DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR ERRING CHILD

1. A child is a gift. The speciality of this gift rests on the fact that it comes from God. It is God who gives children. If God offers you a gift, He has an intention. God doesn't just give for giving sake, He gives with purpose and meaning. While some parents are happy with the gift of their children, others aren't for obvious reasons.

2. I ask:

•As a parent, how do you relate with your “stubborn” child(ren)?

•Have you given up on your child(ren)?

•How are you managing the behaviour of your child(ren) as a parent?

•Which words do you use as a parent for your erring child(ren)?

•As a parent, do you believe that despite the negative comments made about your child(ren), something positive can emerge?

For answers to these questions, let's turn our attention to St. Monica, whose memorial is celebrated today (27-8-2026).

3. St. Monica was born in Northern Africa (Thagaste, Algeria) in the year 331. This origin confirms the role of Africa in the Christian religion. It reminds us of the fact that Africa has contributed in the past, Africa is still contributing, and Africa will contribute greatly in the future. Today, the Church in Africa has every cause to celebrate.

4. St. Monica married Patricius, a non-Christian, with whom she had these children: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua.

•Lesson: You need not be a Priest or a Religious before you become a saint. If a married woman (Monica) is a Saint, you too can become a saint.

5. As a married woman, St. Monica didn’t have it easy, especially with her pagan husband, who was abusive.

•Sadly, this is the order of the day in some marriages. The situation is that, it’s not only husbands who abuse wives. No! Some wives also abuse their husbands. These abuses include physical harm, insults, etc.

•Today, we implore couples to learn from this situation. Abuses in marriage solve nothing. The hands that are used in hurting should be used in assisting a worthy cause. The mouth that is used in insulting should be used in commending a partner.

6. St. Monica was a woman of charity. She was a woman who freely gave. She was a woman who was there for the other person. She was a woman of sacrifice.

•The sad reality is that selfishness seems to be the order of the day. The world is now “I or me.” There is nothing like “he, she or they.”

•Today, St. Monica calls our attention to be there for the other person. She tells us that we need not have everything before we show love. In your inadequacy, you can still offer a part of that to someone without anything. Give freely. Give joyfully. Give with good intentions.

7. St. Monica converted her husband to the Christian faith.

•I ask: When did you become a Christian? How many soul(s) have you led to Jesus? How many soul(s) have abandoned the faith because of you?

•Today, St. Monica shows us the way. She tells us of what we are to do.

8. The subject of St. Augustine in relation to St. Monica is amazing. For 17 solid years, St. Monica prayed for her "stubborn" son, which eventually led to his conversion. St. Monica didn't give up, but she persevered till the end.

•I ask again: Do you have a child(ren) who is(are) giving you “problems?” Have you given up already on your child(ren)?

This message is from St. Monica:

•Never give up on your child(ren) no matter the situation.

•The mouth with which you use to curse your child(ren), use it to pray for your child(ren).

•As you rebuke your erring child(ren), commend them for a good work done.

•Set good examples for your child(ren).

9. Finally, please find below the prayer of St. Monica:

•Dear St. Monica, troubled wife and mother, many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime. Yet, you never despaired or lost faith. With confidence, persistence, and profound faith, you prayed daily for the conversion of your beloved husband, Patricius, and your beloved son, Augustine; your prayers were answered. Grant me that same fortitude, patience, and trust in the Lord. Intercede for me, dear St. Monica, that God may favourably hear my plea for (mention your intention here) and grant me the grace to accept His will in all things. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

JESUS IS ANGRY: PART 2

1. Jesus is angry. The Lord is not a happy person. Jesus is sad. In fact, the Lord doesn't hide His disappointment. Jesus plainly speaks His mind. The Lord freely expresses that which is within Himself.

2. You may ask: Where from this anger of Jesus? Who did what to Jesus? Who said what to Jesus? Was it as a result of the action of the Apostles? Was it as a result of the action of the parents of Jesus? God the Father? God the Holy Spirit?

Let's continue......

3. In ancient Israel, there were institutions such as the Scribes, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, etc. These were the leaders of the people. They had the power of influence. They told people what to do. In fact, the public looked up to these leaders.

4. With time, these leaders engaged in deeds that were questionable. The good that was expected of them, they didn't do it. The evil that wasn't expected of them, they embraced it. You may call it leadership failure.

5. It is worth noting that Jesus uses the words "woe" and "hypocrite" on two occasions:

•"Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites" (Matthew 23:27).

•"Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites" (Matthew 23:29).

6. At this point, a biblical interpretation of "woe" and "hypocrite" would help us to comprehend the matter.

•In the New Testament, the Greek expression for "woe" is οὐαὶ (ouai) which means "disaster, horror, or terrible."

•In the New Testament, the Greek expression for "hypocrite" is ὑποκριταί (hüpokritai) which means "one who pretends to be other than he really is."

7. You may ask: Why is Jesus using these expressions (woe and hypocrite) for the Scribes and the Pharisees? What at all did the Scribes and Pharisees do? Where did they go? What did they say? Check these:

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleannesses (Matthew 23:27).

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity (Matthew 23:28).

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets’ (Matthew 23:29-30).

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers (Matthew 23:31-32).

8. Finally, many years ago, Jesus wasn't happy with the Scribes and the Pharisees. The Lord wasn't pleased with the leaders of religion. Jesus didn't spare them at all. The Lord “gave” it to them "well well."

•Today (26-8-2026), what will this same Jesus say about modern leadership? Will the Lord commend leadership or He will do to leadership what He did to the leadership of old?

JESUS IS ANGRY

1. If a person repeatedly uses a word in a conversation, it means that there is something that the person wants to emphasize.

2. Today's Gospel reading is taken from Matthew 23:23-26. Out of these four verses, the words "woe" and "hypocrite" appear not less than twice in the text:

•Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites (Matthew 23:23)!

•Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites (Matthew 23:25)!

3. It is worth noting these:

•The Greek expression for "woe" is οὐαὶ (ouai) which means "disaster, horror, or terrible."

•The Greek expression for "hypocrite" is ὑποκριταί (hüpokritai) which means "one who pretends to be other than he really is."

4. You may ask: Why is Jesus using these expressions for the Scribes and the Pharisees? What at all did the Scribes and Pharisees do? Where did they go? What did they say? Check these:

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith (Matthew 23:23).

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) are blind guides (Matthew 23:24).

•You (Scribes and Pharisees) cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity (Matthew 23:25).

5. From the above (especially no. 4), it is clear that Jesus isn't happy. Jesus is sad. Jesus is angry. Jesus is disappointed with these leaders of religion. Jesus doesn't spare the Scribes and the Pharisees. Jesus "gives it to them" "well well."

6. Today (25-8-2026), what will this same Jesus say about the leaders of religion? Will the Lord commend them or will He do to them what He did to the leaders of old?

7. To please the Lord, I propose these:

•Pray for the grace of leadership.

•Be a good leader.

•Let God guide you as a leader.

•Pray daily for the gift of wisdom as a leader.

•Exercise the wisdom of God in leadership.

•Don't neglect important details as a leader.

•Avoid hypocrisy as a leader.

SOMETHING GOOD CAN COME OUT OF YOU

1. Once upon a time, Bartholomew was led to Jesus by Philip. That is, he didn't go to Jesus on his own. Someone initiated a process that yielded results.

•Today (24-8-2026), imitate Philip. Lead a person to Jesus. If you do this, Jesus will also lead you to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

2. Bartholomew left everything and followed the Lord. He did not delay. He didn't consider the cost nor the loss. His desire was simply to follow Jesus. He could have made nonsense of this invitation, but he didn't.

•What does this tell you? To follow Jesus, there is something you must leave behind. If you don't do this, you can't follow the Lord. The question you must ask yourself today is this: What must I detach myself from in order to follow Jesus?

3. Bartholomew did not just follow Jesus. He made Him known. According to tradition, he went to places such as India, Armenia, etc, to proclaim the Word of God. Interestingly, he was able to convert Polymius, the King of Armenia, to the Christian faith.

•I ask: When did you become a Christian? How many soul(s) have you won for Jesus? How many soul(s) have abandoned the faith because of you? When was the last time you spoke about Jesus to someone?

•Like Bartholomew, you have a role to play in evangelisation. You are to proclaim the Word. You are to make Jesus known. You need not be a Priest, Religious, Seminarian, etc, before you make Jesus known. The reality is that you can't evangelise when you haven't been evangelised yourself. To preach the Word, Jesus (The Word) must already be in your heart.

4. "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" This is a disparaging remark from Bartholomew to Philip.

•Why the disrespect to the origin of Jesus, you may ask? If Bartholomew were to come from Nazareth, would he have spoken like this? Why can't anything good come from Nazareth?

•Sadly, we live in a world in which people from some places are still looked down upon. They aren't respected. Nobody gives them value.

•Today, let us not be like Bartholomew, who didn't see anything good come out of Nazareth. Let's identify the good in people and promote them and not engage in negative reactions.

5. Bartholomew, who initially couldn't see any good thing from Nazareth, now refers to Jesus as the Rabbi, the Son of God, the King of Israel. His encounter with Jesus changed his perception. Out of humility, he accepted his errors and he made up for his ignorance.

•This is the message: If you make mistakes, accept corrections; if you don't want to accept corrections, then avoid making mistakes.

6. Having converted Polymius (The King of Armenia) to Christianity, Astyges (the brother of the king) ordered the ex*****on of Bartholomew. This explains why, liturgically we are using red today. This is how Bartholomew died: His skin was cut into strips, and after bleeding for a long time, he was beheaded. Just imagine how painful this death is. Why do we do this to ourselves? Where are our minds? This painful death of Bartholomew is indicative of the following:

•Following Jesus comes with a cost. The good news is that there is a handsome reward beyond the pain. Ask Bartholomew and he will tell you about it.

•Bartholomew is a man of courage. Faced with the threat of death, he still said yes to Jesus. He wasn't intimidated, never afraid. Today, Bartholomew tells us to be bold, to be courageous and not to be afraid.

•Where was God when Bartholomew was in pain? Why did God not save Bartholomew from this painful death? Was God "powerless?" This is the reality of life. Sometimes, life could be hard to the point of asking where God is. The bitter truth is that, in pain, the Lord is with you; in sorrow, God is with you. You are never alone.

•To those who killed Bartholomew, where were their consciences? What were they thinking about? If this action were meted out to them, their relations, etc, would they like it? Why do to someone what you don't want done to you?

I end by telling you this: Something good can come out of you.
