We had a wonderful time at Messy Science on Thursday! It was all about Jesus meeting a widow in the temple. Rich people were giving lots of money, but the widow gave just 2 mites - all she had.
So, throwing coins into bowls made of different materials and measuring the sound in decibels, helped us to remember what the widow did. Adding rocks or coins to things that were nearly full of water, showed us how a small thing can make a big difference - causing the water to overflow. Various materials had water added to them - cous cous, cat litter, tissue, a nappy - to think about how something small can get bigger and do a really important job soaking up water. Lastly sponge boats held the coins that we added, reminding us that we too can hold on to our money, gifts or talents, rather than giving them completely to God (just dropping coins in that go straight to the bottom).
After some actions songs, Michol, Annie and Graeme cooked us a delicious tea of pasta, bean stew, cheese and sweetcorn, followed by cheesecake and squirty cream. Thank you very much!
At the end we thought about how the widow gave everything she had to God. We were challenged to think about how much of our gifts, money and talents we give to God, and asked to consider how He can multiply what we put in His hands.
