ACHIEVING BALANCE

He took me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze. He had a line of flax and a measuring rod in his hand, and he stood in the gateway. — Ezekiel 40:3

A balance is “an even distribution of weight that enables something to remain steady.” There are two objects used to refer to balance in the scriptures. The measuring line is used to check that things are aligned and in order. The weighing scale looks at the scale of priority, weight or importance. To bring balance into your life, you need to determine what is important and what to do first. Three issues related to balance are:

• Purpose. What is your life all about? Why are you here?
• Priorities. What do you consider as most important?
• Pursuits. What are you running after in life?

While God’s purpose for your life may be clear, it can also be corrupted. Ecclesiastes 7:29 says, “Truly, this only I have found: that God made man upright, But they have sought out many schemes.” This is reflected in the three levels of purpose:

Intended Purpose. This is what God had in mind for you. You have been designed to execute an assignment. Your background, environment, parentage, temperament are all suited to who God wanted you to be.

Invented Purpose. What you have made out of the original purpose. This can be a digression from the original intent. You can invent new usages that may be good but outside God’s original purpose.

Inverted Purpose. This is abuse of God’s purpose. Samson’s intended purpose was evident from conception but he abused his gifting, strength and the call of God. The world system is redefining everything, but God’s people must hold on to His original purpose.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen me to walk in your intended purpose for my life.

THE GIFT OF DISCRETION

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. —Proverbs 25:11

There are people who seem to have a gift of knowing exactly what to say in every situation. It is amazing how Christ responded to the different situations and tests that confronted Him, especially from His enemies. A typical example was His response to the accusers of the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11. The accusers had prepared for every eventuality but Jesus’ answer totally discomfited them.

Discretion is “the quality of having or showing discernment or good judgment.” It is about being discreet or circumspect in speech. A discreet person knows what to say and what not to say in every situation. They know when silence is the best option. The tongue is a powerful tool for either building or destruction. It can affect relationships, organisations and even nations. A good word spoken at the right time with the right tone can set you up for life. It can end a crisis or rally people around a worthy cause. Conversely, a wrong word or mistimed comment can start a crisis or destroy what it has taken years to build.

One of King Solomon’s first assignments was to judge a complicated matter between two feuding mothers. One word settled the issue in favour of the right woman. His son Rehoboam’s first assignment as king was to deal with a request from his people to lessen their work and tax burden. He responded by insulting and threatening the people. One wrong word split the twelve-tribe kingdom and left him with two. Our words must be fitly spoken, appropriate and discreet.

Prayer: Lord, anoint my lips and grant me the wisdom to say only that which is appropriate and needful at every time.

FOLLOWING CLOSELY

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you.
—Psalms 32:8-9

The closer you are to someone, the easier it is to instinctively communicate with them. In many intimate relationships, a person can communicate with their partner in a crowd without uttering a word. An experienced participant in an auction will sometimes only wink and the auctioneer will get the signal and announce a new bid from them. In verse 8, God gives a threefold promise. I will instruct thee, I will teach thee and I will guide thee represent three properties of God as a good teacher.

To instruct is to make the people understand the way of salvation. To teach is to go before them and show them the way. God also says He will guide or direct us with His eye. The one pointing you to the next destination says he will watch over you, keep an eye on you and not let you go wrong. Servants take their cue from the master’s eye. Oftentimes, a nod or wink is all they need to know what exactly is required of them by the master. This calls for sensitivity to know what He is prompting us to do at every point.

The scripture, in apparent contrast, cautions us to avoid behaving like horses and mules that lack understanding and can only be moved or guided by coercion. Our ears must always be inclined to the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit. We must sense and obey the slightest nudge from Him without waiting for thunder, lightning or some other dramatic or painful prompting from Him.

Prayer: Lord, as I draw closer to you, may my ears be inclined to hear even when you whisper or wink.

STRATEGIC ASTUTENESS

Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” —Exodus 13:17

Strategy in the context of warfare is “the art of planning and directing overall military operations and movements in a war or battle.” Depending on your circumstances or situation, your best strategy in battle could be a direct attack, encircling the enemy or even retreating for a season to bounce back another time. Your strategy for an issue or battle that confronts you in life must be influenced by factors like timing, the size and resources of the opponent as well as your own stage or situation in life.

There are certain battles you must avoid at certain stages in your life. This is simply because you may not have built enough strength or capacity to fight them. Prematurely engaging in some kinds of warfare can lead to your getting overrun, decimated or even losing your desire to move forward. When Jesus was a child and Herod sought to kill him, an angel of God advised Joseph to flee with the family into Egypt.

When Israel left Egypt, they were exhausted from years of bo***ge and, therefore, militarily unprepared. In choosing their escape route to the promised land, God avoided the Philistine territories so they would not be caught up in unnecessary wars. Those same Philistines would later be defeated when Israel was more established as a military nation. Not every battle is worth fighting immediately. You need astuteness to know how to pick your battles and conserve energy for another day where necessary. It may mean having to take a longer route: that may sometimes be the wisest choice.

Prayer: Lord, may your wisdom guide my strategies and give me the advantage in every battle.

NUMBERING OUR DAYS

So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. —Psalms 90:12

This scripture is about purpose, perspective and time management. It is possible to run about every day without a sense of why we are here and what our biggest priorities in life should be. Life is fleeting and it is important for each of us to carefully consider the purpose for which God placed us here and apply ourselves to its fulfilment.

Moses urged us to count our days in order to gain a heart of wisdom. The psalmist reminds us that our lifespan is often 70 years or about 80 years. Without this consciousness, when you assume that you have unlimited time, you can dissipate your time, energy and resources on unproductive ventures. However, the heart of wisdom gives you a better appreciation of life and a commitment to account for each single day. Wisdom makes us count the years, months, weeks and days and utilise each of them judiciously or wisely. It also means a daily, weekly or monthly review to give account of our stewardship of time. No day is left to go waste.

The heart of wisdom also makes us more urgent and purposeful. Jesus stressed how the awareness of our mortality should create in us a sense of urgency. In John 9:4 He said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” This was a reminder that each of us has a limited time to execute the specific assignment given to us by God. We must therefore work diligently on it within the time we have, mindful of the fact that a time will come, which he calls the night, when no one can work.

Prayer: Lord, help me to live a fruitful and productive life each day.

ANOINTED, CONSECRATED AND SANCTIFIED

So you shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him. You shall anoint them, consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister to Me as priests. —Exodus 28:41

Aaron and his sons were marked out for the Lord’s service as priests. They were to be anointed, consecrated and sanctified for the Lord’s service. To ANOINT is “to ceremonially confer divine or holy office on someone by smearing or rubbing them with oil.” To CONSECRATE is “to make or declare something as sacred and dedicated to a religious or divine purpose.” To SANCTIFY is “to set something apart for holy use or to declare as pure and free from sin.”

All three words confirm that in order to walk with the Lord or minister before Him, we must separate or set ourselves apart from sin and purify our vessels for His holy use. It is not an option. It is a divine requirement. 1 Peter 2:9 reminds us that we are priests before the Lord. It says, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 makes the scriptural standard very clear. “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honour, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.” May your ears be open to God’s call to a royal priesthood, and may you be anointed, consecrated and sanctified for His service.

Prayer: Lord, I yield my body, soul and spirit to You. Set me apart for Your service.
