THE PROCESSES OF MENTORSHIP. (Part 4)
This lesson is to help us understand what goes on in mentorship.
1. Coaching: In coaching, the mentor/teacher guides the mentee/student, through teachings and by example, how to conduct himself/herself, and work to achieve results. Psalm 32:8-9. The mentor should make sufficient time for this responsibility and discharge it wholeheartedly. A great leader is the one who has prepared a substitute like himself or better than himself to take over from him. Jesus said, the works I do you will do, and even greater works than these you will do because, I go to the Father. In other words, He is saying that when I'm done with my assignment and left, you'll be capable to do what I have done, and even better. Jesus is the greatest leader that ever lived.
Moses raised Joshua to complete the assignment he couldn't finished. Elijah equipped Elisha to perform twice the miracles he did. Mentors should understand that, they will not be there forever.
2. Learning: The mentee/student should be willing to submit to the tutorship of their mentors and learn. Jesus said learn of me for I am meek......
Yes, the mentee may be highly intellectual. However there is something unique you need to learn in the new phase of your life. For instance, you may be a PHD holder in a secular discipline and have received a call into the christian ministry, you'll need someone to mentor you afresh. As was in the case of Paul.
3. Impartation: This is the most important aspect on mentorship. This is when the spirit of grace working in the mentor is transfered to the mentee. All the coaching, learning, etc. is of little importance without the transfer of the spirit.
Moses laid his hand upon Joshua at the end of his ministry, and it was said that Joshua was filled with wisdom because of that single act.
Elijah asked Elisha, at the end of his ministry, what should I do for you? And Jesus, breathed on His disciples to receive the Spirit after His resurrection.
Notice that, all this impartation were done at the end of the mentors' ministries!
Please, this experience is different from the general infilling of the Holy Spirit.
2 Timothy 1:6-7.
