Mahama Ayariga has confirmed that the government’s gold purchase programme has recorded losses.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, the NDC MP argued that what many are describing as losses should rather be seen as the cost Ghana has had to bear to maintain the strength and stability of the cedi.

He further stated that even if the losses have increased, it is because the government has expanded the volume of gold being purchased under the programme.

In other words, Mahama Ayariga is not disputing that there are losses. His argument is that the losses are necessary costs incurred in the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy and strengthen the Ghanaian cedi.

The question, however, remains: If there are no losses, why is the government now explaining and defending them as the cost of stabilising the cedi?
