St Lawrence Parish Church is home to a growing congregation of all ages and many backgrounds, worsh

ipping on a site used for Christian worship for perhaps 1,000 years. There is a broad range of services, though leaning toward the more traditional and more reflective. St Lawrence is one of only two City of York parish churches still singing Evensong every Sunday, at 6pm. There is a great deal of other activity happening at the church, including bellringing, choral singing, the over-60s social club, talks, concerts - and tai chi...

Whether you're a student, a resident parishioner, or from another part of York and looking for a good church home - or wondering if you should be - please do come along to a service or other event one Sunday soon. If you are just visiting York, come and say hello - you would be very welcome.

It was announced this morning that Fr Michael Brydon, who serves as incumbent of St Matthew’s Douglas and as Chaplain to the Bishop of Sodor and Man, will be taking up a new role as incumbent of St Lawrence, with St Nicholas, York in the autumn. Fr Michael’s last day in post here will be 30th September.

Bishop Tricia says

’Since joining the Bishop’s office during the complexities of Covid (having been appointed in 2020 and being licensed online in 2021) Fr Michael has consistently offered calm and faithful service supporting the ministry of the Bishop and the wider life of the Diocese with dedication and grace. The Diocese as well as the people of St Matthew’s and civic organisations such as the Sea Cadets will miss him terribly but wish him ‘Godspeed' and every blessing as he moves into this next chapter of ministry.

On a personal level I am grateful for the friendship, wise counsel and pastoral collegial support which Fr Michael has extended to me, not least as I arrived here and in the unexpected events which came not long after.’

There will be opportunities to give thanks for Fr Michael’s ministry and to wish him well. Meanwhile we ask for your prayers as he and St Matthew’s prepare for this transition.

Today, we are delighted to share the wonderful news that The Revd Dr Michael Brydon has been appointed as our next Parish Priest.

Fr Michael joins us from the Isle of Man, where he currently serves as Chaplain to the Bishop of Sodor and Man and Vicar of St Matthew's, Douglas. He brings with him a wealth of pastoral, teaching and parish experience, together with a deep commitment to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Speaking about his appointment, Fr Michael said:

"The Spirit-filled tradition of St Lawrence's, the enthusiasm of the congregation and the clear desire to be a place where the Kingdom of God is proclaimed means I am both thrilled and humbled to have been appointed."

We look forward to welcoming Fr Michael in the coming weeks as we begin this exciting new chapter in the life of our parish. Details of his Licensing Service will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

As we celebrate this appointment, we also want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported St Lawrence throughout the vacancy. We are deeply grateful to the clergy of the Diocese of York and the Deanery, visiting priests, our churchwardens, PCC, volunteers, and our faithful congregation for their encouragement, prayers and practical support.

Please keep Fr Michael, and our parish, in your prayers as together we prepare for this new season of ministry.
