Incident Update

Assalamu Alaikum,

Following the concerning incident that took place in the early hours of this morning, we are pleased to confirm that activities at York Mosque and Islamic Centre have now resumed as normal.

We recognise that today's events have been unsettling for many members of our community. We would like to reassure everyone that, based on the information available to us and the guidance provided by the police, we do not believe there is any further risk to those attending the mosque. As an additional precaution, there will be an increased police presence and extra patrols in the area over the coming days.

We have been overwhelmed by the many messages of support we have received from across York and beyond. We are especially grateful to our friends and neighbours, local organisations, and faith leaders from across the city who have reached out to express their solidarity. Once again, York has shown that our community stands together with kindness, resilience and unity.

Our activities resumed this afternoon with our Community Kitchen, which has supported thousands of people since it was established. Today's session was hosted with the support of North Yorkshire Police, and we would like to express our sincere thanks for their continued assistance, reassurance and engagement with our community.

Daily prayers will continue as normal, and all of our regular activities will take place as planned.

We remain hopeful that this will prove to be an isolated incident. York has always been a city built on mutual respect, friendship and understanding and we remain confident in the strength of our community to continue supporting one another.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience, understanding and prayers, as well as North Yorkshire Police for their swift response and ongoing support.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the mosque as we continue to serve our community in a peaceful and welcoming environment.

Statement from York Mosque and Islamic Centre

Assalamu Alaikum,

We are aware of the concerns within our community following an incident outside York Mosque and Islamic Centre in the early hours of this morning. We would like to reassure everyone that, Alhamdulillah, no one has been harmed and the situation is being managed with the support of the police.

A member of the mosque noticed suspicious activity and heard what appeared to be a shooting. They immediately contacted the police, who attended the scene promptly. We would like to thank our brave member of the community for their quick thinking and for immediately alerting the police.

We are grateful that no one was injured, and there have been no reports of any members of our congregation, staff, volunteers or students being harmed.

The area remains secured by the police while they continue their enquiries and carry out the necessary investigations. A man has been arrested in connection with this incident, and the police investigation remains ongoing. We would like to thank the police for their swift response and for their continued support in ensuring the safety of our community.

As a precaution, the mosque is currently closed while the police carry out their enquiries. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and will provide an update to the community once we have confirmation that it is safe to reopen. We will inform everyone as soon as the mosque is ready to resume normal activities.

The safety and wellbeing of our worshippers, students, staff, volunteers and the wider community remain our highest priority.

In an age of constant notifications and endless distractions, Sheikh Abdullah will share powerful insights on how to stay focused, strengthen your connection with the Qur'an, and reconnect with what truly matters. This is a unique opportunity to gain practical spiritual guidance that you can apply in your daily life.

This event is open to brothers, sisters, and families. Everyone is welcome to attend.

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

A kind reminder of Eid arrangements for tomorrow.

Eid salah will be at 8:00 am. Please arrive early to help avoid congestion. To ensure a smooth and safe Eid, we will have volunteers managing traffic and parking, please follow their instructions.

Parking on site is reserved for the elderly and disabled. We encourage everyone else to consider walking or using public transport where possible (see the Eid arrangements message for more details). Please allow extra time to park on James Street and walk to the mosque (approximately 10 minutes).

We will be holding Eid party at 9:30 and everyone is welcome to join us.

🌙 *Eid Arrangements Announcement*🌙

Dear brothers and sisters,
*Eid Al-Adha will be on Wednesday 27th May*. We look forward to celebrating Eid together.

🕌 Eid Prayer

Building on the success and cooperation from the community, we will be holding *one Eid prayer only*, which will start at *08:00 AM*. Please ensure you *set off early* so you have enough time to find parking.

🚗*Parking & Traffic Guidance*

We expect around *2,000 attendees (300–350 cars)*, but the mosque has only *65 parking spaces*. As the grass area will be used for prayer, these spaces will be reserved for *elderly and disabled attendees only*.

Disabled attendees will need to *display a valid Blue Badge*.

To help traffic flow around Bull Lane and Hull Road:
• *Arrive early* to allow enough time to find a suitable parking.
• You may *drop off family members* just outside the mosque and then park elsewhere; allow *enough time* to drop off and find parking before the prayer
• Community volunteers will be supporting traffic management — *please follow their instructions*
• A convenient parking option is at the shops on Foss Islands Road (about a 10-minute walk) *maximum stay 2 hours* – please check and follow the parking terms and conditions.
• ⁠You can also park on Melrosegate, Rawdon Avenue, or the nearby side streets (about a 10–15 minute walk).

⚠️ Please park responsibly and be mindful of *driveways and neighbouring properties*.

You can also use public transport to get to the mosque.
