A very happy Easter from us all at St Mary's. There are a few 'thank yous' to say too. To Sam and Tracey (and everyone else) for making the church look so beautiful as you can see from these pictures.

We also said thank you and goodbye to Paul Whittaker, our organist and musical director. There were speeches from Olwen Lintern-Smyth representing the Diocese, Peter Rosselli representing the Friends of St Mary's and Ian Roberts on behalf of the St Mary's Choir.

Paul will be greatly missed, but as Paul reminded us in his parting speech, there are lots of good things for St Mary's to look forward to as well. Happy Easter everyone

Yesterday's Palm Sunday service began St Mary's Holy Week and the church is beautifully decorated with visions of the cross in the lead up to Good Friday. This is also a reminder that our Easter Sunday service will be at 9.30 as usual and as well as celebrating Easter we will also be saying another goodbye, this time to our organist, Paul Whittaker. Do come and join us

St Mary's is pleased to have been awarded a bronze award as an Eco Church. We are working towards becoming a carbon neutral organisation in the way we operate. There is still much to do and we will be reviewing this through our Climate Action Plan regularly. If you want to get involved or find out more, come along to the 0930 service on Sunday and speak with Gerard.

A date for your diary: Sunday 28th June - the inaugural Overton Open Garden Day!

Whether you’re a mad keen gardener with the greenest of fingers, or a beginner with a garden you love (or anything in between!) and you’d like to take take part by including your garden in the event please get in touch with Charlotte on 07960 538089 or [email protected]

It’s being held in aid of the Friends of St Mary’s and it’s intended to be a bit of fun where you can visit a selection of gardens in Overton or the nearby surrounding area, having a spot of tea and cake in some, a glass of prosecco in others and having fun and raising money for St Mary’s at the same time.

We’ll give more details on the day itself nearer the time but for now if you’d like to include your garden in the trail let us know!

News from St Mary's …. Mothering Sunday, Lentern Lunch and a farewell to Paul Whittaker

There was a beautiful service today to celebrate Mothering Sunday today. It was led by Harry Edwards who on behalf of everyone St Mary’s wanted to say a big thank you to Jennifer Bellis and Janet Edwards for making these beautiful bouquets in celebration of Mothering Sunday.

In other news, we wanted to let you know that on Wednesday 18th March there will be a Lenten Lunch at St Mary’s starting at 12pm to which everyone is welcome. Please do come along

And lastly having said goodbye to Father Jeremy last week, we will also soon be saying goodbye to Paul Whittaker who has been the main organist at St Mary’s for more years than he may care to admit! He has also been Chairman of the Church Committee and Maelor Mission Area Leader. Please come along to the Easter Sunday service (5th April) to wish him farewell over a cuppa and a slice or two of cake.

Everyone at St Mary's would like to thank Louise from Plas Madoc who has made this beautiful tree tribute to Father Jeremy to take with him to Wolverhampton.

If anyone would like to write a prayer on a tag/leaf for him, it is in the church so please just pop in before Sunday which is Jeremy's last service at St Mary’s.

There will be the usual service at 9.30 on Sunday mooning, but it will be a little shorter than usual to give time for a cuppa and a slice of cake to wish him farewell.

16/02/2026

Father Jeremy will be leaving us after three years to become the Rector of Wolverhampton to serve the city and congregations at the Collegiate Church of St Peter and St John in the Square.

His last service will be on Sunday March 8th. It will be at the usual time of 9.30am but the service will be shortened to allow time for refreshments at the end to bid him farewell. St Mary’s would like to invite anyone who wishes to say goodbye to Father Jeremy to join us.
