Title: Love For Vain gods.
"Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father's."
(Genesis 31:19).
Israel's greatest problem from the very beginning of the nation was a tendency to worship idols. When Jacob was returning to Canaan from Laban's house, the family came with idols stolen by Rachel. Jacob the great patriarch's family was bound by idolatry. Even after God freed them from four hundred years of Egyptian captivity, they were still bound by idolatry. They used the excuse of Moses's delay in the mountain to indulge in idolatry. "Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." (Exodus 32:1). They freely gave Aaron all their gold trinkets to make an idol. "So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf." (Exodus 32:3-4a).
This tendency to love idols was the root cause of Jezebel's hold on the land. Total deliverance could only come if Israel's love for idolatry was broken. God wanted to show Israel that their idols were really vain and worthless. "Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see" (Psalms 115:4-5).
Prayer: Father, render my enemies powerless, while I stand confidently trusting in You alone. Lord fill me with confidence, in Jesus' Name. Amen!
