For over 500 years, the Rose Window at York Minster has been a quiet constant, watching over our city, welcoming visitors from every corner of the globe, and bathing the nave in its iconic light.

Crafted in the early 1500s as a symbol of unity, this masterpiece has survived centuries of history, from turbulent wars to the devastating fire of 1984. Today, deterioration from environmental exposure means it requires our care once again.

We are now underway to Rescue the Rose Window, a major conservation effort to preserve and protect this breathtaking landmark for generations to come.

From the expert stained glass conservators of the York Glaziers Trust and our stonemasons to our local community and visitors worldwide, it takes all of us to safeguard the Rose Window’s legacy.

How you can help Rescue the Rose
🌹Donate: Support the specialised restoration work directly
🌹Share: Help tell the story of the window with friends and family
🌹Connect: Visit our website to learn about the craft and history behind the glass

Together, we can ensure the Rose Window continues to inspire for the next 500 years. Find out more here: https://yorkminster.org/support-us/rose-window-project/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic_social

When the British Museum needed a faithful replica of a rare 11th-century sundial for its landmark Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, they turned to the craftspeople of York Minster.

We're proud to reveal that our team of expert craftspeople played a special role in this landmark exhibition, recreating the historic Kirkdale Sundial, which now takes pride of place in the Great Court where it will be seen by thousands of visitors.

The Kirkdale Sundial is a rare survivor from the 11th century and one of the few objects that pre-date the Norman Conquest.

Our team combined centuries-old stonemasonry techniques with the latest innovations in digital technology to craft this extraordinary replica.

The original carving, which can be seen at St Gregory's Minster in North Yorkshire, was 3D-scanned by Luke, our Digital Surveyor, using laser imaging technology. This allowed an exceptionally accurate digital model to be created without risking damaging the historic surface.

The scan was then imported into CAD-CAM software by Alex, our Machine & Workshop Manager, who used York Minster's state-of-the-art CNC stone-cutting equipment to create the initial form of the replica.

The final stage of the project was completed by Qualified Stonemason, Freya, who carefully carved the intricate details by hand using techniques that have been passed down through generations of stonemasons.

We are incredibly proud to have played a part in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition and to showcase the skills of our talented craftspeople to an international audience.

So, if you're heading to London to see the Bayeux Tapestry, don't forget to keep an eye out for this treasure from Yorkshire!
