Introducing our first nominee for the WORLDWIDE VETS GOLDEN STAR AWARD.

To vote for her, share this photo and tell us why you think she deserves to be this year's Golden Star. Don't forget to follow Worldwide Vets to keep up to date with the award.

Akosua Kumi Nyarko a final year vet student from Ghana was nominated because “Living in a country where matters of animal health is not so much of a priority, she has established herself as a champion of animal health through volunteering, public education and veterinary outreaches. This year, she led the organization of world rabies day in the country under the auspices of the non-profit called “Rabies in West Africa.” The activities she spearheaded included community education on rabies and other zoonotic diseases and mass anti-rabies vaccination for dogs with the deprived areas of La Dadekotopon Municipality of Ghana. She conceived and birthed a community veterinary outreach dubbed “The Animal Aider Project (TAAP)” which is piloting outreaches in underserved communities in Accra this year with the hope of expanding to other parts of the country in the nearest future”

Akosua says:

“My time in vet school and through my contacts with people, I realised that our nation needed to do more to educate people about zoonosis, responsible pet ownership, the human-animal bond, and the need of caring for animals and their health. I decided to lead the charge in redefining veterinary medicine in Ghana. I began sharing educational resources, images of vet school life, educational discussion shows, and other content on my Instagram feed (). For my birthday in 2021, I organised a fundraiser towards rabies elimination and donated the money to Rabies In West Africa – GH (RIWA-GH). …No animal should ever be left behind, regardless of where they are, and I will use every chance I can to volunteer my time to public education. It is a privilege to be nominated for this award, and I will be inspired to work harder and achieve my ambitions”

If you know a Golden Star, why not nominate them. The winner will be granted £250 to a charity of their choice and a further £500 prize. Entries close 20th of December and the winner will be announced in January.
