WORD of LIFE

For the Week (28th April~4th May, 2024)

TEXT: MATTHEW 23:27-32

THEME: WHITEWASHED TOMBS

According to Jewish Law, contact with the dead makes one temporarily unclean. (Num 19:11-20). Hence, it is customary among Jews to whitewash tombs to make them visible so that no one would inadvertently step on or come into contact with them so as not to contract ritual uncleanness.

Jesus, during his earthly ministry, likened the scribes and Pharisees to these tombs: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Even so, you too outwardly appear righteous to others, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Mat 23:27-28).

Jesus clearly tagged the Pharisees as nothing but hypocrites. Hypocrisy is an affront to truth. A hypocrite presents himself as a saint, whereas in reality, he is a sinner. Per Jesus' analogy and description of the Pharisees, can we also say that there are a lot of hypocrites in our Churches today since there are Christians whose characters are even worse than Pharisees of Jesus' days? We have Bishops, pastors, prophets, elders, deacons, some members who are nothing but armed robbers, prostitutes, murderers, etc. A lot more hypocrites in our churches today. Some Christians are nothing but wolves in sheep clothing. They steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10) but they are celebrated in our Churches because of their wealth, fame and power.

It is evident in the New Testament that Jesus had a zero tolerance for hypocrisy and he expressed his utter disgust when he saw it. I believe Jesus still frowns on it and hates hypocrisy.

Jesus goes ahead and concludes the set of “seven woes” against the Pharisees (Mat 23:13-32) with a description of them as people belonging to a family of murderers (Mat 23:29-32). This final woe is the most serious indictment of all.

Beloved in Christ, there is no need of faking in life — No need to pretend to be fresh when, in reality, one is stale. Why pretend to be what you are not? Why do you live your life to please others? The pretence is disgusting. Be real as a Christian. If you are down, ask for help. If you mess up, admit it and start afresh. Let us be real and present ourselves as we truly are. The energy we invest into pretending can be channelled into working on ourselves in order to become better persons.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, let your Holy Spirit help me to live a truthful and worthy life. Amen.

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV)

Beloved in Christ, always remember that there's nothing hidden before God. All your actions, whether good or evil are all before him and you will be judged based on those actions. Always remember, that heaven and hell are real so be mindful with whatever you do with your life. Shalom!

WORD of LIFE

For the Week (14th~20th April, 2024)

TEXT: 1 CHRON. 4 : 9-10

THEME: THE PRAYER OF JABEZ (PT1)

“Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "’Because I bore him in pain.’" And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "’Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’" So God granted him what he requested.”

This text has been referred to as the briefest of Bible biographies. The prayer of Jabez has incredible potential of revolutionizing our lives. This prayer reveals our Heavenly Father’s desire to give us so much more than you may have ever thought to ask for. In this prayer, a “little difference makes all the difference.”

What do we know about Jabez?
1. The only place in the Bible he is mentioned.
2. Things started badly for a person no one had ever heard of.
3. He prayed an unusual, one sentence prayer.
4. Things ended extraordinarily well.

1 Chron. 4:9 says, “Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.” God created him an honorable person. Even though Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, his life was full of pain. Things did not move the way he expected. Something limited his progress and dishonored him.

Just like some of us, we're highly respected in society but deep down our hearts we know that things are really bad for us. We laugh just for the cameras. We're really struggling and sometimes feel like ending it. People see your marriage and they're like wow, what a beautiful marriage, meanwhile you are dying slowly in that marriage. People see you to be financially sound yet you know you're broke and what to eat with your children, sometimes is a problem. Jabez was held in high esteem among his brothers yet things were bad.

Jabez wanted to be more and do more for God, but something limited him and stopped him doing that. But according to v.10 of our text, God granted him his request after calling on him. Ever since I became a “believer,” I have desired to “make a difference,” to live as to be missed, and to help the body of Christ. I’ve never had a desire to “just get by.” God placed in my heart a “whatever it takes” attitude from day one and I still desire to do a great work for God. However, just like Jabez, there was a limitation set for me. But just like Jabez, I also prayed for the limit to be broken and God of Israel granted my request. The prayer of Jabez definitely moved him beyond the limits.

From today, I pray God breaks every limitation set for your life in Jesus name. Limitation on your marriage, child bearing, finance, ministry, business, etc. be broken in Jesus name. The beginning of your breakthrough is the starting point of your limitation. God bless you and increase you.

PRAYER: Father Lord, enlarge my territory and bless me in Jesus name. Amen.

"David acted wisely in all his ways and succeeded, and the Lord was with him." (1 Sam. 18:14).

From today, may the Lord be with us and help us to act wisely and become more successful in all our endeavours in Jesus' name. Amen.

WORD of LIFE

For the Week (4th~10th Frbruary, 2024)

THEME: RIGHT CHOICES

"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Prov. 14:12).

A choice can either bless or mess your life. Sometimes, a choice that may appear right in one’s eyes may end up in flames. Some lives have been destroyed because of wrong choices or decisions made in the past. Our emotions and thinking patterns often influence the choices we make. For this reason, seeking the face of God before making any major decision is key for any child of God. God sees what the human eyes cannot see.

Jesus spent the whole night in prayer before choosing the twelve apostles. "... Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles..." Luke 6:11-12). Yes, he did an “all night” before choosing Judas Iscariot and the other eleven disciples. You may ask why Judas Iscariot who will betray him later? Don't forget that, that decision he made in prayer turned out to be a blessing to humanity. Even the infamous decision of Judas to betray Jesus would be transformed by the power of God, and what was meant to destroy would result in the restoration of humanity to God.

When we sincerely seek the face of God in decision-making, we can trust that the grace of God would be sufficient for us. When God is with us, even if the decision we make leads us through ‘the valley of the shadow of death’, we need not be afraid for the faithfulness of God will see us through (Ps. 23: 4).

Are you faced with a major decision to make concerning your relationship, job etc.? Pause. Do not rush. Seek the face of God, and you would not regret your choice. And even if after seeking the face of God and you're still faced with a challenge after your decision, worry not, God will surely see you through to a successful end.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, send forth the light of your Holy Spirit to brighten my mind at the crossroad where I stand. Help me to make right choices in life in Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
