics exhibited by the spiritual man through the enablement of the Holy Spirit. The believer is expected to say no to the deeds of the flesh and walk in the Spirit.

When Jesus was quizzed by the teachers of the law about the greatest commandment, He stated that love to God and love to your fellow neighbour. In talking about the fruit, the Bible says “Against such things there is no law.” From this we realize that one major law that God requires us to observe is to have love. With genuine love, all the other components of the fruit begin to fall in place.

As believers, we must demonstrate unrivalled love for God through deepening our relationship with Him. We must love the things God loves and hate the things He hates. In addition, we must love our fellow human beings, even our enemies.

PRAYER:
Pray as you are led.
