This week’s dispatch from site: the scaffolding in the south aisle has been removed!

You can now see the repaired ceiling, which will be redecorated and have acoustic panels installed at a later date.

The wall memorials and the large Squire Memorial at the end of the church are boxed in to keep them safe.

The walls have had the old white paint removed - they’ll get a fresh lick of white limewash before we move back.

The Belfrey’s belfry has a (working) bell again!! 🔔

Our bell has been cleaned, rehung and connected to an electric system, so that she will once again be able to ring out across the parish, inviting people to worship or marking celebrations.

The stonework and roof of the bell tower have also been restored and made structurally sound, to protect the bell for decades to come.

Now, you might think this is just a hole in the road being filled with concrete… But it’s actually our brand-new manhole!

This is the result of work in Low Petergate for the last few weeks to create a new sewer connection, so that we can have two accessible bathrooms in our church, near to the front doors. If you ever visited St Michael le Belfrey before the project started you’ll know that this is a big deal!!

Two of our beautiful new carved angels, by .

One holds a shield with the motto “Quis ut Deus?” - “Who is like the Lord?”, the translation of the Hebrew for St Michael, our building’s namesake.

They sit (or fly?) right below the bell tower and above the front door, and will watch over all who pass, enter and go out from this church for decades to come.

1,2,3, done! The process of creating the new doorway from the church building into the adjoining Parish Centre, which will house our Sunday Kids groups, meeting spaces and offices. We’re very excited about this - it makes these two spaces fully accessible to each other, and will no longer require a dash through the Yorkshire rain!

Part of the joy of being in the construction phase is getting to see some of the details of St Michael le Belfrey that aren’t usually accessible!

Thanks to the internal scaffolding, here’s one of the angels that reside above the arches.

He’s holding a pair of overlapping keys, representative of Saint Peter and the keys to heaven that Jesus gave him - possibly a twin reference to our location right next to York Minster AKA “The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York”.

Members of the Impact Board had a tour of the site this week, which included going up to the roof.

As you can see, the old lead has all been removed! The roof is securely covered while the space underneath it is checked. The new roofing will go on in the coming months, ready for many more decades of worship to take place underneath its covering…
