🌍 Today is Earth Day, a moment to reflect on our relationship with the planet and the values that guide how we protect it. Caring for the Earth is inseparable from caring for each other.

York is known for its green spaces and cycle routes, but also for the river flooding since the Middle Ages, reminding us that living alongside nature always brings both beauty and challenge.

🐞 But there’s another story to the River Ouse. It is also home to the beautiful and rare Tansy beetle. Once found all across Britain, it has declined over time due to habitat loss. The Tansy now survives mainly along a small stretch of the Ouse, making York vital for its survival.
A small but powerful symbol of how important local habitats are, and of the resilience of nature when it is allowed to thrive.

🤝 Quakers have long aimed to live simply, with the belief that people and nature thrive together.

“We do not own the world, and its riches are not ours to dispose of at will. Show a loving consideration for all creatures, and seek to maintain the beauty and variety of the world. Work to ensure that our increasing power over nature is used responsibly, with reverence for life. Rejoice in the splendour of God’s continuing creation.”

York has a long and significant Quaker history. In 1651, George Fox was thrown out of York Minster for preaching against the established church, an event that highlights how radical Quaker ideas were at the time.

Central to Quaker belief is the idea that faith must be lived out through action. This meant engaging in useful work and actively seeking to improve the lives of others.
In York, Quakers played an important role in efforts to improve working and living conditions. Their work included the establishment of Adult Schools, initiatives to improve public health, and involvement in slum clearance.

This practical approach to faith, rooted in social responsibility, shaped the city of York and continues to influence how Quaker values are understood today.
