I follow and am friends with many ministers—both those who know the Gospel and those who may not know much of the Gospel. However, there are specific traits that, when I see them in a minister, make me keep my distance. As a principle, I dissociate myself from such ministers.
1. Ministers who do not hold the Scriptures as their final authority.
I do not bother following them because we can never truly agree. My authority is the Scriptures, revealed in context, as it should be for every truth seeker.
I cannot flow with those who rely on the Scriptures only when the Scriptures agree with them, but rubbish them when they contradict their opinions or preferences.
2. Ministers who teach against miracles, healings, prophecy, and the supernatural, or teach that they are irrelevant.
Firstly, because they are teaching contrary to the Word of God.
Secondly, because if I follow them, miracles, healings, and the supernatural will eventually cease in my life and ministry.
Thirdly, because the attitude of teaching against certain gifts simply because one does not operate in them is not Christlike and doesn't reveal good intentions.
3. Ministers who only teach but are not open to correction.
Nobody is all-knowing. Many times, we would all need corrections. It's only a proud person who hates correction. The bible reveals that God resists the proud.
If I follow such ministers long enough, I could be swept up in their pride and delusions.
As a principle, even if such ministers know the Gospel, I don't follow them.
My friend, being principled about who you follow will go a long way in shaping your life and ministry.
Have standards and principles concerning who you allow to influence you. It will go a long way toward safeguarding your life and ministry.
