This time seems bleak. It seems unforgiving. This Good Friday, we at Sardis and churches in the area would have loved to have gone on our march; to have met with one another in services; to have celebrated Easter as we did last year and, hopefully, will do next year.
For all of us who feel there is no end in sight, remember this. On the first Good Friday, there was no hope. Jesus died and he was buried. Then, on the first Easter Sunday, he rose again and gave hope to countless people throughout the ages. This Good Friday, we feel the situation is terrible and it is - for so many people right now. People are grieving, people are sick, people are alone, people are panicked, and people are putting their lives on the line. To call this Friday a Good Friday seems strange - but just as when there was the first Good Friday so many years ago, this is a Good Friday today. Because there will be light at the end of the tunnel. There will be a time when we can meet together again as friends. For now, we must sacrifice and do our best to fight coronavirus. We cannot do it without one another. Sardis is with you. Sardis prays for you. Sardis promises that we are here for you now and will be in the days and weeks ahead. When the lockdown is over, Sardis Chapel will open its doors and welcome everybody as we always have done. Right now, we cannot open the physical doors of the chapel but we still can open the doors of our hearts.
Bless you all, this Easter. Stay safe, be hopeful, and we will all come through this as we can through any tragedy or any difficulty - together, friends.
