šæ Saints, Stories & History ā Who was St Cynog?
St Cynog? Who on earth was St Cynog?
Well, if you've never heard of him, you're certainly not alone!
Cynog is remembered as one of the early Welsh saints, traditionally associated with Breconshire. His name has survived in places including Merthyr Cynog and Defynnog, where churches are still dedicated to him today. There is some debate about which date is his feast day ā 7th, 8th or 9th October.
Like many of the early Welsh saints, very little can be established with certainty about Cynog's life. Medieval traditions tell us about a holy man who lived and preached in Wales, was a bit of a hermit and met a grisly end, but over the centuries stories about the early saints became mixed with legend and local tradition.
What we do know is that his name has endured for well over a thousand years in the Welsh landscape. That is one of the fascinating things about the Welsh saints: even when the details of a person's life have become lost in the mists of time, their names remain on the map ā in villages, churches and place names that we can still visit today.
So next time you see a Welsh place beginning with Llan-, or ending in -cynog, -teilo, -dyfrig or another saint's name, you might just be looking at a little piece of very ancient Welsh Christian history.
