GOOD LIFE DEVOTION

Topic: THE SANCTIFICATION DIVERGENCE

1 Thessalonians 5:23 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”

Message:
The progressive insight into the union with God in Christ, experienced a detour arising from the Augustinian formulation of the doctrine of original sin based on a mistranslation of Romans 5:12 from Greek into Latin.

From there, especially the Latinized western Christianity which gave birth to Protestantism, Evangelicalism, Pentecostalism and Charismatism dived into more of how to please God by becoming more sanctified from sin. That means theosis got stagnated at catharsis. A quotation from The Wesleyan Articles of Religion reads, “We believe that sanctification is that work of the Holy Spirit by which the child of God is separated from sin unto God and is enabled to love God with all the heart and to walk in all His holy commandments blameless. Sanctification is initiated at the moment of justification and regeneration. From that moment there is a gradual or progressive sanctification as the believer walks with God and daily grows in grace and in a more perfect obedience to God”

This level of understanding also hardly gives certainty to our union in God through Jesus Christ. Therefore, though this sanctification divergence is an advancement of catharsis of a sort, there is more ahead of the body of Christ on our path of Ephesians 4:13, hence the progression into the divinity of the sons of God.

Topic: FROM THEOSIS

2 Peter 1:4 “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust”

Message:
The teachings of many early Church fathers, especially about the incarnation of Jesus Christ, reveal that the emphasis of the Apostles and the early church was theosis - making divine. It is an orthodox Christian doctrine that refers to the transformative process of becoming like or united with God.

The patristic fathers taught that in Christ, God became human except sin, in order to make humans become God except in His essence. They explained that though accomplished by the workings of God, in theosis, a person must willingly participate in the life of God through practices like the liturgies and sacraments of the Church, incessant prayer etc., so that through purification of mind and body (catharsis), the life of God, given in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, will be expressed through the experience of the knowledge of God (theora). Thus, through catharsis and theora, man can increasingly participate in the divine nature to finally arrive at a union with God to the degree that in Christ, God became one with humanity.

At their level of understanding this wasn’t something that happened at salvation but an ongoing process that is consummated at the resurrection in the coming kingdom. Though it hardly resulted in the certainty of attaining total divine union in the present life, it was a very great place to begin with. Hallelujah!

Dear Father, thank You for the foundation of the doctrine of theosis, for by it, the body of Christ experienced to a great degree the washing in truth, in Jesus’ Name.

Topic: NO CONFUSION WITH YAHWEH

Exodus 6:3 “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them”

Message:
The principle of progressive revelation is clearly scriptural though it doesn’t mean from “inferior” truth to “better” truth. It simply means the mosaic of divine information keeps getting clearer as He reveals more to us. As simple as this is, without understanding it, many sons and daughters of God unnecessarily ‘fight’ with each other.

Yes, the flock of Christ must be protected from falsehood, but it is important to always be clear about what one refers to as falsehood. Is it falsehood because that is not what is revealed to you? Could it be because it is truth for a certain stage of maturity which you have not yet attained, or is it really scripturally false? Apostle John wrote a lot to protect the church from falsehood (1 John 4), but He was clear that there are grades of the same truth for little children, young men and mature (1 John 2:12-13). This is the same thing Yahweh revealed through Moses in our opening verse.

This week we are going to look at three dimensions of understanding our union with God in Christ as the body of Christ progressed in history. Whether it is the orthodox theosis, the protestant sanctification or the divinity of sons of God, there is no confusion with Yahweh. Are you ready?

Thank You, Father, that we are one body of Christ, in one Father by the one Holy Spirit and there is no confusion with You. Hallelujah!

Topic: WE HONOUR OUR SHEPHERDS IN THE KINGDOM

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NLT) “Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord's work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other”

Message :
You must recognize the family nature of the kingdom and church. Our Father is Yahweh, we are brethren in the one body of Christ our Lord, and He has given us people gifts in our ministers of God and leaders. One characteristic that makes you stand out in the kingdom and keeps you always fresh in grace is honouring your shepherd. God is a God of order and in His wisdom has given various gifts to His people (Ephesians 4:11) who will equip them. Although you have the same life of God as your pastor, apostle, teacher or prophet, you are wise when you recognize that by virtue of the office, they have been called into, they deserve special honour. Our scripture today tells us to show great respect towards them. Be circumspect in your speech with and about them. Recognize that they are accountable to God for you (Hebrews 13:17) and so do not make their work difficult. Love them genuinely and be ready to serve when called upon. A kingdom-cultured child of God is never bereft of grace when he honours his shepherd.

Declaration
I declare that I am never bereft of grace because I genuinely love and honour my shepherd. Hallelujah!

Topic: WE LOVE SINCERELY IN THE KINGDOM

1 Peter 1:22 “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently”

Message
Love is our nature as sons of God, and it is also a responsibility we owe to everyone, especially those of the household of God. Love must be the foundation for every action and act of service. Manifesting love is not a struggle because we are born of love (1 John 4:7-8).

Our new heavenly birth brings us into the family of God. Other members of the body are our real brothers and sisters because we have one Father. Be thoughtful and considerate of the brethren. Live in peace, promote unity and put the “needs” of others before yours (Romans 12:10). This is unfeigned love.
Remember that you are part of the body and so if one part is “suffering”, you are affected. Praying for other Christians is a simple but powerful way of living in love. You cannot dislike someone you genuinely pray for.

PRAYER
Dear Father, I pray for the sons of God around the world, that we will live in love with one another, showing the world the beauty of our kingdom in Jesus’ name.

Topic: WE SERVE IN THE KINGDOM

Ephesians 4:12 “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”

Message :
Contrary to what some people think, the work of the ministry is not limited to pastors, apostles, prophets, evangelists, and teachers. Every child of God is a minister and must do the work of the ministry. The apostle, pastor, etc., are gifts given to the body of Christ to train and equip us for ministry.

The work of the ministry is whatever we, as individuals and as a church, are enabled and directed by the Holy Spirit, through our structured leadership, to do as our contribution to the corporate calling in fulfilment of purpose.

Broadly, these are categorized as ministering to the Lord (Acts 13:2), ministering to the church (Ephesians 4:16), and ministering to the world (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15).

A kingdom-cultured son of God is an active minister and not a pew warmer. He contributes meaningfully to the spread of the gospel through prayer, preaching, and partnership and avails himself to contribute earnestly to the building of the body through service in the house of God.
This keeps you relevant in the kingdom.

I affirm that I am relevant in the kingdom. I actively engage in the work of ministry by ministering to the Lord, to the church, and to my world, in Jesus’ Name.
