tas Ghana (See NCS Restructuring Document Pages 11 &16). Caritas Ghana works in seven thematic areas namely; Social Development, Livelihood promotion, Social services, Promotion of Social and Environmental Justice, Public Policy Advocacy, Promotion of Pro-poor policies and Action Research. Work on public policy advocacy on behalf of the poor and the promotion of the common good is central to Caritas Ghana. Other high level advocacy initiatives of Caritas Ghana include the launch of a campaign on the ‘Right to Food’ as part of the Caritas Internationalis global campaign. Presently, Caritas Ghana is registered in Ghana as a Non-governmental Organization with the Registrar of Companies under the Registrar General’s Department of Ghana with a certificate of incorporation and a certificate to commence business.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION
January 24, 2026
On the occasion of the International Day of Education, Caritas Ghana reaffirms education as a fundamental human right and calls attention to persistent barriers to equitable access to university education in Ghana . While acknowledging the government’s laudable policy of fully covering first-year university fees for fresh students, the statement highlights that many learners, especially continuing students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, still face serious challenges.
Key concerns include the scarcity of scholarships beyond the first year, severe shortages of affordable on-campus hostels, and rising costs in the private rental market, often exceeding tuition fees. Additional financial pressures stem from expensive learning materials, transportation costs, and long commuting distances. These burdens force many families into debt and place students at risk of dropping out, thereby undermining the principle of equitable access to higher education.
Caritas Ghana urges expanded scholarship schemes for continuing students, increased investment in affordable university hostels, access to reasonably priced learning materials, improved transportation infrastructure, and strengthened financial literacy and support programs. The organization concludes by calling on stakeholders to ensure that higher education in Ghana remains a right for all, not a privilege for a few.
This celebration also coincides with Catholic Education Week, observed across the length and breadth of all the Catholic schools in Ghana, and serves as a clarion call to all education stakeholders to confront the growing menace of examination malpractices that undermine the integrity of student assessment.
It is, therefore, imperative for stakeholders to reimagine and recommit to the three core goals of education: training the head (knowledge acquisition), the hands (skills development), and the heart (attitude and values formation), the latter standing paramount among the three.
True education shapes minds, equips skills, and forms values for life.

Caritas Ghana participated in a 3-day intensive training workshop facilitated by the Department of Children (DoC), Child Labour Unit (CLU), and the Department of Community Development (DoCD) of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Protection.

The training, which was held at ARUBA Hotel at Gyankama near Kitase via Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana, from the 17th to 20th of November, 2025, brought together Civil Society Organizations, Government Agencies and UN Agencies to deepen their knowledge and practical skills in key child protection thematic areas.

Participants received hands-on training in:

The sessions were highly interactive, combining presentations, group work, tool practice, demonstrations, and games, all aimed at strengthening CSOs’ capacity to deliver quality child protection services.

Participants were also introduced to the CP Toolkit Minimum Package, SOPs, and the Monitoring & Reporting App, enhancing their ability to document and respond to child protection concerns effectively.

Together, we continue to build safer, supportive, and resilient environments for children across our communities.

“Love for the poor is not an add-on to Christianity — it’s the heartbeat of our faith.” Pope Leo XIV’s first apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te is a stirring call to action for justice, dignity, and solidarity with the marginalized.
Liam Finn’s article captures the essence of this powerful message, highlighting the Church’s enduring mission to serve migrants, women, and those living in poverty — not just through charity, but by dismantling systems of exclusion.

New E-Waste Collection Centre Launched in Ashaiman, Greater Accra!
Caritas Ghana, under the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, has opened an electronic waste collection centre at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Ashaiman. This event came off on Thursday, the 10th of July, 2025. This is part of Caritas Ghana’s Social Impact Investment (SII) programme to tackle hazardous e-waste and promote environmental justice.
The initiative complements existing plastic waste centres in Wa, Goaso, Cape Coast, Tamale and Accra. Stakeholders, including government agencies (MESTI-PIU, E-Waste Fund), GIZ and the scrap dealers association have pledged support to ensure sustainability and proper waste ethics.
Thanks to St. Augustine’s Parish for releasing a land space to have the collection centre installed on their premises, to the government agencies and GIZ for their support and to the media for their coverage.
Let’s all take responsibility for a cleaner, safer environment!
