Chosen by God

Modern writers depict the pessimism of our time and many of them throw up their hands in despair and say, “There is no answer to man’s dilemma.” Hemingway once said, “I live in a vacuum that is as lonely as a radio tube when the batteries are dead, and there is no current to plug into.” Eugene O’Neill in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” typifies the philosophical attitude of our day. He says, “Life’s only meaning is death.” I say to Hemingway and to O’Neill, who have already gone on, “There is more to life than death.” There is more to life than a radio tube that needs a place to plug into. Jesus taught us the dignity and importance of being a person. God put us on this earth for a purpose, and our purpose is fellowship with God and to glorify God.

Loving Father, Your love for me transcends the hopelessness of this life and gives me the purpose I so desperately need.

The Miracle Worker Please

So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake. 2 Kings 2:22

A miracle is a boost to a revival. It provides the launching pad and momentum in the drive for revival. Without miracles, signs and wonders, revival will not have an impactful bite. From the way Elisha turned the unpleasant situation of the city, it can be deduced that genuine miracles are not products of incantations or superfluous ceremonies. Our God is simple and does not require ceremonies in His worship.

The Bible is replete with great miracles performed by Jesus Christ, His disciples, or those who came before Him or after, just by the spoken Word. Believers must shun every act aimed at dramatising the wonders of God in the lives of people. The miracle of purifying water happened to establish Elisha as one through whom God worked. The prophet simply called on God to purify the waters and it was done immediately.

True servants of God know how they commune with Him. These days, we see more of drama than result. All through the ages, spoken words have always worked wonders. God has not changed and His words remain the same. Immediately after the miracle of water purification, some children began to mock Elisha. They began to jeer and sneer at the man of God. The children were old enough to assume responsibility for their disrespectful behaviour towards a man of God.

They reaped the consequences of their insults as they received immediate judgment pronounced on them by Elisha. Believing parents must train their children to be respectful. Our children must not be hooligans who follow miscreants to foment trouble in the streets. By the same token, we must trust God for miracles with simple faith, giving more allegiance to the Miracle Worker more than the transient miracles themselves.

Love Never Fails

Love never fails... (1 Corinthians 13:8, NIV)

We all have people in our lives that are difficult at times. Maybe it’s someone you work with, a family member or even your spouse. Relationships can be complicated, but remember: love never fails. The Word of God clearly defines love in 1 Corinthians 13. It says that love is patient and kind. It doesn’t seek its own way. Love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs. And most importantly, love never fails. Notice that this chapter doesn’t talk at all about how you feel. God’s love isn’t about feelings. It’s a choice. You can choose to be patient, even when you don’t feel like being patient. You can choose to be kind, even when you don’t feel like being kind.

No matter what situation you find yourself in, you can choose love. You are never more like God than when you are walking in love. And when you are walking in love, you will never fail because love never fails. Open your heart to God’s love today. Receive His love and ask Him to show you how to love others better because love never fails!

Father, thank You for Your love which never fails. Thank You for loving me so that I can be free to love others. Empower me, by Your Spirit, to walk in love no matter what I may face today in Jesus name. Amen.

MAKING YOUR MARRIAGE WORK I

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. Proverbs 31:10

It takes great commitment to make a marriage successful and blissful. This gift of God demands the commitment of those who are involved. The good thing is that the Bible is not silent on what couples must do to make their marriages work. I pray for couples reading this devotional; your marriage will be highly successful in Jesus’ name.

In our Bible reading for today, we are blessed with ur marriage work. The first one that catches our attention is the mutual submission between the husband and the wife. Both the husband and the wife must learn to mutually submit to one another. The reason is found in the first epistle of Paul to the Corinthians: “Let the husbnd render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.”1st Corinthians 7:3-4

Another principle that any woman who wants her marriage to succeed should imbibe is unconditional submission. This is the submission that does not attach any condition to compliance. This Christian wife must learn to submit to the husband. When she does this, she receives a blessing which money cannot buy from God. “For after this manner in the old time the holy woman also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, bring in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.” 1st Peter 3:5-6

It is dangerous for a woman to go into a marriage partnership with a man she will not submit herself to. It is better for such a woman not to get married at all. When the Word of God says, “Wives, submit….” Some people take this as a piece of advice. However, it is not a piece of advice, but an express command; it must be obeyed.

Feeling the Hurts of Others

He that loveth his brother abideth in the light...1 John 2:10

This age in which we live could hardly be described as conducive to a sensitiveness of the needs of others. We have developed a veneer of sophistication and hardness. Abraham Lincoln once said, characteristically, “I am sorry for the man who can’t feel the whip when it is laid on the other man’s back.” Much of the world is calloused and indifferent toward mankind’s poverty and distress. This is due largely to the fact that for many people there has never been a rebirth. The love of God has never been shed abroad in their hearts. Many people speak of the social gospel as though it were separate and apart from the redemptive Gospel. The truth is: there is only one Gospel. We must be redeemed, we must be made right with God before we can become sensitive to the needs of others. Divine love, like a reflected sunbeam, shines down before it radiates out.

Unless our hearts are conditioned by the Holy Spirit to receive and reflect the warmth of God’s compassion, we cannot love our fellowmen as we ought.

Help me to feel another person's hurt and be concerned, Father, so that I may shed the light of Your love in an uncaring world.
