Great to see this!

It's so wonderful to share news of these recent trips to Uganda!

Fifteen people from St. Peters Church Yateley have just visited the Diocese of Nebbi in Uganda (taking 9 suitcases of gifts donated by St Peter’s and the wider Yateley community with them).

Over 11 days, they took part in a wide range of activities. The team visited a local hospital and three primary schools, with plans to establish a link between one of the schools and the church school in Yateley. At a secondary school, they saw the cramped conditions faced by female boarders and are now exploring ways they might help improve the situation.

Reflecting on the visit, Revd Tim said, “it is clear the team have had many highly positive experiences. They have experienced the stunning landscapes of Africa and the sheer joy and faith of the Ugandan Church. People have been challenged about issues of culture and entitlement at home. They have discovered more about themselves and their capacity to adapt to new experiences and been challenged in their faith, with the opportunity to see it through different eyes.”

The Christchurch Deanery also has mission partners in the Kinkiizi Diocese in Uganda. Gill Tyberge, who helps to coordinate the partnership, recently returned from a visit and was accompanied by some unusual travelling companions – Bob the Bear, Stella and Paddington. The bears are part of the two school partnerships she helps to facilitate, giving children in Uganda and the UK an opportunity to learn about each other.

During her journey, Gill visited the diocesan run Nyakatare Health Centre, Bwindi Nursing School, the Batwa Community Development Project, and the Mothers’ Union Bakery and Vocational Training School. She shared worship and fellowship at Kinkiizi Cathedral and attended the mass wedding of 17 couples, part of a programme by the church to encourage marriage.

Gill added, “It’s always a privilege to spend time with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Kinkiizi, to witness their deep faith and trust in God, to walk alongside them and be welcomed into their homes and their hearts with such love and joy.”

IMPORTANT! The Pipsons Lane Lychgate entrance to St Peter's Churchyard will be closed on Friday 4th September for several weeks as the long-awaited restoration work is taking place. Diversion notices will be in place - but please be aware of this!

The last evening - we were invited to be the guests on a YouTube channel involving an Ugandan worship group , AYF Band Uganda. It was great fun, very amusing and brought the sense of unity across every aspect of life that has been at the heart of this trip. The video will be out in a month or so.

Thursday was leaving the Murchison Falls National Park and heading a couple of hundred miles south to Kampala. We dropped in on the local HQ for MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) and had a tour before heading for Lweza Guest House and an overnight stay - and the trip home tomorrow.

A glorious game drive through the park … elephant, cape buffalo (in a mud bath), giraffe (including one taken down by rangers), warthog, tortoise and lots of birds. Saw two lions in a tree about half a mile away but no photos!

This afternoon we went to the Murchison Falls, considered to be the most powerful waterfall in the world where most of the Nile squeezes through a relatively minor rocky gap. It is a truly awesome sight as well as an experience of getting soaking wet. Look at the scale on these photos - the people compared to the river. An amazing experience.

After very fond (and slightly tearful) goodbyes, we embarked on the journey to the Murchison Falls national park, stopping on the way for breakfast in Pakwach. It was then a boat trip on the Nile (2 hours upstream and 40 minutes downstream), seeing dozens of hippos and crocs, including a definite Big Daddy croc, and numerous other animals and birds. An amazing trip with more to come …

Sunday was a busy day with the team going to 4 different churches … Desmond Thuambe preaching in the Cathedral, Michael Duncalfe joining Bishop Pons at a confirmation service and Tim Storey preaching at another local church. Then we all came together at the end of the afternoon, when Tim baptised the baby (also Pons) of Elvis & Dorice, who work with Bishop Pons.

A brilliant evening at Desmond Thuambe ‘s tonight … welcomed and escorted in by a band, the local ladies “leading us (ie doing a dance and inviting us to join in) in a welcome song, with some unrehearsed moves (especially male) and baking our own bread rolls over an open fire.
