SERMON: FORGIVENESS AND THE DANGER OF UNFORGIVENESS
Main Scripture
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” — Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV)
Introduction
Forgiveness is one of the greatest commands God has given to mankind. Many people pray, fast, worship, and preach, yet they carry bitterness, anger, hatred, and pain in their hearts. Unforgiveness is a silent destroyer. It blocks prayers, destroys relationships, and separates people from God.
Jesus Christ showed us the greatest example of forgiveness when He died on the cross.
“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” — Luke 23:34
If Jesus could forgive those who crucified Him, then we also must forgive those who hurt us.
WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?
Forgiveness means letting go of anger, bitterness, revenge, and pain against someone who offended you.
It means releasing the person into God’s hands and refusing to carry hatred in your heart.
Forgiveness does not mean what they did was right. It means you choose peace over bitterness.
WHY MUST WE FORGIVE?
1. God Commanded Us to Forgive
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32
Forgiveness is not optional for believers. It is a command from God.
2. Because God Forgave Us
We were sinners, yet Jesus died for us.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
If God forgave our sins, we also must forgive others.
3. Forgiveness Brings Peace
Many people are suffering emotionally because they refuse to forgive.
“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” — Psalm 119:165
Forgiveness removes heavy burdens from the heart.
THE EFFECTS OF UNFORGIVENESS
1. Unforgiveness Blocks Prayers
“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any.” — Mark 11:25
A bitter heart can hinder prayers from being answered.
Many people are praying but their hearts are full of anger.
2. Unforgiveness Gives Satan Access
