REWARDS FOR OVERCOMERS

KEY VERSE: "Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." - (Revelation 3:12).

TEXT: Revelation 3:7-13

Peter Drucker, renowned management and leadership expert, told the story of "a young man (who) once studied violin under a world-renowned master. Eventually, the time came for his first recital. The performer seemed dissatisfied after each selection despite the crowd's cheers. Even after the last number, with shouts louder than ever, the talented violinist stood watching an older man on the balcony. Finally, the elderly one smiled and nodded in approval. Immediately, the young man relaxed and beamed with happiness. The applause of the crowd meant nothing to him until he had first won the hearty approval of his famous teacher. So, too, the Christian must do all he does looking for God's approval and in that, be rewarded. Let the task be the reward."

The Philadelphia church in Asia Minor, one of the seven churches addressed in the book of Revelation, faced persecution from false assemblies claiming to be Jews. Despite this, the church remained faithful and received commendation and assurance from Christ. Although the church would continue to face persecution, it was encouraged to remain faithful unto death and would receive a crown of life. Though not materially wealthy, the church was rich in faith, grace, and righteousness, and did not compromise its beliefs by adopting the practices of idolatrous assemblies claiming to be churches of God. The Philadelphia church stood firm in its faith, resisting corruption and remaining true to the teachings of Christ.

This timeless and universal message speaks directly to contemporary believers and assemblies today. Our commitment and loyalty to Christ and His word must be steadfast and incomparable to any other allegiance. Despite our trials, temptations and persecutions, the Lord expects us to remain faithful to the end. The promised crown for overcomers and Christ's commendation await only those who overcome sin, temptations, trials, the world, the flesh, the devil and all his tricks. A songwriter captures what our resolve and determination should be when he wrote, "Go labour on! 'tis not for nought; Thy earthly loss is heav'nly gain; Men heed thee, love thee, praise thee not; The Master praises, what are men?"

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Overcomers' rewards are for true overcomers.

MUTUAL LOVE

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 4:1-3

KEY VERSE: "Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved" (PHILIPPIANS 4:1).

Francis Charles, a religious poet who lived in England between 1592 and 1644, extols the indispensable virtue of love when he says, "If thou neglectest thy love to thy neighbour, in vain thou professest thy love to God; for by thy love to God, the love of thy neighbour is begotten, and by love to thy neighbour thy love to God is nourished." This profound statement reflects love's central place in Christendom, as espoused and demonstrated in the Scripture.
In this passage, Apostle Paul sets a pattern of affection and love that should exist between ministers and members of their churches and denominations. While familiarity should not lead to disrespect or disregard, a warm and vibrant fellowship should exist amongst God's people in the church. His affection for the church in Philippi is reflected in the epistle.

Leaders and church members should ensure a balanced and holy fellowship with one another. We must have a heartfelt and lively interaction devoid of sensuality. Leaders of God's people should be interested in the minutest details about their lives, knowing when followers are absent, sick, bereaved, hungry, and showing genuine concern to alleviate those challenges.
The high point of Apostle Paul's humble disposition towards other labourers in the vineyard is that he never considered them inferior. Even though he was an apostle of note, he addressed them as fellow labourers whose names are in the book of life. Following the Apostle's example, we are to serve one another in humility, and our brethren must not be belittled because of their lowly estate but be given a sense of belonging. We must also sacrificially labour to rescue and win the lost, and warn the righteous while keeping ourselves in the love of God, awaiting His coming.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Love is the defining feature of our Christian profession.

THE PURSUIT OF THE HEAVENLY-MINDED

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:17-21

KEY VERSE: "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ" (PHILIPPIANS 3:20).

Seeking to convey the unique attributes of heaven and what it will take to get there, one prominent minister of God said, "Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people, and they that enter shall find that they are either unknown or unexpected."

In today's passage, Paul presents himself and his associates as examples. He admonishes the Philippian Christians to follow them as models. Their pursuit must be heaven, and they should not be deterred by the inglorious harbingers of destruction, whose God is their belly. He expressed deep concern over their avaricious activities at the cost of the pure gospel, classifying them as enemies of the cross. He wept over their sinful conduct.

Deep concerns of this nature are common to all godly people, particularly servants of God down the ages. The Lord Jesus Himself wept over Jerusalem (Luke 13:34). However, the old tears and lamentation over hypocrisy, licentiousness, heresies, and false prophecies have long been replaced by frivolity and permissiveness on the altars of many assemblies. Immorality is now considered a weakness and, therefore, tolerated. Passion for souls has been replaced by love for money. The earnest agonising prayers for the manifestations of the fruit and gifts of the Spirit for effectiveness in ministry have been overtaken by oratory; all couched in the philosophy of men and the power of the flesh.

Our hope as saints, however, transcends this present age. We are citizens of the heavenly city whose builder and maker is God. This assurance anchors our faith in trials, tests, persecutions, denials, and deprivations. Amid tribulations, let us labour more to strengthen weaker believers, help the fallen, admonish the discouraged, and run after prodigal sons. Relentlessly, let's unite and fight to overthrow the foundations of falsehood and heresies by faith in the all-conquering name of Jesus Christ. Do not give up. Your labour shall be rewarded. Hold on to the truth, stand for what is right, and earnestly contend for the faith.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If you are heaven-bound, it will reflect in the way you relate to the present world.

THE PRIZE OF OUR HIGH CALLING

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 3:13-16

KEY VERSE: "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (PHILIPPIANS 3:14).

Many are familiar with the inspiring story of Nick Vujicic, born without limbs. Not many, however, know how he has continued to push aside the burdens and challenges of his disabilities to become a great instrument of inspiration and ambassador of the gospel. Nick faced tremendous challenges and bullying during his childhood but did not allow that to deter him, as his faith led him to become an international motivational speaker and evangelist, inspiring millions with his message of hope and resilience. He elevated his spirit above his body. He has turned the privilege of receiving the gospel and this high calling into a tool that has enabled him to transform his trials into triumphs and become a blessing to millions worldwide.

The Christian calling was not and cannot be procured on the altar of mental and secular appointments. It does not crumble under physical disability or mental weakness. Described variously in Scripture as a high, holy and heavenly calling, it implies that believers' choice and assignment in Kingdom service emanate from a greater power and elevated platform. It comes with a total package that eliminates sin, carelessness and frivolities. It blesses us with freedom from sin, holiness, a consistent, blameless life and walk with God. This high calling, however, demands Christians to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, consecrated and committed to remaining faithful to our Lord and Master.

Despite his eloquent testimonies of success and achievement in God's service, Apostle Paul refused to be complacent and took nothing for granted. He expressed an undying passion for heaven and the service of the Lord. Hence, he said, "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." What a lesson! What an example! We must appreciate our calling as believers and strive daily, labouring in His vineyard and praying that the Lord will plant our feet on higher ground every day. This will enable us to run this race successfully to the end and win the ultimate prize by God's grace.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The pursuit of heaven's goal requires absolute consecration.

OUR PROMISE-KEEPING GOD

KEY VERSE: "The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne." - (Psalm 132:11).

TEXT: Psalm 132:11-18

C.S. Lewis in his biography tells of the suffering he endured because he kept a promise he had made to a buddy during World War 1. This friend was worried about the care of his wife and small daughter if he should be killed in battle, so Lewis assured him that if that were to happen he would look after them. As the war dragged on, the man was killed. True to his word, Lewis took care of his friend's family. Yet no matter how helpful he tried to be, the woman was ungrateful, rude, arrogant, and domineering. Through it all, Lewis kept forgiving her. He refused to let her actions become an excuse to renege on his promise.

God made promises to preserve David's royal line and bless his kingdom if his descendants obeyed His covenant. The descendants of David would continue to rule and enjoy God's presence, with physical and spiritual prosperity. Despite their disobedience leading to the end of their dynasty, these promises have a prophetic dimension pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate King who will rule in righteousness forever, as Peter referenced in his message at Pentecost.

The passage emphasises that God is faithful and His promises are unbreakable, as indicated by the phrase "the Lord has sworn in truth." The writer of Hebrews explains that God reinforces His promises with an oath, showing the unchanging nature of His counsel. This unbreakable aspect of God's promises should provide us with comfort and security in our journey of faith. The passage underscores the reliability and certainty of God's word, assuring us that we can safely trust Him.

The promises made to David in the Bible are fulfilled in Christ, who has chosen believers and promised to always be with them. God dwells within believers through the Holy Spirit and provides abundant provisions and sustenance for the poor. While challenges may still arise, believers can trust in God's care and provision. His promises also include spiritual blessings such as salvation, righteousness, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Those who repent and have faith in Jesus Christ are assured of victory and eternal reign with the Lord. These promises are like open cheques, requiring faith and obedience to claim them and bring joy to those who follow the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God is faithful, His promises cannot fail.

BUILDING A HABITATION FOR GOD

KEY VERSE: "I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids. Until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob." (Psalm 132:4,5).

TEXT: Psalms 132:4-10

An architectural magazine once reported the amazing story of members of a Presbyterian church in Iowa, United States, who constructed a new church building out of a single large rock. Stone was scarce, and while looking for a possible quarry, their attention was drawn to this huge boulder that stood in the middle of a plain about eight miles from the town. This mass of rock was like an island amid a vast sea. About eight feet of it projected above ground. The work of excavating this gigantic boulder was at once begun. When exposed to view, it was found to be twenty-eight feet high, thirty feet long, and twenty feet wide. On this monolith, the workmen began their labour with drill, hammer, and dynamite, and the enormous rock was converted into building stones, which were removed from the town and built into a beautiful church.

When David became king, he built a grand palace for himself but felt troubled that the Ark of the Covenant was still in a tent. This led him to lose sleep until he decided to correct this situation. When he asked God to remember his afflictions, he was actually asking to be reminded of his distress over the ark's placement. He made a vow not to live comfortably in his palace until he built a temple for the ark. This contrasts with the prophet who criticised the Israelites for living lavish lives while neglecting God's house. David's actions show his dedication to honouring God and ensuring that the symbol of His presence among His people was appropriately housed.

From the life of David, we learn that we must live so close to God that we become restless until His will is accomplished through us. We should not be comfortable living in our beautiful houses when the church of God is in shambles. Besides, God wants to dwell in us as His actual temples. The sinful world about us is our quarry. With the hammer of God's word, the dynamite of the Holy Spirit, and earnest human hearts, we can convert the stony nature around us into beautiful building stones for the temple of God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The believer's heart is God's most cherished temple of habitation.

A CALL TO PRAISE AND WORSHIP

KEY VERSE: "Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding." - (Psalm 47:6,7).

TEXT: Psalms 47:1-7

The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve under. He was brilliant, demanding, and not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realised that his methods left something to be desired. In his old age, a young lady asked him what, if anything, he would do differently if he had his life to live over again. Wellington thought for a moment, then replied, "I'd give more praise". (Bits & Pieces, March 31, 1994, p. 24).

The book of Psalms is Israel's songbook covering different themes as we have in our modern hymn books today. The forty-seventh Psalm, in particular, calls all people to worship and praise God because He is King over the universe. The song's lyrics enjoin everyone to praise God cheerfully, openly, with enthusiasm and understanding. It also states the reasons for praising the Lord. We should praise Him because of His majesty, dominion over the universe, and all He has done for us. Significantly, the Israelites sang this Psalm at the beginning of their new year, expecting more incredible blessings and a better life.

This Psalm is Messianic. It predicts the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven after His victory on the cross. It looks ahead to when Jesus will set up His millennial reign on earth, and all people will be subject to Him. Thus, the call to praise is not only because of what God has done in the past but in anticipation of Christ's universal dominion in the millennium. The song envisions a time when all nations will worship the Lord, as indicated in the book of Revelation.

However, in the meantime, God is preparing the ground for the coming Kingdom. He is taking out a people for Himself from all tribes and languages of the earth. Are you one of the people God has taken out of this polluted world? To praise God meaningfully, you must first become His willing subject. Only those who submit themselves to the authority of Christ can truly call Him Lord and sing His praise effectively. Additionally, you must earnestly delight in and look forward to His coming Kingdom. Then, you should do all you can to make others submit to the lordship of Jesus, the coming King.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is a mockery to praise God with your lips while you reject His control over your life.
