Blessed Lent 2023 (Fr JP Tindana)
My dear brothers and sisters, Knights and Ladies of St John International, I bring you greetings from Houston in the United States of America.

As you are all aware, once again, the season of Lent is here with us. We give thanks to God for giving us the blessings to witness yet another season of grace.

My dear brothers and sisters, let us not take it for granted that Lent 2023 has come to meet us. Let us not celebrate it as business as usual, but rather let us observe it as if it is our very last season.

Fortunately for us, we have the three pillars of Lent to guide us, that is, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These spiritual pillars, when put into perspective and properly practised, will go a long way to enhance our spiritual life.

And when our spiritual life is enhanced, it will spill over into our relationship with one another. The Lord Jesus would teach us how to love one another, how to live as brothers and sisters.

At the end of the day, we cannot forget that whatsoever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters we do it to Jesus. And Jesus is the best person to teach us how to love one another.

I wish you all a blessed Lenten season and may the Easter joy that we look forward to come and meet all of us in good health.

May Mother Mary keep you all under her maternal protection and draw you ever closer to Christ her son. God bless you all.

A Christmas and New Year message from Darlington Kojo Noamesi and Patience Dapaah

Part 2 of the Message from our Regimental Chaplain

Will Christmas Meet You Not Prepared??

Spiritual Preparations
We have already stated above that Catholics and some Orthodox Churches set aside a period of preparation called Advent season to prepare spiritually and physically for the celebration of Christmas. This is so important because we do not have to lose sight of the spiritual basis of Christmas.

If there is any opportunity to attend a carol service, let us take advantage of it to participate. It does not matter whether it is held by a religious institution or not. No matter where it is held, it would definitely involve singing of Christmas hymns and reading of biblical passages. Let these speak to you. Note them down and find time on your own to re-read them. This year’s carol service must mean a lot to you.

Before the Christmas season arrives, we can challenge ourselves to read some of the biblical passages that talk about the birth of Christ, especially the Gospel narratives. This will be a way of reminding ourselves that Christmas is not primarily about eating and drinking and self-indulgence. It is about the birth of the Saviour who would later die a shameful death in order to take away our sins.

Bearing in mind that the season comes with stress, it would be good if we can find time to calm ourselves. I found a quote attributed to Chuang Tzu which states, “To a mind that is still, the entire universe surrenders.” The Psalmist also says, “Be still and know that I am God” (46:10). If we can find five minutes daily to sit quiet, we shall in no doubt develop the art of stillness which is good for our spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Physical Preparations
In recent times, the issue of climate change has become topical. The recent global meeting of nations to discuss the negative effects of climate change and how to reverse the tide was the COP26 held in Glasgow, Scotland. In his encyclical Laudato sì, Pope Francis referred to the planet earth as our common home.

Will Christmas Meet You Not Prepared??

Rev. Fr. Capt. John Patrick Tindana
Catholic Archdiocese of Accra
O Come All Ye Faithful

As the Christmas season draws close, many are the joyous carols that would resound from many sources – from radio stations to TV stations, and from carol services to liturgical celebrations. The joy of Christmas is electrifying.

Prior to the celebration of Christmas itself, many institutions, religious and non-religious, undertake Christmas carol services. This is a quasi-liturgical celebration which involves the singing of Christmas hymns, reading of Bible passages that talk about the birth of the Saviour, and the delivery of Christmas messages.

The Period of Preparation
Indeed, the Catholic Church and some Orthodox Churches set aside a period of preparation called Advent season to prepare spiritually and physically for the celebration of Christmas. This and many other preparatory activities point to the importance of the festival which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Christmas is a festival of light. It is, therefore, not surprising that it is one celebration which involves different types of decorations with lights of different colours, shapes and sizes. Streets and parks, churches and homes, eateries and pubs, everywhere people meet, are decorated to announce the coming of the Yuletide. The Gospel of John states, “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world” (1:9).
